As a music producer, I often encounter a screen that many producers dread: a blank note clip with a piano roll. In this video, I aim to explain how to create harmonious music in this seemingly daunting space. Here are the key points I cover:

  • Starting with a Single Note: I begin by placing a single note on the piano roll, not worrying about scales. The focus is on the relationships between notes.
  • Building Power Chords: I demonstrate how to create a power chord by placing a second note seven semitones above the first, forming a perfect fifth.
  • Exploring Chord Types: I then show how to create minor and major chords by adding a third note. For a minor chord, I place it three semitones above the root, and for a major chord, four semitones above.
  • Chord Stacking and Progressions: I discuss how stacking notes at intervals of three or four semitones can create major seventh chords and other complex harmonies. This involves alternating intervals and understanding the significance of each.
  • Dissonant Chords and Tension-Release Dynamics: I explore creating tension with dissonant chords, which can be resolved into harmonious chords, demonstrating tension and release.
  • Chord Relations and Progressions: I explain how to create interesting chord progressions by moving chords up or down in steps of three, four, or seven semitones.
  • Voice Stacking and Note Grid Utilization: I delve into voice stacking and using a note grid for creating chords. This involves using transpositions and voice spread controls to create complex harmonies.
  • Interval Focus for Chord Creation: I emphasize the importance of intervals in chord creation. By sticking to certain interval patterns, like seven, three, and four semitones, one can create recognizable and harmonious progressions.
  • Chord Inversions and Variations: I demonstrate how changing chord inversions and types (e.g., switching between minor and major sevenths) can vary the progression while maintaining harmony.
  • Mathematical Construction and Pattern Recognition: I highlight the use of mathematical constructs and pattern recognition in music production, particularly in creating chord progressions and harmonies.
  • Creative Experimentation: Finally, I encourage experimentation with intervals and chord types, showing how breaking away from traditional scales can lead to unique and interesting music.

My video aims to demystify the process of creating harmonies and chord progressions, showing that with a basic understanding of note relationships and intervals, anyone can create beautiful music.

I would like to find out more about this. Especially how I create scales in Grid and then use them sensibly. Very exciting topic. Thanks for the video - nice :)
