Hey everyone, welcome back to my video on "Live" by XLN Audio, a new VST plugin. Here's a quick summary of what I covered:

  • Introduction to "Live" by XLN Audio: This new VST plugin is designed to slice audio material, offering both an auto slicer and manual slicing options.
  • Features of the Plugin:Denoise Option: Useful for removing unwanted noise like hums, clicks, and pops.
Creating Beats: Has a 'Randomize' feature for generating different slices and patterns to create unique beats.
Audio Effects and Pattern Variations: You can send slices to different audio effects and add variations to the patterns.
Save and Shortcut Creation: Allows saving and quickly switching between different beats.
Kick Drum Lane: Includes pre-made kick drum sounds like 909, 707, etc., and allows pattern and sound changes.
  • Advanced Editing Options:Easy Mode vs. Edit Lane: While easy mode offers quick slicing, the edit lane offers detailed control with groove lanes, pattern adjustments, nudging, transient shaping, and more.
Multi-Channel Output: The plugin supports multi-channel output, allowing sending to different channels in your DAW.
Additional Effects: Includes tilt EQ, panning options, stereo effects from mono samples, pitch adjustments, and more.
  • Sample Integration:Uploading to Cloud: Samples can be dragged in, trimmed, named, and uploaded to the XLN cloud.
Mobile Integration: The plugin pairs with an iPhone app for on-the-fly recording and sample integration.
Normalization Feature: Suggested as an improvement for better handling of quiet samples.
  • Recording and Library Options:Live Door Recorder Plugin: Allows recording from various sources directly into the plugin.
Predefined Sound Library: Comes with a library of sounds and patterns for quick use.
  • Export Options and Price: The plugin allows exporting beats and samples, priced at around 100 bucks for the introduction and 140 bucks normally.
  • My Thoughts: Overall, I find the plugin efficient and fun, especially the easy mode for creating percussion loops. The cloud aspect might be a concern for some users, especially regarding storage and copyright material.
  • Conclusion: I plan to create more videos using this plugin and exploring its capabilities further.

There's been some controversy about the license for this software. In using the plugin you may be granting XLN a perpetual license to use all your recordings to train their AI systems. (Discussions on KVR and Lines forums.)

I personally don't see a big problem. I usually only record noisy random hits against my heater lol. If they want to train their ai on, fine. If you don't like that, don't buy it. And, its probably worse to post ideas and thoughts on KVR bc. its a public forum and will and probably was used to train gpt4/bard on. :D The only problem is, that you need to upload files you recorded locally. doesn't make sense and breaks the workflow, but i think they will fix this in the next update.

In spite of all the controversy, I decided to give this a try. (I'm not concerned about the IP of my recordings. And I doubt that what they are doing is legal with commercial loops and samples.) Life produces very good results, and it seems to allow a nice balance of control. Welcome robot overlords! I also have their XO (I got it with a Bitwig upgrade). It's a good plugin, but it has a few annoying limitations.
