In today's video, we're diving deep into the world of sound design, specifically focusing on creating ambient textures using Synplant. Here's the process, step-by-step:

  1. Initial Setup: We start by loading up Synplant to get a feel for the default sound and experiment with randomization options. We're searching for a unique sound to work with.
  2. Tweaking Sound: After selecting a sound that's close to what we want, but may have too many overtones or is too "plucky," we move into Synplant's DNA section. Here we manipulate the envelopes to shape the sound's attack and decay, making it smooth and to our liking.
  3. Effects and Tuning: Once the sound is shaped, we ensure it's properly tuned. We add extra layers by applying effects like reverb through a plugin called "Supermassive."
  4. Sampling into PaulStretch: The output from Supermassive is then sampled into PaulStretch, a free software, to create a drone-like ambiance.
  5. Musical Elements: While in PaulStretch, we play around with keys in the scale of D# minor, sticking to the root, fifth, and fourth, essentially focusing on perfect intervals.
  6. Recording and Playback: Everything gets recorded into a buffer and played back. We use a 'probability' function to make sure that not all notes play all the time, creating a dynamic and ever-changing pattern.
  7. Mod Wheel: Throughout this process, we're also utilizing the mod wheel to dynamically change the growing of Synplant's branches, which in turn modifies the sound.
  8. Adding More Layers: We're not stopping at one track. We load up another instance of Synplant for our bass layer, and perhaps another one for additional textures.
  9. Final Touches: At the end, we route everything through one master reverb effect, apply some tape compression, and use some additional plugins like RC20 for vinyl noise and DSAQ3 for harmonic control.
  10. Record and Have Fun: Finally, we record our creation and have some fun playing it back.
