In today's video, I dive into the newly released Synplant 2, which features an innovative machine learning algorithm in its GenoPatch feature. Here's what makes it groundbreaking:

  • GenoPatch Feature: This allows you to drop any sample into the plugin, and the algorithm will generate a 2-oscillator FM patch based on that sample.
  • CPU Performance: While the CPU usage spikes to 84% during the generation process, it drops back down afterward, ensuring it's not too resource-heavy.
  • Interface and Usability: The plugin offers a unique "seed-growing" interface that lets you easily manipulate sounds. It generates random FM patches that you can then "grow" and modify.
  • Technical Aspects: Under the hood, it's essentially a 2-oscillator FM synth with envelopes, filters, and effects.
  • Versatility: Unlike traditional re-synth synthesizers that use sine partials, this uses machine learning to tweak parameters, recreating sounds more effectively.
  • Application in Music Production: I discuss how this technology could change the way we work with synths by making the process faster and more intuitive.
  • Cost: The plugin is priced at $150, which may seem steep, but given its features, it could be a worthwhile investment.
  • Future Potential: I believe this could be the most significant advancement in synthesizers in decades and that it sets a new standard for what machine learning can accomplish in music production.

That feature? Sure. Been clamouring for something like this. Especially if we can automatically classify the sounds for diverse uses. The synth itself? Not my cup of tea. Even at the usual price for a VST (30USD), I probably wouldn’t buy it. I just want a similar feature in other synth engines. Say… Pigments.
