There are multiple retro characters in that army, but the most obscure one has to be the Yeti from SkiFree.

Pyra lost her Smash tights

Pyra was on the Thieves team cuz she wanted another chance to cave in Sephiroth’s skull for what he put her Rex through.

Fifth Page DK's eyes are bugging out like in the intro to Donkey Kong Country.

Squirtle was on Thieves team because he was Sephie's lil bakery buddy, while pretending he was good so maybe it will be a key to change his heart?

and as for pyra and mythra, their sword attack was what gave the sephiroth the chance to outsmart most of the smash fighters. so they'll likely be a key as well.
