I have a lot of opinions on this movie. Overall I enjoyed it, it’s certainly not Ridley Scott’s best historical epic, but I must say for someone as old as he is now it’s very impressive just on a filmmaking level how he still pulls of movies this big. I really love history so in that vein I can’t condone the massive liberties it takes with the real Napoleon, but to be fair people shouldn’t have been surprised by this given Scott has taken huge liberties in his previous films. Although I still like the movie in spite of those liberties I definitely understand the sentiment of people who dislike the film because of the liberties it takes. Although the Napoleonic period is very interesting it’s not the period I’m most interested in personally so I’m not as bothered by the inaccuracies here than I am in movies about events like World War II for example. Putting the history aside to look at it just as a movie, I think it’s very well put together. The battle scenes and the political aspects are all entertaining and the acting is good. I think it’s only major flaw in that arena is just how much it tries to cram into two and a half hours. I think it would have been more satisfying and done Napoleon more justice for this to have been a biographical miniseries like John Adams. In the end, Napoleon definitely has some issues but I personally still enjoyed it even though I understand why others don’t. Also, although I would like for all historical movies and TV shows to be accurate as mentioned earlier, I do still appreciate most (but not all) historical pieces even if they are inaccurate because oftentimes they can still intrigue enough people to learn the real history of what happened and that’s a good thing to me.

My biggest issue with the movie when I first saw it was that it seemed like they didn't know what kind of film they wanted to make. It was all over the place. It had some cool shots and moments, but Napoleon (to me) is a prime example of inconsistency. Maybe it just needs another watch. I'm just hoping Ridley Scott and the writer, David Scarpa, bounce back in Gladiator 2.

Based on folks' comments (including Nat), Napoleon really sounds like it would be hard work to watch (for me - some people love this type of thing and good for them). Think I'll pass, thanks.
