Happy Monday Nat. Hope you had an awesome weekend too. Had fun on your livestreams 😊 You're still determined to watch that zombie movie ha ha. I'm guessing the runner up will be what we will be watching with you. Time to get back to the frontline again. Damn Nat. No words needed today. The brutality of war. I was moved to tears with you.

Baggie Mark

Hi Nat, where did you find 28 Days Later as I cannot see it anywhere on a streaming service?

Jeff K

Was not expecting BoB today, but love to see it. But then... time to buckle up, because Bastogne is a ROUGH one (also makes me appreciate what my grandfather went through; not sure if he was at Bastogne but he definitely fought in the Battle of the Bulge... he died when I was 14 before I really had any interest in WW2 so I never got to ask him about any of it... he also experienced what Easy Company goes through in episode 9, but I won't get into that so as to avoid spoiling Nat on what I think is one of the greatest hours of television ever produced). Edited to add: I forgot about those last couple title cards at the end; my grandfather served under Patton (apparently, he stood guard outside his tent a few times), so he obviously came in with the division that "rescued" the 101st.

Jeff K

Curious about this one as well, unless she found a friend with a DVD.

I am assuming this was a template she put up once she saw that 28 Days Later was going to win the poll, then found out later that she couldn't stream it, so she'll probably update it later today or maybe this week. I think she mentioned (in the stream or maybe discord?) that she'd do the 2nd place film instead, which was Nope.

Natalie, yeah, That nurse even after her death, still helped people. Doc Roe took that cloth that she wore and gave it to help somebody. So in a way she still helped even after she died. Cool, sad way to think about it.

Renee Lemaire was known as the Angle of Bastogne. She came to visit her family for Christmas before the Germans surrounded the city, and so volunteered as a nurse. She was said to bring a sense of peace and inspiration to the wounded, hence the nickname. She was killed when the German bombardment of Bastogne hit the church. She had evacuated 6 wounded men and had run in to help another. There's zero record of her and Eugene Roe ever meeting, but it was a great way to tell her story as well. The other nurse, Anna, was based off of Augusta Chiwy. She was born in the Belgian Congo and moved to Belgium at a young age. Like Renee, she too was visiting her family for Christmas when the Germans surrounded Bastogne. When the German attack came on Christmas Eve, she was in the building next to the church when it got hit. She survived and helped the wounded until the war was over. She died in 2015 at the age of 94. Her story can be seen in the 2015 documentary Searching for Augusta: The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne This is such a hard episode, but it's also beautifully shot. The near absence of a soundtrack and wide shots just really bring home how COLD it was, when all you hear is the wind in the trees and the falling snow before the crack of gunfire brings you back to reality. It's hard to believe this was all shot on a soundstage. This is where it gets rough. Bring a crate of tissues.

Renee and the Congolese Nurse were both real people with amazing stories worth looking up. Though there is no record that they ever met Doc Roe in real life.

This episode really makes you appreciate the role of a medic in combat. It's one thing to be a soldier and carry a gun. But to not carry a gun yet still run into the middle of all that chaos, bullets flying, shells bursting all around, all to try and help save lives and treat wounded limbs...it's just astounding to me. They are truly heroes.

Man, this is a good show to watch early on in the day! Always happy to enjoy some Band of Brothers. :) Watching the intro is always a bit emotional - showing a lot of the characters that have been killed in action, already. This is a ROUGH episode, Natalie! It's one of the good ones, though. Though, that isn't saying much with this show, because it's an amazing series altogether anyway. It's a thing of honor and self presentation. That and if your men see you looking good then their morale will likely be higher. I stopped writing at that point and just continued watching. This is the sort of show that just draws my attention and doesn't let go. I'm still very glad that Natalie's watching this and doing a reaction for each episode. These are tough watches as they're intended to be. If they were anything else it wouldn't feel nearly as genuine. Keep it up Natalie! Totally appreciate all of this. You do an incredible job and I'm grateful for that. :)

After this series would you consider watching The Pacific? It's one of the sister series to Band of Brothers but instead focuses on the Pacific Theatre of WW2 from the perspective of the US marines. It's somewhat less combat heavy than BoB and focuses more on how the war affected them. It's just as captivating though, imo

After this and Hacksaw Ridge, I've come to the conclusion medics rank pretty high on the military badass list.

What’s so crazy is that the majority of this and the next episode are filmed indoors. The forest is a sound studio with foam trees rigged to explode. It’s so impressive. Even 20+ years later and knowing that the whole time, I never see it. It’s never obvious once.

Rosanne Stewart

I love this episode, difficult as it is to watch. It's just so beautifully shot and the medic's perspective is so important and moving. Shane Taylor, who plays Roe, is one of a number of British actors convincingly playing American. Winters, Heffron, Liebgott, Martin, and others are all Brits. You wondered about the flares they shot into the air at night. One side would shoot a flare over the enemy position to light up the area so they could fire on them. Also, the string that Roe was wrapping around his fingers was a makeshift rosary. He'd use it when he prayed because he didn't have his beads. The Battle of the Bulge is just crazy. A thin line of paratroopers encircled Bastogne, preventing the Germans from using the major roads that ran through the town. The paratroopers were freezing and hungry and had very little ammunition but the Germans just could not break the damn line. They were so frustrated by it and, like on D-Day, believed that the Americans must be more numerous than they actually were. The next episode is really good. They're still in the woods, but at least they all have warm coats.

I’ve been a long time watcher and this series finally got me to sign up for Patreon.

And re: Brits playing Yanks, that's not even mentioning guys like McAvoy, Fassbender (ok, so he's Irish, and his accent is... spotty), Andrew Scott (ok, so he's Irish too), and... well, one other current A-lister who pops up down the home stretch. (Really gonna be curious to see if Nat recognizes him since he's just a baby in this.)

JQ

Why even mention episode 9 in this comment for episode 6? Its basically a spoiler given the show.
