Started playing when i was 10 in the 80's and been hooked ever since, for theatre geeks it was a new way to use their talents by role playing their character, most of the rare items in the movie were made up like the staff and the helm but Wizards of the coast are making them game items now so that's cool. Paladins are meant to be like that holier than tho attitude and incorruptible. My 2 fav characters to play in the game are Bard (Elven minstrel) and Wild mage lol. Glad you got to experience this movie =)

Slo, D and D is a video game there is even one called Neverwinter nights you can play they are about to release Baulder's gate 3 I think, and its an online role playing game as well.

I would LOVE to see your reaction to Detective Pikachu

Yes please watch both The Mario Movie and Detective Pikachu

Thanks, Nat. This reaction was a lot of fun. As a long time D& D player (I started playing in 1977), I can say this movie is a (mostly) accurate portrayal of a typical D & D campaign. They took a few liberties with the rules (especially with Doric's Wild Shape ability), but by and large they did a fairly good job. There were a few Easter eggs that you had to be fairly familiar with the rules to spot (for example, Simon had a Bag of Holding (a satchel much bigger on the inside) on his belt, which was why Edgin kept giving him things to hold...).

Nat, I think it could be fun to watch the Mario movie if only for Jack Black as Bowser. Also, it could be fun much like this movie. I honestly think the new Mario movie is to Mario what Honor Among Thieves is to D&D. They're both simple yet fun movies that are both chock full of easter eggs for the fans. But newcomers don't need to know everything in order to enjoy the movie(s).

The Hither-Thither staff *is* too convenient, but it helps to think of it like an actual D&D game (which I know you haven't played, Nat). I like to think that in the game, the players screwed up and destroyed the bridge so the dungeon master decided that walking stick Holga had been carrying around was actually a magic item that would get them across the chasm. Then the players started using it for everything.

I really enjoyed watching this movie in theatres and really loved watching it again here. I feel the fantasy genre in general has gotten caught up in being overly grand or serious, maybe to follow after things like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, and with pages of lore that you MUST know understand why Kingdom A is at war with Kingdom B and War X has been going on for Y generations and so on. What I liked most about this movie was that it, instead, was fun. Plus it was accessible; almost every name they mention is one that exists in the main D&D setting (the locations, the big dragon, Simon's ancestor, etc), but the story doesn't really rely on people already knowing that. It's just a fun bonus namedrop Easter egg that tells the people who do recognize them that the people who made the movie did their homework. Fun Fact: the icy prison at the start of the movie is named Revel's End and exists in the D&D game books because of the movie. However, due to the long production time of the movie (and covid delays) the film came out three years after the release of the game book where the prison is described. For future films, I enjoyed both Detective Pikachu and the new Mario movie, though I did enjoy Detective Pikachu quite a bit more. Although on the other hand, I have a friend who hates Illumination movies and so expected to hate the Mario movie, but he really enjoyed it, so who knows.

i would absolutely love to see you react to Detective Pikachu, its a great movie! Im glad you enjoyed this movie, as an avid dnd player this was amazing, so many references and spells from the game in there, even the other parties in the arena were all references haha i also LOOOVE how much practical effects are in this movie, the Dragonborn especially looked fantastic!

2023-06-23 06:17:30 I freaking love this movie. This was what I wanted the first D&D movie to be. One of the greatest things of this movie is you don't have to be a D&D player to enjoy it. I will say being a player there is a lot of fan service in this film with the spells and lore and things. But the plot is great, the special effects are captivating, and the characters and dialog is wonderful and witty, even without that knowledge and experience. I will say that one thing you may have missed is a mid-credit scene, it's just a tiny one but I highly recommend going back through for the mid-credit scene. Glad you enjoyed this and I hope it fueled that desire to play some D&D, or any table top role playing game, cause they are truely fun times!

Please do Detective Pikachu. It's a good movie if you don't know Pokemon and a great one if you do!
