and the Pain Train rolls on to its next destination.

Darryl Low

Happy Thursday Nat. I think that this episode is the one I've been dying and dreading to watch with you. Of all the moments in this story, I think this one really had an unforgettable impact on me 😢 Damn Nat, that was a hard watch. I said it on Monday, but TLOU world is truly relentless. Thankfully you've got a video tomorrow that will cheer us all up, and Ted Lasso is back on in a few weeks 🤗 Thanks for an unforgettable reaction today Nat 💛

Joe Blankenship

They should change it from the "The Last of Us" to "The Punch of Guts".

Jeff K

"Are you still you inside" is the most heartbreaking part of the episode for me, because I mean... it's an 8-year-old kid who must be absolutely terrified, and confused, and hopeless. Brutal. That's the one part of this episode that's hard for me to rewatch. I mean, the end for Henry and Sam is too, obviously, but Sam having to grapple with the unknown while also being acutely aware of his fate. Ugh.

John

They were going to name it The Crying Game, but that name was already taken.

Baggie Mark

Nat I hope you are enjoying at least a little bit. I know it scares you and breaks your heart 💔, but it's so we'll made, and drags you into the story..

Kate Herzig

It's even more heartbreaking when you realize it was still Sam inside. The fact that he couldn't hear Ellie means it was partly still Sam and that's so devastating.

Anonymous

I'm sad you're not liking the show :(

Jeff K

Also: don’t play the game. You really don’t need to. If you stick out the show, you’ll get most of the same story beats, and not have to relive the trauma. Plus the game is scarier and probably more intense because you’re immersed into it and have to actually fight these things. It’s not worth your sanity, as good as the game is.

Boomcity

Nat: " Perry's so logical.." So you'd say he has a good head on his shoulders?

Richard Maurer

Nat, you should watch Train to Busan if you need a break - do NOT watch TtB, that's a joke for the people who know. I knew this was going to be bad, but I didn't think it would be that bad. I'm starting to wonder if all the "you'll need a box of tissues" spoilers might actually be helping Nat get through this.

Erik Stevenson

Despite the infected and the shootouts, the genre of this show/story is really more of a tragedy than action or horror. Just hard hit after hard hit.

Jeff K

Yep. The action and horror are really just incidental. This is a human drama/tragedy. At least episode 6 is more or less a respite from the massive heartbreak.

Mastervodo

I am feeling bad for voting for TLOU for Nat to watch! Why do we put on makup just to cry it off? For the entertainment of the Nuggets is the ultimate answer. I enjoy these shows and cry my eyes out a lot watching them. But it doesn't damage me in any way emotionally. So, I'm feeling bad that Natalie is taking this with her. Ironic that one of the main reasons I think we love watching Natalie is her empathy, and it's precisely that empathy that is making her so strongly dislike the show. Anyone else just wanna give Nat a hug after watching that?

Jeff K

You did it. You crazy son of a bitch, you did it.

Mastervodo

I am going to predict right now 2 things: That Nat will NOT be playing the video game, and that any other zombie movies/shows of this nature will not be making their way onto any future polls!

Dennis Macko

Poor Nat, i feel you. Please don't quit. Maybe you get out stronger...

Philippe Dessaints

Me having played the game and seeing this episode being the arc with Henry and Sam : "Aw shit, here we go again"

Anonymous

Sorry Nat i have opposite emotions about you right now. On one hand is hard to watch a super empathic person like you suffering but on the other hand it is a precious thing to find someone as authentic as you to share our favourite shows/movies. I talk about myself here but the reason I supported you all this time is because what I apreciate most when I recomend/share something is see that what I recommend causes a huge impact on the people i apreciate. On top of that I really thing this story is the type that hurts a lot when youre living it but in time you look back and apreciate it as a good story that moved yourself to the core. At least that was my experience with the videogame. It hurts... but it hurts so good... Endure and survive my kid.

Jeff K

Me, thinking to myself, "I think the saddest stuff is more or less behind us from the first game" and then remembering there's one more piece of the story that's gonna be rough. Trying not to spoil anything, obviously, but for those familiar with the game it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

Andy Scotschdale

Man, the game had a lot of sad moments, and I remember that, but they felt so much more spread out over time, hours of gameplay in between. Even I feel the show is piling on a bit much, but I suppose that is how a show is going to be paced.

Jeff K

The Onion just posted something today, "What you need to know about The Last of Us" and it's so fitting, one of the items was "Q: Will the show appeal to fans of kids dying? A: Yes."

Dennis Macko

"Oh, she's a cunt!" This sentence made me spit out my drink :-D We are not used to such words from you, young lady.

Summer

nah don’t play the game. I’d recommend slime rancher or stardew valley or power wash simulator 😉

Anonymous

Yeah... surprised she made it this far... I'm honestly impressed

R.BGames37

Hi Nat.. Sam is not Henry's son.. but his younger brother.

Baggie Mark

Hi Nat, I have just finished watching your reaction, I think you may need to stop watching this show as it destroying you. I really think you need to stop at the end of this season if you can make it that far as we don't want you mentally scared... Don't just watch it because of us, if it wreaks you that much. Please think of yourself before you think of us...

JQ

The hopeful optimism you displayed as you kept saying confidently "maybe only Henry" would die is what got me. Thank god Ted Lasso comes out in a month and a half, we're all going to need Ted.

Ian

Happy Thursday nat although reading above I'm fearing this was anything but a happy experience for you 😢🫂 this show has been relentless up to now so I'm expecting the worst so I better get to it 😬 galaxy quest tomorrow and ofc at this point you've watched it and hopefully it bought many a smile to your face

Jeff K

Amen. Ted Lasso will be the perfect elixir to TLOU, as much as I love TLOU.

LJ Mickey

Only four episodes remaining. And HBO renewed it for a second season.

Boomcity

Nat you can do it. Is it a tragic tale with heartbreaking moments, absolutely. But there are beautiful moments of love and levity. Endure and Survive.

Mastervodo

Planning on voting for Ted Lasso when it comes out. Spring should be Nat healing season.

Julia

❤️ Hugs Natalie ❤️ know that you’re not alone in feeling this way!! I’ve sobbed pretty much every episode & it’s been on my mind a lot! I love Joel and Ellie and the only reason I’m sticking it out is I have to know what happens to them :(

Jeff K

Honestly I don't think it should even be a vote. She should just make the executive decision to watch Lasso.

John

The entire series (and game) is emotional. It's more about the personal relationships than the infected. If you decided to stop watching it, I would understand. I think it's a powerful and well written story, but it's not an easy one to watch at times.

Andy

I think one way to look at it is that it’s so great that a tv show exists that can elicit such deep emotions in us. And it’s very sincere and heartfelt, the deaths are not cynically presented just to jerk us around. Which is the hallmark of a great tragedy

Eye

Dang, too bad you don't like the show

Anonymous

Once you're done with this show, you should probably start watching a more light hearted one

jose giron

I really feel bad guys I think she should stop honestly. I don't see her having fun with this show. Some shows are just to much for some plp and I think it's better for her to stop, I don't want nat to cry her eyes out just for us

jose giron

The know I really have to agree with you, I think some shows are just to much for certain plp and she just doesn't seem to ne having fun so I don't want her to be wrecked emotionally just cuz of us

Jeff K

I hope she sticks out this season, because (being familiar with the game) I think the worst is more or less behind us. But I'm very much cool with her not continuing on to season two.

Ryan

It’s cool to stop watching Nat, if it’s getting to you bad no need to keep watching, plenty of good shows to react to in the world.

Philip Davetas

This is my favourite one of yours that you did on this series. Yeah, it's a fucking heartbreaker, but I think that's just a testament to how they make you care about the characters. Even that one opening scene with the mycologist. You only knew her for like 5 minutes and you knew everything you needed to know about her. The woman goes through an entire arc in just the opening of the show. This was no exception. As for the game. I never cared for it. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just not my preferred way to play.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

Exactly..and that is what a well told story does...if every story was just a happy romp then storytelling would be quite boring

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

nah...this is what a good piece of storytelling should do..make you feel every emotion...I mean..otherwise what is the point of watching anything...just watch happy go lucky stuff...things that don't seem invested in real emotion? that would be weird

Anonymous

"This is not entertainment. This is torture." The reactions sure are entertainment to me.

Emilie Mish

I've always loved watching Nat's reactions because she's always as emotional as I am but I literally love the shit out of shows that do this to me. I just honestly don't see the point in a show if it can't emotionally devastate me. Or at the very least it definitely won't leave its mark on me. I feel like the stories worth telling are the ones that hurt the most. And there are certainly outliers where some shows or movies just get gratuitous with tragedy and suffering (i.e. Game of Thrones yes i know i'm the outlier that doesn't worship it) because there's no point to it. This is not one of those stories and I personally am always stoked to get my heart ripped out and crushed every single week with this show. P.S. This is not a critique of people who don't like these kinds of stories I'm just saying how I feel.

Bob Hanflig

I feel bad for Nat. If quitting the show is a healthy choice, she should do so.

Baggie Mark

I agree that it is great storytelling but I'm not sure there is any benefit to Nat carry on, with the show, as it is obviously affecting her really badly. Maybe if she is to carry on she might need to spread them out more to let her recover.

Meg B

I'm so sorry for how saddened this episode left you, Nat. I understand the show is heartbreaking but I find the story to be a masterpiece that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime, even with all its heartbreak. It may be like those really good but really fucked films that you have to see at least once in your life and probably never again. Hope you're feeling better after this brutal emotional suckerpunch! <3 Next episode is a bit better, there's a change of pace and some positive things in it

Jayson Phillips

I honestly was so worried about you watching this episode. Even the people that played the game and knew it was coming was shook. In the game Sam was Ellie's age and not deaf so this made it even worse. But you made me crack up laughing when you went off on Kathleen "kill her fucking cunt!" I was crying from laughing. Remind me to never get on your bad side lol. The little girl gymnast that played the clicker - Great job! she is adorable in real life! I really hope you keep watching but I can understand if it's too much for you.

Paul Gibbons

For all of you making light of the fact that the worst is behind, the DLC stuff is still to come.

Jayson Phillips

OH yeah, applaud the actor 6'6 that played the bloater and wore that prosthetic suit, hope he didn't have to do too many takes

Ben Violette

I actually took a little break from the game at this point in the story lol. I was glad I went back to it though. I did look up some spoilers about something I was worried about happening before continuing. But hey it's not called The Laughs of Us for reasons

LJ Mickey

I think originally there was supposed to be more episodes, but I think they cut some out. IMDB says that there is 9 scheduled episodes.

Dante

Yup, I knew this episode was going to go like this

G. T. Blackwell

You know what would be a great antidote to this show? Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.

Anonymous

Whew! As someone whose beat Part I at least 7 times and subjected myself to this emotional torture…I don’t think you’d survive season 2. Part II is even worse emotional torture 😂

John Cedar

A lot of people want escapism from entertainment, and watching the collapse of civilization and the death of people who don't need to die...losing their humanity because of the circumstances of the world...I can understand why that would be awful to watch right now. This show is testing me in that regard. I held (and still hold) the sentiment you expressed about art. Especially when I was 16-20, I loved this shit. The more fucked up and heart wrenching, the better. I thought that was what art was supposed to do if it was any good: make you feel visceral emotions and even feel things that are unpleasant as long as it's thought provoking. And this show definitely has a lot to say. But if you have a hard time detaching from the endless horror that we are exposed to in the real world, especially if you tend to be empathetic to almost anyone's situation whether you know them at all or not, something like this can become detrimental to your mental wellbeing. I can't put my finger on it; I can't tell whether it's because I'm getting older, if the world is actually getting more fucked up, or if I'm just paying attention to it more often, but I end up making direct parallels in my head to situations and people in real life from tragedy like this, and it can stick with me for longer than I'd like it to. It can get in the way of focusing on other things and being emotionally available. I guess that might be considered toxic empathy. I still really enjoy this show and others like it, but I think I totally understand what Natalie is feeling here, and I don't want her to feel the need to continue it if it's actually unfun for her at this point.

Sam Kimpton

Nat, as much as I love this show, I don't think you should continue to watch it if it upsets you like this. Really. Though the next episode is much less stressful. I've avoided watching your reactions to The Boys for similar reasons, mainly because that show treats violence and death in a way that I don't really like -- which is weird, because I don't mind it in other shows. After watching the last season of The Boys, I decided I was done with that show. So I get you.

Anonymous

After watching you react to this show, I truly regret us recommending this to you =( Not sure if it makes u feel any better, but are all watching with you!

Ben Wheeler

I can assure you Galaxy Quest is going to be a fantastic palate cleanser

Skizane

Or Snowpiercer or I Saw The Devil. Those South Koreans really know how to make feel-good movies with the nicest upbeat endings!

John

I've rarely seen Nat be that over someone. That's about the time you start rooting for the infected.

John

I love a show that can emotionally move me, both good and bad. I can watch TLOU and have my heart ripped out and be crying my eyes out and still say I enjoyed the show. I guess on some level it's cathartic and lets me release some powerful emotions that we might not normally choose to give voice to.

Ariana Mitchell

natalie! the brothers' story wrecked me and my mom so hard we just stared silently at each other after the episode ended. Lamar (Henry) learned ASL from scratch for this role over a weekend, and Keivonn (Sam) was discovered on Twitter after no luck from months of castings. This is his first ever television role and he is actually deaf. I hope they both thrive as actors, they were amazing in this

Ariana Mitchell

I left the fun facts to hopefully help separate real vs the show. I've found it helps since it's so tragic. Understood if you need to quit, mental health first

nataliegold

Haha the second she said that the children didn’t matter, I turned so damn fast on her

Anonymous

just to inform people the game does hit really hard with the sad parts but there is time between each low point, time to process it and move on from each sadness. also the game has a better relationship between Joel and Ellie having more light moments and fun throughout the full experience. it is not great that Natalie has to "Endure and Survive" through this show she obviously hates because content. I truly Believe that the best thing to come out of this adaptation of the last of us story is that since it is so different and popular that it ushers more people into playing the game and doesn't spoil the best part about it. Please go play or watch a playthrough of the game you wont regret it

sammi

In happier news, Ted Lasso Season 3 premieres on March 15th

Daniel Vezina

Hey Nat, no one is forcing you to continue

Nathan Elkin

There are multiple perspectives for this story. The game feels different because at the very least, you are the one fighting to survive, instead of simply watching someone else do so. I think you're truly a beautiful person for getting this upset, but I think it will hurt worse to not know how it ends. The show is beautiful, and it's a story worth telling. Don't hate stories like this, hate a world that lets stories like this exist, and then do your part to be better. That's what stories are for.

Anonymous

It's definitely better to watch the series without playing the game first. If you know generally what's coming it just doesn't have the impact. That's why I could actually watch Ep 3 with some of my gamer friends because every other episode they spend the whole time fangirling over "they said the thing!" or "that's the same font as in the game!" It gets annoying lol.

Jomero

If this show hurts that much, you should just stop watching. People will understand. The ones that don't can just F right off. No youtube algorithm monetization is worth severe emotional distress.

Michael G. Munz

"I am so sad that Henry is gonna get hurt and this kid is gonna be left alone..." Welp, we got good news for ya. Kinda. All joking aside, please do not destroy yourself for us.

Anonymous

Please stop watching if you need to. Your mental health comes first. Was watching this show with my mother (I have played the game, she has not) and she needed to stop after this episode. There’s nothing wrong in stopping a show if it hits you to heavily.

Michael G. Munz

I couldn't even finish Part 2. (Though as a Seattleite, I loved wandering through downtown...)

Michael G. Munz

Seconded. Or Twelved, I suppose, given the number of likes on this comment already...

Walter Lopez

Honestly, Henry getting killed by Kathleen, would have been the good ending. He would've sacrificed himself to give Ellie & Sam some time to escape. It would have been sad but at least one of them lives. That was depressing... On to the next episode.😅

Robert C

Listen, if you're really not enjoying the show, maybe stop or at least take a break? Personally, I'm loving it. I think the production design and the performances are really top notch. But if you're not, it's okay to bow out. That said, in my experience with the game Sam and Henry's death was the most upsetting thing in the entire story. I'm not going to say it gets better because the whole thing is pretty harrowing, but it doesn't really get worse.

Walter Lopez

Thanks for reminding me. I was thinking about what other character also has a tragic fate.

Robert C

I think that Part II might be a brilliant masterpiece but I'm never touching it ever again. I have never wanted a story to be over more than with that game.

Robert C

I feel like the issue for Nat is that while the next episode isn't the trauma bomb that ep 5 was, it's still pretty emotionally harrowing which just stresses her out in a different way.

Anonymous

Man, anybody saying you work yourself up too much is insane. I've played through the game several times, watch each episode when it comes out and then again with your reaction. And it still wrecks me every single time. I personally love stuff that can affect me in that way but totally get if someone doesn't.

Ana Fox

It's tragic, beautiful, but - at times - mostly, painful. I knew I would feel for you watching this reaction. Honestly, The Last of Us is worth the pain in many ways but, sometimes, it definitely hits extremely hard. I understand that.

Joey Johansen

Truly I have the same reaction to the games over the years, and I'm so glade the show is at a similar level.

Anonymous

If you need either an alternative if this is getting too much or a palette cleanser for it, may I recommend Succession. Really funny and the new season comes out soon. Hope you’re feeling better now, love the show and the reactions but it’s a brutal watch!

Keith Jacobsen

Yeah, this was a tough one.

Jeff K

And the creator of the show, Jesse Armstrong, just announced that the fourth season is going to be the final season so it's not TOO big an investment of time.

Baggie Mark

I totally agree that if this is causing so much distress then Nat should stop watching it, or space the episodes out more and do just this season. It's a real shame as I'm loving the show BUT it's hard seeing Nat in so much distress.

Anonymous

Whoever suggested Nat watch TLOU is a cruel bastard 😂

djKENTO

The second in command, slick back hair and beard, that guy played Tommy in the game.

Mike Hell

Wow, sorry this show is causing you so much distress! But your honest reactions are quite powerful. I've watched a handful of other reactors experience this show and you definitely elicit the most emotional response to such a cruel and unkind world that TLOU portrays. Bravo to you for still putting these out. But if it's truly causing you harm, then maybe you should give the show a break, or even drop it entirely. Your mental health is more important than a good reaction. And if the show is giving you this much distress, then the games are... well, yeah, you should probably skip them. They're amazing pieces of art that I believe everyone should experience, but the show can give you that experience, too. Clearly.

djKENTO

The original Joel and Ellie are coming up soon too based on the trailer.

Andy Scotschdale

It sure was one of those, yo wtf, really? I felt her character in my spine for a long time but that was a vile response

Richard Maurer

Not being someone who played the game, I kinda thought (right before the clicker killed her) that was where they were going, that Kathleen shoots Henry then Joel shoots her and rescues the kids. Although from somewhat spoily comments I had already figured Sam wouldn't be around long either. On that note, please stop gamers, we get that you have foreknowledge, but saying things like "I know Henry and Sam's story is a sad one" before the episode airs is definitely a spoiler. And this isn't isn't necessarily aimed at Natalie's comments section, or even patreon comments in general but I'd just wanted to say something before it happens to me again. Saying something like that is definitely a spoiler.

Thoko

Hypothetically, if it was giving her mental health problems, then sure, its not worth it. But I don't think she has said anything that indicates that these shows give her what would be considered mental health problems in the clinical sense. The only ongoing issue she mentioned was that previous scary shows kept her up at night. Not that they (or this show) caused her ongoing depression or anxiety. They just wreck her during the show because a likeable character died. Also, the reason why many other reactors (who I've watched) don't have as strong a reaction is either because they're male reactors or because they've already played the game/s.

Anonymous

Yeah saw that, sad that this will be it but happy to see they are confident enough to know when to wrap it up and go out on a high!

Marcus Carter

I just want to say Natalie, that I really appreciate you torturing yourself for our entertainment, that's not lost on me lol

Anonymous

so I'm guessing this means you're not gonna play the game?, lol

Christopher

To be fair, no one told you to watch the show lol, you were all excited to start a new surprise show, it didn't win a poll or anything lol. I haven't played the game at all so I don't know what happens, but my guess is it's not gonna get any easier.

Jacketb

It's a heartbreaking but incredible story, stick with it!

Anonymous

Nat did decide to watch it herself but heaps of people were telling her to watch it.

Anonymous

No one will blame you if you want to stop watching, Nat. I personally don't enjoy seeing you get emotionally wrecked so just do what's best for you :)

Anonymous

Hows this for a deal, stick through and finish season one and we wont ask you to watch season two (and i looooove where its going)

jamie jones

Must be nice to live such a sheltered life that you think watching a tv show can cause “severe emotional distress”.

Anonymous

You got this Nat 😘

REDR58

I bailed out on The Walking Dead right after the Hershel died in the prison because I simply lost interest. I tried watching Avatar (James Cameron) for the first time along with Natalie's reaction and I just could not finish it. Neither of those instances were for reasons other than I just didn't care to finish. And I have zero interest in TLOU so I never even started that. It's okay to walk away from things. There is so much out there to watch and read and enjoy. Don't spend a single second doing something you dread.

Anonymous

Just watch the native couple.

alejandro valles

@jamie jones, or maybe some people just take in shows differently? tv shows and movies can absolutely emotionally wreck people, it's not a matter of living a sheltered life

Shawn E Mercado

I will say, the pace of the show feels too fast. Characters being introduced and killed off in the same episode like that makes it feel cheap somehow. It works in the game because all of the scenes are hours of gameplay, and because it was more about selling the world as a real and lived in place. But seems like they should have adapted the show story a bit more to let us really spend time with these characters. Instead I think they are just rushing towards the payoff of the first game.

Andres Chavez

different method of storytelling, as you said. hard disagree. what you're describing is....its not how shows are made. wish they were

Logan Kerlee

I'm sorry that this is hitting you so hard Natalie. It's a very heartbreaking show but it's also a great one. If you decide to stop early I won't be upset about it. I don't expect you to! I'm just saying that I'll continue to support ya either way.

Guiuliano

Natalie. I feel for you. The show does an amazing job on the episodes involving Sarah, Henry and Sam. Us gamers, we knew it was coming but when we played the game it destroyed us, specially if you have a kid of your own.

fanofactionflicks

aha! i deduced at 8 mins in watching along with you, that the kid must also be immune, that's why they're looking for him, he's like a superhero as he is immune!
