Great commentary, it was a fun rewatch! I think this movie would've been so much more compelling if Namor didn't have the one-note villain mentality and instead the violence was started because of the accidental death during the breakout. A misunderstanding. How it currently is doesn't make much sense. "Oh no, the rest of the world might discover me. I better destroy them all first!" Does Namor not anticipate heavy casualties of his people who can't even naturally breathe above water?! There's still Avengers hanging around bro, what are you thinking?!? Also, I kinda dislike that this movie basically establishes Black Panther juice to not only give you power but all the skills of an amazing fighter.

Joe Blankenship

It didn't make sense to me that Shuri would become the Black Panther. M'Baku or Okoye would have been much better choices than the rail-thin scientist in deep mourning. M'Baku is already so protective of his own tribe, surely he'd be a good protector for Wakanda. And Okoye is a great fighter with plenty of charisma to carry the mantle for a 3rd movie.

Steve

It seems you're looking at it from a narrative perspective based on what you'd prefer. As it unfolded in the story, Shuri wanted the herb to beat Namor to death out of revenge. As far as motivations go, that's about as human and real as it gets, sadly.

Daniel Vezina

I know right, Nakia or Okoye should have taking herb. Or better yet, do like Namor's people and give some to everyone instead of being selfish.

Daniel Vezina

So, it shouldn't even have been close. They have the same kind of power. He's a fighter, she's a scientist. The narratives perspective is based on information given by the movie.

Daniel Vezina

Queen Ramona killed herself. She was alive and well after the water bombs. She decided to dive and save a girl she knew for a couple of day, instead of saving her own life. Riri knows what happened, yet she keeps her mouth shut.

only descendants of bashenga can whidstand the proces of becoming black panther. Thats why black panther is always a member of the royal family.

Daniel Vezina

That's bullcrap, nice way to keep it from everyone else. The Talokan have the exact same origins has Wakandan, yet they gave the power of the herb to all.

Joe Blankenship

To become the next Black Panther, don't you have to challenge and beat the current Black Panther in hand to hand combat? Shuri didn't even leave the lab in the last movie. I'm just saying. I don't know all the rules though.

Richard Maurer

No, that challenge is for king. I know that in the MCU the king and the panther aren't always the same person, but as to how it's determined who gets to be BP (in the MCU) I can't recall them ever fully explaining it.

Joe Blankenship

Well, the monarchy stuff is my least favorite part of these movies. Such an outdated concept for what is supposed to be an advanced civilization.

Eddie Green

There's a big difference between putting yourself in an implausibly survivable situation to save a life and killing yourself. In the first instance, you do what you need to do to do the right thing, in the hope of saving a life, and you hope to survive even though you know you probably won't. Killing yourself by contrast is a mark of hopelessness.

alejandro valles

Riri didn't keep her mouth shut... she literally said "your mother protected me like i was one of her own" lol. and also Ramonda didn't kill herself. she wouldn't have had to put her own life at risk to save another if Namor didn't throw the water bombs. that was on Namor, not her.

Daniel Vezina

Every first respondent is gonna tell you the same thing, in close setting, if you can't get yourself out don't go in, you're no good to any one dead.

Daniel Vezina

I knew from the moment I post my comment that I would not make friends, but I stand in what I believe. Queen Ramona is entirely responsible for everything bad happening in this movie. From going back on her dead son wishes, to open Wakanda tech and resource to the world, to threatening the UN because she went back on the decision of her dead son. To threatening and refusing to help a Nation that's suffering the exact same fate her Nation was suffering. It's just so hypocritical.

Richard Maurer

Nat, to answer your question about killer whales being in Boston, they are found from the Arctic Circle to Antarctica, in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. They are actually more common in colder waters but can be found in the tropics too.

Richard Maurer

One thing that has bothered me in both Black Panther films. The Heart-shaped Herb is incredibly important to the Wakandans, but they only had that one plot of them? They didn't keep any seeds in a seed bank? Frozen cultures? A insurance colony elsewhere? This makes zero sense in a scientifically advanced culture like Wakanda.

Mastervodo

To be fair, so does ritual hand-to-hand combat on the edge of a waterfall to determine a ruler.

Richard Maurer

I agree the ritual combat thing is odd, but I can see where that being a tradition (granted a ridiculous one) would keep them from changing it. But could it really be a tradition to only have the herb in that one plot? And even if they were that stupidly bound to tradition, you'd think wiser heads would have prevailed and snuck some samples out to put aside. I could definitely see Shuri doing this. It just seems like an unnecessarily dumb plot device to me. I mean I understand why Killmonger did it, but what if an accidental fire had occurred before Killmonger had even arrived? It would be ridiculously short-sighted to only have one plot that could be so easily be destroyed.

Rime Pendragon

Shame about not watching Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. I understand but I actually enjoyed those, even if I was not the target audience.

Richard Maurer

Yes it is sad, and I really think Natalie would enjoy them is she gave them a chance, but she also said in the same live stream that she looked into them and they really didn't appeal to her.

firstly, they weren't anticipating another person burning the herb. As for setting an accidental fire, water surrounds the field where it was grown so that no fire would have happened. The workers there were under strict rules to not let anything happen. Nothing would have happened to that plot because the wakandans know how sacred the herb is. If they did it your way and kept seeds, people like Ulysses Klaue who broke in would have found the seeds and sold them for outsiders to use for their own purposes, having 1 plot stops this. Again, no one has broken into Wakanda, Klaue only broke in because he was given inside help, otherwise, he wouldn't have found it.

Richard Maurer

Sorry, I can't buy any of this. Water surrounding the field would not, and did not, stop it from burning. Besides, burning is only one danger to the herb, disease or even an earthquake could destroy the herb too, among other things. And Klaue only knew about vibranium, of which the Wakandans have massive amounts, and still needed inside help to get to it. A seed bank or even another plot of herbs could be easily protected, and no one outside Wakanda knew about the herb anyway. The point is the dangers of keeping the herb in one small place far outweigh any danger from decentralizing it.

Thomas Richter

The white clothes business is booming in wakanda.

Jim Lent

And here I am just waiting for the Big Crunch of the Marvel and DC cinematic universes.

Daniel McGuinness

I put off watching this reaction because honestly I didn’t really like the movie the first time I watched it 😅 but I’m actually pleasantly surprised that watching it with you made it more fun, Nat! I guess my big thing is that Letitia Wright is actually my least favourite part about this movie 😭 her anti-vax mentality really put a downer on her for me that I can’t really get past. And I do think this movie was kinda poorly edited/paced, but that just seems like the Marvel standard now with the way they’re churning out so much content too fast. SO glad Namor didn’t die tho, it’s fun to have a recurring villains to build on over multiple projects just like it’s fun to see heroes develop over time, I think Ryan Coogler and everyone involved realises they made a huge mistake killing Killmonger in the first Black Panther and they’re not eager to make the same mistake

Amanda Ray

Ugh the T’challa flashbacks at the end always get me!!! I can keep it together at every part except that one 😭😭

Caleb

bruh doesn't like an actor because they dont like using humans as lab monkeys. yikes lol

BrooksHOF TV

the queen was trying to tell shuri about the nephew before she was interrupted. they tried to create a great black panther movie but i do feel like they fell short for what they had. the ending fight was bad and the way they did chadwicks send off didnt hit like it shouldve but the movie was decent for what they had after the tragic unexpected passing. the woman king was the movie of the year over this to me. Loved the reaction like always.
