The big idea of this is that the horror tropes of different cultures have a purpose outside of entertainment, to appease the gods. So the tropes of American horror (the fool, the whore, the final girl, etc. all of the monsters in the vaults are based on American horror media monsters) they are all uniquely American. Even the super blatant sex appeal of the women is an American trope, important to the genre. Japanese horror has a whole different set of tropes and monsters, Like the school girls being killed by a supernatural entity. Other countries have tropes that involve natural disasters, or world-ending giant monsters. It's about successfully executing that cultures horror scenario to appease the old gods. The Mr Ballen reference!! I hope you listen to his podcast too, I need as much ballen content as I can get. Also, they said her blonde hair dye made her dumber, they fed into the dumb blonde stereotype by lacing her dye with chemicals that went through her scalp to make her dumber.

Hella prejudice towards the stoner. Trust, we are smarter than most of you

No IT Chapter 2 ? :(

Anonymous

Hey natalie, please watch First Man with Ryan Gosling:)

Anonymous

Yay! This is one of my favorites! Can’t wait to watch it!!!

Andy Crawley

Haven’t watched this since I saw it in the cinema, but I really enjoyed it then, will be interesting to see how it holds up! Hope you enjoyed it though Nat.

Randee Carreno

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 I'm downloading this right now so that I can watch it later tonight . I've only seen bits and pieces of this movie, so I'm really looking forward to watching the rest of this movie. Looking forward to watching this reaction this evening. Have a great day today! 😊 Stay Golden! 💛

Ian

Happy Friday nat feeling awful so won't be watching today but just wanted to thankyou for the great content this week and one of the best jump scare reactions I have ever seen and I mean that in the nicest way 🙂 hope you have a wonderful weekend and a nice Halloween 🦇 🎃 right I'm off to get some soup so until the next one stay golden 💛

Lemuel Daher

Love that you're reacting to this. I just want to say that you've only seen half of It. They split the book up into two parts, so essentially you're not getting the whole experience. Looking forward to X-Men First Class reaction, btw. You've finally crossed into the awesome X-Men movies!

Joe Blankenship

Guess you won't learn about Michael Myers this year...

JediLounger

I have wanted you to react to this movie for a while, but I wanted you to watch, at minimum, the Evil Dead movies first. While this movie riffs on lots of horror tropes, the vast majority of them are covered in Evil Dead.

Anonymous

I love this movie. It’s such a great deconstruction of the slasher genre.

Anonymous

This makes me happy! Thanks!

ScarlettMi

This will definitely be worth a rewatch for you sometime when you aren't reacting. You missed some stuff sure, but there's also a lot to catch on rewatch.

Calo Grsf

Hi Nat, thanks to give us this new enjoyable and funny reaction 😄, it's always a pleasure to see you in a good shape! (however I must admit I'm sad you didn't watch Halloween this year) I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

Darryl Low

This movie was like The Truman Show meets The Evil Dead 😂 You can always tell a Joss Whedon script a mile off with his fast, quirky put downs. A lot of cool monsters, and buckets of gore, but certainly more silly than scary. Thanks for a fun reaction today Nat, and as always, thanks for all your awesome work this week. I look forward to watching more Ted and Hill House with you next week. Have an amazing weekend Nat 💛

Steve J

Cabin in the Woods is the prequel to Cloverfield. Change my mind... :)

Anonymous

I'm so glad you reacted to this movie. I hadn't seen it since release and it was so fun watching it with you. I loved your predictions about who was going to survive.

Anonymous

Any chance Natmare’s ends with Halloween next Friday?

Eric Bogerd

In the theory of the Unified Whedonverse, this movie represents events some time after 'Buffy/Angel' and 'Dollhouse' and is the real reason that humanity ends up abandoning 'Earth That Was' - perhaps while this division placated the Old Ones, another was working to prepare colonizing arks to take part of humanity and escape against the likelihood that, someday, exactly what happened in this movie would happen. That's why everyone calls it 'Earth-that-Was', even though they no longer know why they do, just thinking that it got used up or something. The Watchers in Buffy, the Division in Cabin, and the Allience/Blue Sun are all parts of an overaching organization that has been doing the dirty work behind the scenes to keep humanity alive for millenia. Just a theory I've heard, but I like it.

Ellis Hugh

I honestly have a real hard time calling this a 'comedy'. For what its worth, the movie can be seen for free on the Peacock streaming platform.

Angelina Sargent

How do I watch along?? Do you know what streaming service it's on?

Darryl Low

I think it depends where you are in the world. Nat was watching it on amazon prime. It's on Netflix in the UK.

Thomas Yanez

I am only eight minutes in, but I am loving how hard she is trying to pigeon-hole everybody and everything she sees.

Robert Reichle

I loved how you are set up to think this is yet another stupid slasher horror film where young people do stupid things and then get killed while having sex. Those movies should never be made again, so I loved that this fooled us into thinking it was one before turning all of that upside down. Thank goodness they didn't do what it started out to be.

Shen V

Hadn't seen the movie in ages (it does kinda rely on a twist after all), so this was great fun. Loved how for several minutes you were convinced the wolfhead would come alive and start eating the girl... and shortly afterwards, actual zombies come out of the ground and you go "Oh those are totally just actors". :D Movie manipulated you as much as the characters - in a good way, I hope!

Jordan Love

It's the prequel to Firefly, why do you think everyone left Earth that Was?

Kevin Mowery

For next year, since you liked Cabin In The Woods, I'd recommend Tuckere & Dale vs. Evil, Ready Or Not, The Final Girls, and Happy Death Day 1& 2.

Brian Jones

Glad you enjoyed this one. It does a good job of playing with all of the typical horror slasher tropes and characters, the slut, the burnout, the jock and such, and then twists the "final girl" ending into something original. Many of the monsters are plays on monsters you've either seen or likely will see in future horror film viewings. Everything from zombie films, to the Hellraiser films, to things more recent (as of 2011) such as The Strangers were loosely represented. It's a fun ride. Great reaction as always. A suggestion going forward.... Why not have a movie of the week be genre specific..... Maybe do a drama one week, comedy the next, action film the next, and horror to finish out the month? Just a thought, but it would keep things mixed up and mean we wouldn't have to wait until October for a horror film every now and again :) ..... Just a thought. Stay golden.

Brian Jones

All good suggestions for a comedy/horror pick. Happy Death Day 1& 2 were both a pleasant surprise when I saw them. Especially since they were Blumhouse films. They usually crank out some pretty run of the mill stuff most of the time.

Joe Blankenship

She's known to surprise us from time to time. Surely she has to be curious about it. It's a classic for a reason.

RationallySassy

The first time I watched this I was super paranoid about the wolf head coming to life too, haha. Awesome reaction Nat! I had a feeling you'd like this one. It's one of my favs despite not having seen a lot of scary movies the first time I saw it. Still one of my favs even though I've seen a lot of scary movies now. Also I second Happy Death Day and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, and Ready or Not.

Nicholas Sulikowski

Glad you loved it. It's on my short list of best meta-horror movies. The ones that really pick apart the genre and deconstruct it in a way to hopefully do something new. Something which I'm not sure was spelled out, but the Ancient Ones are basically representing the audience themselves. They're the ones that need to be placated. They want their classic horror tropes. They want to be satisfied. And if they aren't, they will rise....out of their seats! I think at one point one of the guys in the control room said something about satisfying the customer, in regards to having the girl take her top off. Because there's always nudity in horror movies. For the audience. :p Some other self-aware horror movies I would recommend: -Tucker and Dale vs. Evil -Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (I loved this one so much. Full of cameos from classic horror movie actors. And sit through the whole credits!) and to a less self-aware but still fun extent: -Vicious Fun (serial slasher support group) -Freaky (parody of Freaky Friday with a teenage girl swapping bodies with a serial slasher)

Matthew Periolat

Well. It was fun, but far from the best of the class and it feels like the wrong movie to be ending on. But rather then be a killjoy at the party, I’ll simply say I was entertained and looking forward to what is to come out of the Natmare season. Cannot wait for Hill House next week!

Christopher Boscarino

This film has a lot of references to famous horror films in the zoo creatures, plus the works of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. I love it.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Mr Ballen?! Nice, I recommend his YT channel all the time.

Dooly

It’s the only remotely scary thing she’s watched this year.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I love anything related to cosmic horror, "the ancient ones" haha, and I especially love how the writers worked it into a brilliant satirical comedy. This is still my favorite sentence by Lovecraft: "We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of Infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far."

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

How did Marty survive that attack? It had to be the CBD. Also, Nat: "it must be like that elevator in Harry Potter that can go in different directions." Me, a "Willy Wonka and..." fan: 🤨

Hey Nat, if you ever get tired of reacting to movies in the action/sci-fi/horror genres, and you feel the need to "clean your palette" so to speak, may I humbly suggest a french film called "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain". It’s an artsy film about a young introverted woman struggling to break out of her solitude and embrace the wider world. It's beautifully shot with an awesome soundtrack. It has an 8.3 out of 10 on IMDB, 95% on rotten tomatoes, and a 4.7 out of 5 stars on amazon prime. Trust me, I am a man in his late 40’s who normally hates artsy foreign films, but this film moved me in a way that few others have. It warms the heart and uplifts the soul, and I can’t keep from watching it. I guarantee that if you watch this you will feel better about humanity, and have a desire to visit Paris. Bottom line if you watch this film and you don’t like it, it just means that you lack a soul. It's that simple. Anyway, I love your channel, keep up the good work, you are doing great.

Zack Wallace

Random movie suggestion that I am hoping all the fine people here support. Sicario. An instant classic when it came out that still holds up today.

Daniel Casillas

So no IT Chapter 2 You have to watch it

____

Obligatory now that you’ve seen “The Cabin in the Woods.” If you aren’t a Horror fan, I’d highly recommend watching this video. (And even if you are a fellow Horror fan, it’s still worth watching.) cheers! https://youtu.be/DbKnWsnq2jk

Anonymous

Nat, have you ever seen Casablanca? If not, watching it with you would be a real treat!

Thomas Yanez

Or, just "Amélie", as it was advertised when it made its rounds the first time in these uncultured American venues.

Opti_Frog

Gah! What happened to my long comment about subtext? =(

Joe Blankenship

Yeah. I think a lot of people, like me, slept on this movie for a while. Because if you look at the poster, it looks like such a generic "slasher in the woods" movie. Then I saw it and it was a blast. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Movie recommendations: Stand By Me, My Cousin Vinny, Tommy Boy, Scent of a Woman, The Karate Kid.

Angelina Sargent

Nat!!!! I know I have said this a hundred times to you on various different comments... but you clearly love Joss Whedons writing. You have to do Dollhouse. Marty is one of the staring roles in Dollhouse too. But it's fucking amazing. It's only 2 seasons but after your firefly reactions and this... you will live Dollhouse.

Anonymous

Have to agree — Dollhouse is a crazy-underrated show. (May rewatch myself, even if you don't tackle it.) But if you enjoyed this, I *definitely* have to recommend Tucker and Dale versus Evil. (Hey — Alan Tudyk!)

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

I love this movie, I'm one of the people that suggested it's strongly, and voted for it. I really enjoyed Natalie's reaction! As gory and horrific as this movie genuinely is - i like the fact that she had a smile on her face even in the really creepy parts. My slow internet, and dodgy patreon app make it difficult to read all of the comments. So far i have not found anyone who shares one of my takes on Cabin~. There is a (bland looking) van - a strong, pretty man - a good looking, fit female - a _slightly_ less flamboyantly attractive young woman - and a drug-addled burnout. The guy they called The scholar doesn't fit directly in the Scooby-Doo dramatis personae, and the closest we had to Scooby himself was the werewolf. But I thought the parallels were hard to miss. I also know that they dipped into just about every horror trope, but me and the Scooby homages we're kind of thick on the ground, i thought. And I loved it. I have never enjoyed Scooby-Doo in any form, not even the live action, although it was the best by far of the franchise. But these were each infinitely more likable versions of those characters, so i loved it. I'd like to briefly address fellow patreon patrons. I don't fault Natalie one bit for watching lighter horror films. Am i the only person who heard her say that she's not sleeping well because of some of the movies and shows she's watching? I am reading a lot of whinging on patreon comments that she's not watching the kind of Human-centipede\SawXXIV movies that genuinely threaten a sensitive person's mental health. I don't like to come off as holier than thou, but i am genuinely fond of Natalie, and i want her to be happy. Natmare Season was a fun idea, a generous idea, and a challenge that she set for herself. I enjoyed last year, but actually enjoyed this year more. I may be one of the older members of the patrons club here, but this punk\troll culture of {̶𝙹̶̶𝚊̶̶𝚌̶̶𝚔̶̶𝚊̶̶𝚜̶̶𝚜̶-'funny'-because-damaging} needs to grow up and pass away. And the entitled\demanding tone that has been creeping into patron comments truly baffles me. I proudly pay patreon dues because Natalie is right up with the best parts of the internet. She's amazing. Are there people here who pay money to hate her? To be a troll? Once again - i am old, and my eyes are bent - but i will never understand this nonsense. I apologize for being defensive-by-proxy. And maybe i am misinterpreting some of the comments. I hope so. Thank you, Natalie, for all you do for us. Your videos are the best antidepressants i have access to -- and you wouldn't believe my medicine cabinet. (C8

Jason Dolan

Fun fact, the actor who played MARTY (Fran Kranz) just directed a masterpiece called MASS that's like 94% on Rotten Tomatoes

warcrimes

Could we actually get a scary movie for Halloween?

Danishprince

All in the eyes of the beholder. For many people both IT and A Quiet Place are scary movies. Nattie has expressed multiple times that she hates horror and scary movies and in the end it's up to the Patreons voting in the polls what she ends up watching

Anonymous

If you liked this, I would recommend for next year the movie Tucker and Dale vs Evil. It's a bit of a satire on the slasher hillbilly trope

Anonymous

Not sure if it was said above, but this movie is also available on PEACOCK for streaming if you have it.

Angelina Sargent

I'm gonna stick with the dollhouse suggestion

Lucifer Moon

I know this friends group seems awkwardly close but it is really not me and my friends in college controlled a whole hall of the school where everyone knew not to go to study or hang out unless they wanted to be weirded it because it was where all the Lgbt+ crowd ( my crowd ), the Gamer crowd, the Anime crowd would all hang out together ( the unholy trinity to the normies basically ) and open public sex ( all consensual and was common and was often polyamorous in nature involving all sexual orientations ) among our crowds hanging out there together in that hall, along with open drug use. I won't go into any more than that because I have no desire to be weird or inappropriate but some friends groups really are that close. I deeply apologize if this comment offended anyone, it was not my intent.

Lucifer Moon

I also love the pinhead reference.

Anonymous

I loved "Is Satan calling to complain" laughing so damn hard

Anonymous

You should check out the The Equalizer movies with Denzel Washington

Essero Eson

I loved how much you enjoyed this film. I do want to point out that I don't think that the gang was shaming Marty for bringing pot, but warning him that his bong is too overt, to which he responds by collapsing it into a coffee cup and asking if they're high.

Ben Wheeler

I can't agree with this more. She's said multiple times she doesn't like horror, and I personally prefer seeing her enjoying herself. It's lucky that Cabin in the Wood is more quirky and funny than scary, and that Haunting of Hill House is more family drama than jump scare.

Camaro English

You should react to the Resident Evil series! they aren’t scary they are more fun action zombie movies

Ben Wheeler

May I suggest Crimson Peak for next year? It’s a Victorian ghost story that isn’t as scary as it seems at first and stars a Natalie favorite, Tom Hiddleston

Sean Stuart

i always thought this as the horror genre graduation movie. after you've seen everything watch this to understand all the tropes and at the end catch all the easter eggs

Alan Kobb

There are always some fun facts when Joss Whedon makes a movie. - The opening scene with Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins talking about a betting pool was supposed to fool movie-goers into thinking that they were in the wrong theater. The sudden and loud show of the credits was suppoed to get them back into their seats. - Death by merman was the favorite scene, by-far, for the test audiences. - Heather Langenkamp, who starred in A Nightmare on Elm Street was on the credits (as Heather L. Anderson) doing special effects with her husband. - The final conversation in the last scene between Marty and Dana is an intentional callback to Aliens ("You wer always an asshole, Gorman."). Since this comes soon after Sigorney Weaver is dispatched, is it any wonder?

Robjgood

Whedon was just one of the two writers. He did not "make" this movie. Drew Goddard directed it.

Cripkie

I can see why women love Chris Hemsworth, besides his obvious external beauty. The Australian culture is a pagan, hedonistic one. Mixed with the altruistic aboriginals (murray) .We have no pretence, what you see is what we are. We have no desire to deceive.

Cripkie

Maybe its the Australian culture but, my friends fucked all the time. Its just another drug. Here if a guy or miss doesn't wanna fuck you that means he/she likes you.

Cripkie

What's with American men and adoring tits. My 3rd grade teacher had her tits out. Maybe its my naked culture. Women look much sexier in a fit. Effort is sexy not nature.

Cripkie

Sure satin is the most modern incarnation. Beelzebub back into the years. Go back far enough and its just light verse dark.. good verse evil. the sun will rise again but it will always fall back into darkness.

Cripkie

a giant bird would be my fear. If those smart little psychopaths had size on their side they would reak total terror.

Annie519

I couldn't believe how much I loved this movie when I first saw it, I use to love horror films and for a while now I have been so disappointed and don't even see them anymore, they all just made for teen girls now but this was something so much more! This movie was filmed before Chris became Thor but came out to theaters afterwards and I have always wondered if they would have changed anything after knowing how big of a star he became, even though I loved his character and hated seeing him die I hope not because to me he has one of the most shocking deaths. I can't remember if I missed the eagle trying to go through it or if I just completely forgot but I was so shocked especially after he made that amazing hero speech! I was like you, I thought I was going to be so annoyed with Marty but he grew on me real quick and I loved he was the voice of reason. And I don't know why but after you find out he's alive and he saves Dana he became very attractive to me, I didn't think he was at all before but something changed afterwards! And I found their friendship so sweet and wished we saw even more of that. If you enjoyed this director I would totally recommend watching Bad Times At The El Royale, I will not give anything away, not even say who's in it but it is really good and worth checking out!

Jeff Clark

Oh man, I wish people hadn't told you it was comedy beforehand. Going into it expecting horror is part of what makes watching this great.

Anonymous

You're a QUEEN fan? I love you even more, now.
