I just told my boss I quit my job, and I'm going home. He said, "what movie? And how Cute is she"?

Danishprince

This is gonna be interesting.. I really disliked the first one so I don't really have a desire to watch the sequel but people keep saying good things so here we go!

Randee Carreno

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 I'm downloading this right now to watch tonight. This is going be mainly a first time watch for me. I've only caught bits and pieces of this movie when it's been on tv. Looking forward to watching this movie reaction this evening. Have a great day today! 😊 Stay Golden! 💛

Anonymous

i’m so excited, this is my favourite movie and i am in DIRE need of escapism rn

Darryl Low

After Marvel Mondays return, we have Ford Fridays back, for one night only. Thanks Nat 💛

Anonymous

Can't wait to get off work and do the watch party.

Anonymous

Jeg tror ikke, at du vil kunne lide den her, hvis du ikke kunne lide den første. Blade Runner 2049 er meget en hyldest til den originale film. 😉

JediLounger

I love this film. If you end up enjoying this film, since you have seen Arrival, you should watch Sicario.

Anonymous

This man has yet to make a bad film! HIGHLY recommend the rest of his filmography!

Cole Crouse

If you liked the directing of this film, you should check out Prisoners. It's Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, and Terrence Howard in a suspense drama. Don't look up too much of the plot. Also there were three short films made that kind of explain the events between Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. They're all available on YouTube. Their titles are: "Blackout 2022" "2036: Nexus Dawn" and "2048: Nowhere to Run" it only takes like 30 minutes to watch them all.

Bruce Bromley

I had hated the idea first when I heard they were doing a sequel to my favorite film. I ended up pleasantly surprised when I finally saw it. I have liked what the director has done so far and can't wait to see how he handles "Dune".

Cripkie

Cyberpunk is a love hate relationship for me. Makes great cinema but also reminds me of the dystopia we can sink into if we let mega corps control government.. oh wait that's already happening.

Ian

Happy Friday nat really like blade runner but both times I watched this one I didn't really enjoy it so 3rd time a charm hopefully 😀 just got back from doctors surgery so may save this til tomorrow now 👌 thanks for the week of great reactions Nat and have a wonderful weekend 💛

"Ha! That date just happened!" hahaha

Travis

Have you seen Arrival?

Choof

The replicant he killed at the beginning was none other than Drax himself, Dave Bautista

Salmonero

Yes please! Denis Villeneuve is just a master filmmaker. Unfortunately his style doesn't really fit the mainstream audience, and his movies aren't exactly cash cows.. but for me, especially when paired up with Roger Deakins.. he's one of the best in the business!

Erik Stevenson

Have been looking forward to this reaction since Blade Runner originally won the poll a while back. Love this movie!

Calo Grsf

Thanks Nat, great reaction! Discovering this film with you was a real pleasure! 😄 I loved the little moments of excitement, "joy", some of them were funny haha, without forgetting the sometimes destabilizing/bizarre moments and what would be a reaction from you without a rush of tears at one moment or another? haha (At least you didn't need tissues😆) It's always a pleasure to see you enjoying a movie like this, I love BR's universe because it's interesting to analyze it, there's so much things to discuss about, and I hope one day you'll organize something to discuss in live about thoughts, etc with us 😄 And yes, living in a world like that would suck, fingers crossed we don't end up like that 😅🤞 I'm sad we don't know what the dog becomes haha I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

Darryl Low

I loved watching this movie with you Nat. I knew that you would get drawn into K's journey and how the movie creates a believable futuristic world. I really liked the design of the abandoned Las Vegas, with the beehives and the furturistic hotels. A lot of people find it slow, but I found it compelling, what with the visuals, the music and the sound. It's a really good mystery, brilliantly performed by the whole cast, and the "tweest" certainly gives you a jolt. The music by Benjamin Wallfisch, assisted by Hans Zimmer creates the perfect soundscape, and they did indeed re-use Vangelis' Tears in Rain theme from the original movie for the ending. You're good with your film music Nat. It's one of my passions too. Really enjoyed your reaction for this movie, and it was great to have another Ford Friday film. Thanks Nat and have an awesome weekend 💛

Brandon

It occurred to me while watching that if K sits down to watch movies with Joi in his spare time, it's like a futuristic version of these reactions.

Sour

Wallace reminds me of Musk so much. I'm sure that wasn't unintentional.

Sour

This movie was so surprisingly good. The idea of Bladerunner sequel should have had about a 5% chance of success, but Villeneuve really pulled it off. Also, this was one of the only movies Ford has been in in years that he didn't phone in a perform for.

A.J. Workman

Definitely look into doing more of Denis' films. I think he's one of if not the best director working today. While Arrival and this film are my favorites of his so far, Sicario, Prisoners and Enemy are all fantastic films as well and there's not much drop off in quality at all. You can just track his growth as a filmmaker throughout and see he's just getting better. Even his older two foreign language films, Polytechnique and Incendies are great as well, though are both very brutal and disturbing so they aren't for everyone. Can't wait for Dune in a few months

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

Also you were right. The music at the end was the same that was playing during Roy Batty’s monologue

A Vicarious View

This is such an amazing movie. A piece of cinema art and it stayed true to the noir pacing of the first one. I was sad that it underperformed at the box office. I guess mainstream audiences were hoping for an action blockbuster. I'm glad they didn't turn it into that. For another Amazing atmospheric epic, I highly recommend the Directors Cut of Doctor Sleep. It's 3 hours and completely worth it. If you click on Doctor Sleep in HBO Max, it will bring up the theatrical edition but the Director's Cut is actually in the "Extras" section below the play button. It won't come up if you directly search for it. Not sure why they somewhat hid it like this instead of making it's own title selection. Yeah, it's in plain sight but how many people never bother to glance at the Extras. lol

Loneclaw

I adored Joi and her relationship with Joe, and I always get so upset at her death. ;w;

Darryl Low

Doctor Sleep is amazing. I watched it not knowing anything about it all and it is a real wow of a movie.

Stefan Johannsson

I second Doctor Sleep but need to have seen The Shining first.

Andrew Uhl

The original Blade Runner is one of the two films that I gave as my response to to the question of 'what is my favorite film?" (The other being Platoon) After seeing 2049 I can without question say 2049 is not only a better film that the first one, it leaps ahead of the other film that I held as one of my favorites.

Anonymous

Please watch Sicario and Prisoners

Anonymous

I was so sceptical this movie would be any good, but not only is it a great film in its own right, but it also remains faithful to the original, while still expanding the world in interesting ways. The pacing, the music, the lighting and atmosphere all matches up so well with the first one. While also bringing everything up to date and adding new layers on top. I love how it respects the fandom, there are various popular theories among the fans about Deckard and 2049 nods to them without providing a definitive answer one way or the other, which is just brilliant. So much detail, I still pick up on new details every time I rewatch it.

Anonymous

Her death upsets me, but not as much as seeing the Joi advert later on and the realization that brings about her nature.

Anonymous

So the reason they’re called Bladerunners actually has no explanation in world. As they were adapting the story from the original novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ , there was another sci fi story called Bladerunner. Ridley simply like the name and made the change. Oh and by the way, Deckard is a replicant 😉

Anonymous

Movie suggestion : The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Heath Ledger was principle actor, died before filming could complete, so Jude Law, Johnny Depp & Colin Ferrell jumped in. Amazing visuals & story.

Anonymous

I really liked that they addressed the question of deckard being a replicant without answering it. As if to say, “what difference would it make?” Which is really the core question about the replicants as a whole in this universe, “is there really any difference between them and humans?”. Also love that scene where K meets Stelline and has the authenticity of his memory confirmed. Both actors knock it out of the park here as we see K trying to hold back the frustration before snapping and Stelline’s guilt of having given him this memory and feeling responsible without being able to say anything. There’s a brief moment in Stelline’s reaction where it goes from pity for K to guilt and it’s easily missed before you know the twist later on, but it fun to rewatch this scene and see the truth on her face afterwards.

George Baxter

I remember watching this film and being frustrated by its length; just like the first one! But its supposed to be challenging, its supposed to hold your attention and your supposed to immerse yourself in it. This is a piece of art and I really appreciate that. I prefer 2049 to the original. The vision has greater clarity and the characters feel deeper. But it also helped me to understand the first one better; I struggled to empathise with the original replicants but this film contextualises their struggle more. They are deep thinkers! Not commercial or easily accessible but they give me hope in a search for meaning. love is a stranger after all!

Anonymous

it was always my understanding from the original movie that deckard was a replicant and the two were "designed" to meet each other and procreate. There are parts in the OG that gives it away such as his partner knowing about the unicorn dream (the origami) and there are scenes that show his eyes having that glow. Love Goslings performance in this. Hes showing emotion just enough to make you think he might be the child. shit is briiliant.

Bruce Bromley

One could surmise that both Racheal and Deckard were the next class of replicants, Nexus 7, perhaps. Racheal's classification is never mentioned, I believe. Sapper's in 2049 is a Nexus 8, and K being a Nexus 9.

Ortizmo2000

"Is it SNOWING in Los Angeles???" Yup. In June, no less.

SmokeAndACoffee

They're called "Blade Runners" because it just sounds badass and scifi xD

Matthew Periolat

I went into this with low expectations. I mean, the original is held in very high regard and word of mouth wasn’t overwhelmingly positive. Much to my surprise, I enjoyed this. It, like the original, doesn’t make it easy to get into, but you take out quite a bit when you get in. Classic? Dunno if I’d go THAT far, but enjoyable and I will be getting a copy after renting for tonight’s viewing. I have MANY behind the scenes questions regarding Rachel, Sean Young’s character. She IS credited, but was she actually on set? I’m very curious to hear about that side of the production. And interesting that I, like Nat, was thinking of the final monologue at the end with K lying in the snowfall. “All these moments will be lost… like tears in rain. Time to die.” Nice touch of artistry… and what it means to live and love, to want and to sacrifice. Well… that’s life, no? Still Golden… until next time.

Sour

I humbly request you watch and react to Bo Burnham's "Inside" sometime soon.

Anonymous

Denis Villeneuve is probably my favorite director and you can’t go wrong with any of his movies. Incindies would be a great one. At least if you are a masochist like me who lives for bleak and heartbreaking movies.

Vincent Valentin

ill be skipping this one. really was disappointed with it when i saw it in theaters. felt like it abandoned everything that i loved from the first one.

Anonymous

I second Sour's request and would love you to react to Bo Burnham's "Inside" comedy special on Netflix. It is probably the best piece of filmmaking I have seen in a long time. The tunes are incredibly catchy, the lyrics genius and what he is able to do with a tiny little LA 1 room guest house and some LED's makes me want to start his Cinematography Oscar campaign....Not to mention it is blowing up on YouTube!

Ortizmo2000

Good lord, it's always a pleasure to watch this film. I enjoy it every bit as much as the original. - I commented after your viewing of the original about the term "Blade Runner" which you brought up again. Someone who walks the line between man and machine and is expected to know the difference. Running the "blade". - As you pointed out the music in K's death is similar to Roy's death in the original movie. I'd say it's a match, an homage if you will. - The font used for the explanatory text in key scenes is very difficult to see, and often multicolored. When you were commenting about "Earth Headquarters", the words "Wallace Corporation" appears in deep red above that text. It's EXTREMELY difficult to see. - Kept waiting for you to recognize Dave Bautista in the first five minutes; the first replicant who was retired. He played Drax in the Marvel films. - The actress who played Rachael in the original, Sean Young, is credited for the role again. However they digitally added her face over a new physical actress, ala Mark Hamill in "The Mandalorian". - Edward James Olmos returns to his role as Gaff, the origami cop from the original film. In this film, he presents K with an origami sheep. The Blade Runner franchise is based on the 1968 sci-fi novel by Phillip K. Dick "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep".

David Olden

The music that accompanies Joi is a brief quote from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. And just like K and Joi, Romeo and Juliet had a tragic affair, ending up in the death of both. (I just realized this in this viewing). Man this movie gets deeper with each viewing!

This is day 1 of asking Natalie if she would react to the Shawshank Redemption

You should watch the monster verse movies, so godzilla and kong

Myles Away

This is my favourite movie. I saw it in the theatre 5 times. I love it so much. Superb directing by Denis Villeneuve, brilliant cinematography by Roger Deakins, and one of my favourite scores by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Walfisch. I may have listened to it walking around rainy Vancouver a 100 times. This movie explores the themes of what it is to have soul so well. The first movie started that with the Replicants and the sequel furthers it with the concept of JOI the AI hologram. Humans know that Replicants have feelings. They know Replicants are humans with superpowers essentially. So they belittle them and keep them down through fear because otherwise they will revolt (which we see the beginnings of). Sadly, like so many times before, Replicants then turn around and treat AI holograms as lesser. It's a viscous cycle. What I love about the end, as Joe lays in the snow dying, he holds his hands up to feel the snow. He is a Replicant but he has lived a life with real experiences. He lays there dying but he is feeling real snow on his hand. Deckard's daughter, was born. She is considered more real. She is considered to have a soul but she is trapped in a box having to imagine what snow feels like on her hands. Who truly lived? Who is truly alive? Also the reason there was snow in Los Angeles was because the collapse of the ecosystem means extreme weather changes. Well, actually it was because the director Denis Villeneuve is from Montreal where it snows a lot and he really wanted snow. But the broken ecosystem thing is a good excuse.

Saifu

Enjoyed your reaction. Hope you'll also check out Dune also directed by Denis Villeneuve in October.

Andrew Howard

Really loved this movie, and enjoyed the rewatch. Always leaves me with a bunch to think about.

Bruce Bromley

Young was no where near the set.. She still has a bit of animosity toward a lot of Hollywood, Ridley being one of them. They gave her some cash, the credit and had her sign an NDA. Here's a bit of an interview she did. https://www.indiewire.com/2021/03/sean-young-ridley-scott-slams-blade-runner-2049-cameo-1234625390/

Bruce Bromley

Actually it's Peter's Theme from Prokofiev "Peter and the Wolf". First piece of classical music I ever heard as a child. https://youtu.be/eIi_q4bNZMM

Tadpoleaxe

The spelling of Joi has significance. JOI is an acronym for a type of porn.

damage3245

Anyone else find the line "He's not a dog, bitch!" to be amusingly ironic?

Inkayon

Natalie, quick reaction to Dune trailer? ;> Pretty please!

Brian Jones

Great reaction as always. I know it's outside most of the Sci-Fi and Fantasy stuff you've been watching, but would highly recommend Sicario if you want to see another great example of Villeneuve's work. Also has an amazing cast with Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin. The cinematography in most of Villeneuve's work is phenomenal. He ranks among the top 5 directors working these days.

Really enjoyed watching along with you Nat weird how come I didn't enjoy this movie first two times watching maybe i was drunk or something 😂 anyway no matter I like it very much now that's what matters, it was great to see lennie James AKA Morgan Jones from TWD making an appearance he's great in the fantastic guy richie british movie SNATCH this I'd highly recommend think you would enjoy it immensely 👌, on that note thanks for the fun reaction and enjoy the rest of your weekend 💛

I've only seen this movie once, and I didn't like it much, like, it was not bad, but not really something I liked either. Was gonna watch it again a few months ago, but my dad beat me to it. He had the same opinion as me when we watched it together the first time, and he said his opinon didn't change, so I pushed my rewatch to the future. Not gonna watch the entire movie now either, but maybe watching on YT will get me in the mood for trying again.

damage3245

Why react to the Dune trailer when she could just react to the Dune movie in the future without having been spoiled by the trailer?

Jack Mellor

Easily my favourite movie of the past 5-10 years, seething and overflowing with gorgeous filmmaking, some of Hans Zimmer’s best music, so many incredible moments of camerawork from the great Roger Deakins, I’ll never stop gushing over it. I love the sheer humanity in it too, ironic in a movie where you can’t tell what’s human and what’s fake/a replicant, K having being told to kill Deckard but understanding the human thing, the right thing to do, to save Deckard to get him to his daughter, it’s too beautiful. I’d be interested to see if they take the story anywhere with another film. All in all, great reaction to a fantastic piece of modern science fiction cinema.

Joe Blankenship

This was pretty good. Let’s watch some comedies for a change.

Al Baughman

I tried, fell asleep in the first hour, guess I'll wait for the condensed version on youtube. I'd rather watch a bad movie than a boring one, at least I can laugh at how bad it is.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

We're so living in a simulation lol. I occasionally escape through lucid dreams, but that's a whole other story. 💛

warcrimes

too bad you cant recognize great cinema when it's shown to you. Maybe next life.

Mike LL

Sicario is a great movie, as are most by Villeneuve, but I prefer Prisoners, a stunning movie. Or I would hope Nat could do both!

Brian Jones

That's kind of BS revisionist history.... Just about everyone else involved with the original Blade Runner refutes this, including Harrison Ford in the past who said he was never given any indication through direction or script that he was a replicant. And even Ridley didn't start in with this until years later. I mean it's great that they left it open ended in the sequel, so people can still bat around the theory and all, but by all accounts the original film (at least while in production) had no intention of Deckard being a replicant.

Anonymous

One of my favorite movies, of all time. The cinematography, score, acting, story, the world, everything is just perfection.

Ben Wheeler

The guy he fought at the beginning was Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy

Opti_Frog

A sequel to a flop that also flopped. And both of them deserved to be hits. Proper adult and thougth provoking sci-fi is almost never made on this kind of scale because general audiences are not really interested. Sad but true.

Obsolyeet

I disagree that it flopped. $$$ is only 1 way to rank a movie. As long as people love it, it will live on. Not all movies catch on right away. I've seen the original movie rank #1 on sci-fi polls even outdoing the obvious favorites like Star Wars. You're right though, they are both hits in my book.

Obsolyeet

Without judgement, I would be curious to hear a few examples on this.

Obsolyeet

IDK. It's on tv like every 3rd day so I can't imagine many people having not seen it about 20 times already. Great film, no question though.

Obsolyeet

Or a moment later when Natalie is like "holy shit! That dog held still AF!" haha

Obsolyeet

I wish Hollywood would put out more movies like this, but I get it. It's a business and you need to make a profit. I don't understand how movies like this don't pull in more money. I mean the alternative is another Michael Bay disaster where they write a few loose pages of plot and then just blow shit up for 2 hours. Kills me that people keep throwing dollars at garbage like that. But as I said in a comment above, $$$ is only 1 way to rank a film. I think both Blade Runner movies are incredible. Amazing stories that keep making you 2nd guess yourself, lighting, character development, deep environments and backstory, etc. The pacing isn't a problem either. It builds tension.

Anonymous

"What's an emanator?" A device to make you really sad.

My Toasty Toast

It took me this viewing to realize the replicant that Ryan Gosling killed in the very beginning of the movie is the same actor as Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy

Kris Olo

Curious about a Star Wars 7-9 reaction. It might be a bit early, but it’s close. What’ll all you think?

Anonymous

It has been a while now... over a year since she started with Star Wars, too. Must be time! 😁

serendib

I dunno if it's technically the correct pronunciation or not but they way you typically hear the director's last name spoken is Vil - ah - noove.

Anonymous

I'd rather her watch the clone wars series. We both know its way better.

Anonymous

Just so you know, there is nothing in this movie that verifies that Decker is human

Anonymous

I always thought they were called Bladerunners was because they live on the edge in a sense. They have to distinguish between man and replicant. If they kill a replicant, they're a hero. But if they kill a human, they're a murderer. Thus living on the edge. Also its never been confirmed nor denied Deckard is a replicant or human. He doesn't know, or cares. ;)

zak

Interesting interpretation of baptism as they come out of the water, I always interpreted it as evoloution, like the fish climbing from the sea and becoming human, these 2 replicants crawled from the sea and became human, one sacraficing them self for a greater cause, the other for love.

Trepanation21

The scene in K's apartment when Joi 'syncs' with Mariette in order to be intimate with K is honestly one of my favorite pieces in any movie, ever. There is something so incredibly moving about the implication there, something beautiful and haunting, especially in the context of the movie's story - an exploration of what it means to be human, how we share intimacy or love, how we experience a moment, a memory. And that's not even yet about how *incredibly* beautifully it was shot! Obviously the technical aspects of how Ana de Armas acted her scenes *apart* from Ryan Gosling (so that she never affected his clothing by touching - because she's not real) and the splicing together thereof, and the blending of Mariette and Joi, and so on... Just absolutely stunning visualizations to me. Like the four hands behind his head, embracing him, one real, one pretending... Every time I watch this film, I'm moved by it. Also... Interesting that the human girl is named Mariette, like marionette -an instrument of another's hands- while the artificial girl is essentially the only 'person' in his life that treats him right and real. Mm.

Uncle Phoenix

This felt like it could be a prequel to the matrix trilogy. Next comes the revolution, then the enslaving of the humans.

Anonymous

Lots of artistic design and film noir moments just like the first movie. I do love this soundtrack! The one track that is for sure from the first film is the one you mentioned, the "tears in the rain" theme.

Andrew

This is an interesting take. I've always loved/hated/feared 2049's depiction of the future - like Natalie commented, snow in L.A. and other climate incidents, the haze of smog, a diet based on worms due to mass eco-failure. I can definitely see the connection with the scorched earth and overrun of A.I., though I have always felt that in 2049, one of the main themes was that the A.I. had become more "human" than humans themselves. Humans had become cold and brutal while A.I. was new to this world and not yet been calloused and hardened. I still think this is an awesome theory :)

Andrew

Natalie, I think you would really like the movie Children of Men. It is another realistic near-post apocalyptic film starring Clive Owen (in what I consider his best performance), Michael Caine, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Julianne Moore. The plot revolves around a deteriorating world where all humans have become infertile - no babies have been born in years and years. Humans are facing extinction due to climate and other events. Truly a masterpiece and a film ignored by too many people.

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

Many years ago i found a used paperback of "Blade Runner 2". Forget the autor, it was kind of fun, and the author had the widow of Phillip K Dick's blessing to write it. No relation at all to this film, but i will quote myself until the end of my daze on my satirical title: BLADE RUNNER 2: DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC BOOGALOO?

Wu Sha Ling

it contains several shots that are milestones in cinematography. Alfonso Cuaron is a dedicated director and would easily recommend his other work. I must have seen Gravity about 16 times in theaters

Wu Sha Ling

agreed. my old job was at a arthouse theater and i choose this movie to screen at my farewell party. K's experience, and by extension other replicants, connected with me by their treatment they got from "real" humans. being treated like an "other" in a society is not easily portrayed in a non genre movie. the perpetrators are often explicitly racist, evil and villainous. this movie portrays that behavior in how casual and ingrained the prejudice is in society
