I love Ford Fridays with Nattie G 💛 Life imitating art as George Lucas' dog was called Indiana, and he named the character after him. They did use the map device in Temple of Doom, only once just before the life raft jump. I love how in the flashback they showed the whip causing his scar on his chin. Harrison Ford actually got his by crashing his car, and hitting his chin off the steering wheel! And the bad guy Donovan is played by Julian Glover, who plays your favourite trickster Grand Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones. "That is a really intense spelling bee, man!" 😊 Awesome stuff Nat. As always, thanks for all your fantastic work this week. Hitting your anniversary, and an incredible following on Patreon now. It's been an amazing week. Have a fantastic weekend Nattie G 💛

One of my absolute favorite movies and imo the best in the series

JediLounger

I saw this movie in theaters, I was 8 or 9. Quite the experience on the big screen. Edit: so there was a change in states from the valley to the trains. The train is in Colorado, I rode on it a few years after the movie came out. They had the water tower that River swings on and everything, it was really neat.

Jomero

I'm in agreement with Cliff in that this movie is the best in the entire series. More fun facts: I mentioned before that Steven Spielberg was thinking about directing a James Bond movie until Lucas swayed him with his Indiana Smith idea. So when it came time for this movie, when they were considering who could play Indiana's father, they decided that only James Bond himself could do it! Indiana naming himself after his dog is an inside-joke relating to George Lucas coming up with the character's name after his own malamute dog, also named Indiana. Also, Sean Connery was only 12 years older than Harrison Ford.

Aaron Taft

PLEASE SHOW CLOSE CAPTIONING INSTEAD OF A TIMERS!!!! Look at you Matrix video reaction. I never got lost watching that. Could turn it off and pick it back up at any time. And I was ALWAYS in sync with ya.

Anonymous

Can you spot Grand Maester Pycelle in this?

Randee Carreno

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 This one, and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" are my two favorite Indiana Jones movies. River Phoenix did a great job playing young Indy in the opening sequence. And of course, Sean Connery was fantastic as his dad Henry. I loved that we got to see Marcus and Sallah(both from Raiders)again in this movie. Fun Fact: Julian Glover, who plays Walter Donovan, had a small roll as Imperial General Veers in "The Empire Strikes Back". Last time I checked the poll, "The Dark Knight Trilogy" was ahead. I'm really looking forward to watching those movies. As I've only seen one of those 3. Have a great day today! 😊 Until the next video, Stay Golden! 💛

Anonymous

Looking forward to watching this with you tonight! I'll have my drink and snack at the ready!

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Can't wait to watch this later, but just a quick fun fact, this is not the first movie Harrison Ford and River Phoenix starred in together. There is a little known movie called The Mosquito Coast in which they played father and son (Helen Mirren as the mother), it's also one of the few times you can see Harrison Ford as, well I wouldn't call him a bad guy, but definitely a complex character with some dark aspects. Another Aspie level fun fact, one of the henchmen in the beginning of this movie chasing young Indie is the same actor that plays River Phoenix's older brother Eyeball in Stand By Me (love that movie too). RIP River Phoenix, can't even imagine how great he could have been if he hadn't died so young.

Jomero

Oh! You were asking at the beginning where they had filmed that. I recognized it immediately, but looked it up to be sure: It was filmed in Arches National Park in my home State of Utah! I'd recognize those red rocks anywhere.

Ian

A fine way to end another golden week of content, many thanks Nat have a great weekend and until the next one stay golden 💛

Dan Careaga

I love this film, it is my second favorite behind Raiders. It just feels and looks a little too modern where Raiders really felt like a throwback. I really enjoy the completion of Indy's arc in this. Temple had him obsessed with "Fortune and Glory" only to learn that there are bigger forces at work in the world. Raiders had him leaning in a more altruistic, scholarly direction after the events of Temple. And being confronted, via his relationship with Marion , with past mistakes born of the callous nature he had developed in his, we learn here, estrangement from his father. And Crusade reveals a man who has been running from his familial past by being someone he isn't through the previous films, only to reconcile who he is and with one last beautifully delivered line from Sean Connery that shows him how to "Let it go". It's not something these films are really "about" but I love that it is there.

Calo Grsf

Thank you Nat for this reaction! I really enjoy watching this kind of movie with you, you always give off a happy face 😁 💛 By the way, it's always a pleasure to see Han Solo, James Bond and Gimli together haha Marcus and Sallah are awesome and lovable characters, I love them too ahah The film has several memorable scenes, as the scene we see the Nazis burning books had really marked me when I was a kid, the plane haha or at the end 😱 And just for information, Monotheistic religions have the same god, but a different interpretation, for example, Christians see Jesus as the direct messenger of God, hence the term "son of God" and he was a jew himself, while Jews and Muslims consider him a simple prophet (it's very simplified and schematized haha) I wonder what will come after with excitement 😁 I hope you're fine, be safe, take care and stay golden! 💛

Matthew Shaver

Yes passengers flew on blimps(derigibles. Remember the Hindenburg?

Matthew Shaver

Rolls-Royce is British engineering.

Einherj

Nice reaction. A couple of historical points: - The first three Indiana Jones movies are all set in before WW2: 1935 - 1938. Germany had turned into a great power and the Nazi party was growing fast. When Indiana Jones says he hates Nazis, it's funny to us because it's obvious they are bad, but to people in those times it was not so. - Yes, blimps, more correctly airships or zeppelins, were a thing before WW2. They were massive and filled with highly flammable hydrogen. You might have heard of the Hindenburg disaster which happened in 1937 where the German airship LZ-129 Hindenburg, still the largest flying vehicle ever made, burst into flames over New Jersey. Airships were mostly replaced by airplanes in the early 1940s

Matthew Shaver

Those red caps are called a Fez.

Myles Away

Temple of Doom was actually rated PG but American parents were apparently very disturbed by the content. So Temple of Doom essentially inspired the desire for a new rating and PG-13 was born.

Aaron Taft

Yeah, Jaws is rated PG as well. Also inspired the MPA to come up with PG-13

WackySwacky

One of my favorite film trilogies of all time. If you like physical comedy, I definitely recommend the Evil Dead trilogy. It perfectly combines horror and comedy and is another one of those all time best trilogies that I watch frequently.

0lis

And there it is. My absolute favorite of the Trilogy. Absolutely love the chemistry between Connery and Ford. Connery is just gorgeous and great. I know every line of this movie but I will never get tired of it. Thanks for the fun reaction, Nat! =)

Anonymous

Who doesn’t love some Harrison Ford? You should definitely check out the conjuring btw for your next NATMARES poll. It’s not too jump-scary and the plot is A+

Anonymous

While Raiders is still my favorite Indy movie, this is a close second. Enjoyed the reaction. While there is a 4th movie, the better heir to these movies was the first 2 "The Mummy" movies with Brendan Fraiser. Adventure, some scares, comedy, just all around fun popcorn movies.

Anonymous

Oh, I'd love to see Nat react to the Brendan Fraser Mummy movies!! Well, the first 2, as you said.

Stefan Johannsson

Loved the reaction. RIP Sean Connery. One of his best performances ever and he's not even the lead actor. Great chemistry between him & Ford.

Jayson Phillips

Love watching anything with you! I will even enjoy the next one more watching with you.

Urgh, been over 5 hours and I still can't download this, getting the "too many users have viewed or downloaded this recently" message thingy. So frustrating!!!

acidnova

Just click on the picture and watch the preview. It's not linked to google drive but her youtube page. No downloading necessary

Chris (darkwater)

This is my favourite of the series no question.

Anonymous

My all-time favourite Indy movie... partly because of Sean Connery... and the revelation of Indy's name at the end of the film. But also... because it's Indy haha.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Ok just about to get into this, unapologetically my favorite of the entire franchise. That probably has something to do with the fact that I saw it in the theater but also, seeing a young Indie played by River Phoenix (whose entire catalogue, brief as it is, is great, with my favorites being Explorers, Stand By Me, The Mosquito Coast, My Own Private Idaho, and Sneakers; I know I gotta stop talking about him but he was so talented and as I understand it the father of the Phoenix clan grew up in the small California town next to my hometown, and Joaquin aka Leaf has really taken that legacy to brilliant places). And I liked them bringing back Sallah and Marcus, and the comedic chemistry between Sean Connery as a book worm and Harrison Ford with the "don't call me junior" bit, their whole dynamic reminds me of my dad and me, we didn't get along when I was younger but now we're like best friends lol. Love this movie!

Brian Jones

You have chosen wisely...... Now look no further. This is the end of the Indiana Jones films. Or at least this is where they SHOULD have stopped. :)

Brian Jones

Personally I'm still more partial to Raiders as it kicked it all off and played a bit more serious, but Connery was an absolute gem in this film, and it was the perfect end to a film series that should have just been a trilogy.

Travis Starnes

I love this one. It is WAY more cartoonish than any of the other installments, but only in the best ways.

This_Jedi_crafts

Another great way to spend my Friday afternoon/ evening - so much fun and totally takes the stress of the day, away! Thanks for another fun reaction!!

Jon Hoover

This is the first time I've ever noticed how strong Sean Connery's hand looks when he stops the German's hand. Connery is a former Mr. Universe. They can't hide all of his muscles. He also did The Rock way after this movie, where he plays a badass action hero.

Jon Hoover

Funnily, Connery was only a few years older than Ford. They really aged him up for this film.

Andrew T

"A very cinematic explosion it was." – Yoda...or Natalie

Matt O'Keefe

He's hard to spot with aging 20 or so years from this, having a beard, and his voice sounds different in this compared to Game of Thrones.

Ortizmo2000

"Oh, we're gonna have a James bond moment!" NAT, I am so proud of you!!! LOL

Ortizmo2000

"Ew...are his and his dad Eskimo??" WTF does "Eskimo" mean????

Matthew Periolat

This is my favorite of the Indy movies, with all due respect to Raiders. I blame Sir Connery for making this such a gem, making it a cut above the other Raiders movies. And after all, who else could be Indy’s father but James Bond? I just can’t find anything with the Nazis funny though, the stuff in Berlin gives me such cringe. It’s not offensive, but... yeah, even Spielberg has said he can’t do stuff like that anymore after Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, it’s not who he is or where he is as a film maker anymore. Small stuff though in the scheme of things. If we want more Indy, Young Indy Chronicles is fun. Sadly, no other movies have been made since Last Crusade. No. Other. Movies. 😁 Only slightly kidding, I personally don’t find Crystal Skull THAT awful, but... yeah, Indiana... let it go. Still Golden until next time. On darkness’s swift wings...

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I don't think the students in his office were there because they were obsessed with him, they weren't swooning like the girls (and some of the guys) in his class, they looked more irate. What I took away from that and Indie jumping out the window was that he's not a very good Prof, it's just a day job, pays the bills, gives him some respectability, but otherwise kind of a nuisance to him. And the way he was handling the tablet wasn't very cautious but then again some early archaeologists did have a reputation for being cavalier and damaging artifacts almost as often as they found them. I did love that Nat pointed out the Bond allusion, I also thought it was kinda funny Indie chose to do a bad Scottish accent of all things.

Anonymous

According to the TV show Young Adventures of Indiana Jones, he is able read, write and speak 27 languages due to him going on a world tour when he was very young while his father taught at various international universities. It’s a fun show and quick to get through if you ever want more Indy content. It also helped him in his film travels from his time fighting in WWI where he fought most of the war and went on to the rank of Captain. He had to learn a lot of skills from that time but he never learned how to fly that well. Lol.

Joe Blankenship

That little blurry part is a thing that happens sometimes when movies are transferred from film. To fix an unsteady camera shot, the frames get blurred together for a bit. I had to Google it because I've noticed it in other movies and it is pretty odd.

Ortizmo2000

alright, I'll just say this.....The first 3 Indy movies are gold. "Crystal Skull" is no bad I'm gonna skip that reaction until you get to the "Dark Knight" trilogy. THAT is how AWFUL it is. El puko!

Michael G. Munz

That second blade in the "penitent man" test has always struck me as unfair. It should've been "Only the penitent acrobat will pass" or something.

Mike H

humming/singing 'Cats in the Cradle' made me cry. I felt that very deeply, having not connected with my son until he was 15 and my wife was having an affair that ended our marriage. That song had never rung truer than when I realized how much time I lost being buried in my work. Here's a great fan film for you to watch Natalie: https://youtu.be/SVSox0qApO4 Lots of researchable Easter eggs here!!

serendib

"What kind of hats are those?" That would be a fez. Seldom seen these days outside of Shriner events. And no not Italian ... Turkish.

David Crabtree

In the end, Elsa just couldn't "let it go!"

Cripkie

There are moments in this film that always choked me up rewatching. But I have father issues. 34 years old and I still crave the approval of my father.

PaulChristopher

You should definitely try Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Anonymous

I loved watching Young Indy! I need to find a way to watch it again.

Anonymous

I think she said in her intro for the first Indy film that she won't be revisiting Crystal Skull... she didn't like it that much.

Robert Avila

This was so much fun. As much as I love Raiders, this is my favorite Indy movie. Loved seeing Marcus and Sallah again, and the father/son chemistry between Ford and Connery was superb. I think its great to see your different reactions, but my favorites are when it's a fun movie like this you can really get into and enjoy. Looking forward to whatever comes next.

serendib

Yes blimps (or since they were in Germany, zeppelins) were an early form of passenger air travel.

_Crimson_Fkr_

And there has been no other Idiana Jones movies made since, btw that red hat is called a fez.

Darryl Low

Watching Nat is an education. I had to google that too, and then I wished I hadn't! ha ha

Alan Kobb

Really the best of the Indiana Jones movies, and so much fun watching with you! Quite a few countries, including the US and Germany flew blimps into the 1930s. Before jet engines came to commercial aviation after WWII, they were really the only way to travel long distances through the air because large airplanes needed too much fuel to go long distances with prop engines. In the 1930s, the US had a monopoly on helium, and refused to sell non-flammable helium to Germany, so they ended up filling their Zeppelin blimps with hydrogen, leading to the explosion of the Hindenberg over New Jersey. These days, blimps are still useful for sky views of sporting events since they can stay aloft for a long time without using much fuel and without making sound, but not much else. Still, it looks like a nice way to travel if you don't need to go very fast and don't hit bad weather.

Anonymous

Its a great adventure film, maybe the best one of the series. And physical comedy is universal so everyone can find a moment to laugh and enjoy. Sean Connery as the old man was the best character to play along side Indy. And the whole sub plot of the father son relationship is wonderful. It just goes to show that all sons want their fathers love and approval.

Connor Crout

Every. Single. reaction. The quality continues to get better and better and better! I had no idea i liked this type of content this much!

Ken W

With how much you've loved these movies I think you would really enjoy The Mummy (from 1999 with Brendan Fraser) and/or The Mask of Zorro (from 1998). Another one that lives in the same area for me at least is The Count of Monte Cristo (from 2002). All very good if you haven't seen them before.

Nicholas Sulikowski

Some fun trivia: -Walter Donovan was played by actor Julian Glover. He had previously played General Veers in The Empire Strikes Back. He's the one officer that tells Vader that the Rebels have put up a shield and are alerted to their presence. "[Ozzel] thought surprise was wiser." And he's the same guy that leads the AT-AT attack on the ground, and gives the order to fire on the Rebels' shield generator. He also plays the villain Scaroth/Count Scarlioni in an old Doctor Who serial entitled City of Death, written by Douglas Adams. (Writer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy franchise) -River Phoenix played the young 13-ish Indiana Jones in the prologue. (He's the sibling of Joaquin Phoenix, who recently played Arthur Fleck/Joker in the film Joker.) Afterwards, a TV show called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was created, but River sadly died of a drug overdose before then. For the show they instead cast Corey Carrier to play the 10-ish year old Indy and Sean Patrick Flanery to play the 16-ish year old Indy. Said series was later re-edited into 22 TV movies on VHS and DVD called The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. The series was largely edutainment, focusing less on the supernatural, and more about introducing actual historical figures that Indy would meet and learn from. It's a pretty decent show, although it is more learning based than it is fantasy supernatural adventure based. (And his father is a recurring character, though not played by Sean Connery.) Indy however still does go through intense things like World War I, and even meets people like Lawrence of Arabia and Pancho Villa. (Crystal Skull mentions the latter.) Taking it even further, the then VHS releases of the first three Indiana Jones films were labelled Chapters 23-25, thus making the Young Indy show a kind of prequel. (And George Lucas loves his prequels.) There was also a journal for Indiana Jones released in 2008 to promote the then newest film. And it sure enough spent a lot of time on his Young adventures, before chronologically dealing with the films, ending with Crystal Skull as Chapter 26. (It also chronicled the events of the video game Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, which had done aliens before Crystal Skull did.) -When the one butler says, "It you are a Scottish lord, then I AM MICKEY MOUSE!", that wasn't the original line. Originally, the script said, "THEN I AM JESSE OWENS!" Jesse Owens was a black athlete competing in the 1936 Olympics. He set three world records and won four gold medals. And although (allegedly, it's not confirmed) Hitler shook his hand during said Olympics, it was certainly something lingering in the minds of racist Nazis that this black man had done so well, making a mockery of Aryan belief. Thus making the one butler's comment topical and fitting. The studio however didn't think the average audience would know who Jesse Owens was sadly, and so they went with Mickey Mouse instead.

Robert Reichle

Great British comedian Alexei Sayle as the sultan that wanted the car as his price for crossing his land.

Tiger Chu

I always thought there was something odd about the way that butler said Mickey Mouse. Julian Glover also played Grand Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones which Nat is currently watching.

Ulrich Unterbrunner

This is how you say good bye in Austria. Speaking from over 40 years of experience: No. We are mostly rude as f*** - especially to non-tourist outside strangers. Also I love that signpost in the middle of nowhere near Salzburg pointing at Venice (even in English) and Berlin, while in the background is North American flora and geology. The third arrow said "German Border" apparently. Also the dry grass. Austria did not exist anymore in this year after March 13 (Anschluss). So it would have been early spring or late winter in the northern alpine region, where temperature rarely exceeds 10°C and the trees don't carry any leafs at that time. Petra is a wonder of the world, but only in Civilization VI - giving tile boni to all desert tiles within the cities radius. It is however not one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, as they were all built 100s of years before the common era. I also enjoy Sean Connery very much, because he brings "shs" in every shentensh. A quite perfect and fitting end to the Indiana Jones film series. Glad they didn't make another one afterwards.

Aaron Chandler

The map thing was done in Temple. When they flew from Shanghai to India.

George Baxter

I had no idea how cartoony this film until Natalie reacted to it... still enjoyable. Watching this as a kid I thought it was so clever to explain Indy's origin in the first 10 minutes. Now it seems to convenient and unsubtle. Same with the plane chase, the sign pointing to both Berlin and Venice!? Insane! Its good simple fun storytelling

George Baxter

Also has anyone told Natalie that Salah is the same actor who played Gimlee in Lord of the Rings?? Or that Donovan, the main villain of Crusade, is also Grand Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones!?! Its all connected...

Misty Crom

I noticed as I was grabbing a snack that Indy's hat is due to go up for auction. It's expected to go for up to $250,000.

Anonymous

The grave robber leader at the beginning of the movie was supposed to be Abner Ravenwood, Marion’s father. Obviously the two of them would meet up again.

Anonymous

And during the scene where we first meet Walter Donovan, when he enters the room you can hear a piano playing in the background. The piano was playing The Imperial March aka Darth Vader’s theme! It’s an Easter Egg but also a subtle nod to the fact that Donovan is a bad guy.

Misty Crom

The hats are Fezzes (Fez singular); traditional hats of Turkey. Hatay province is in Turkey, and so presumably is also where Alexandretta is supposed to be. Also, the car the Sultan of Hatay took possession of from the Nazis was a Rolls Royce which is... was... decidedly NOT German.

@1h15m - "This seems like something to speak about in therapy" LOL I can only imagine how effed up a therapist would find these two. They didn't really have therapy then like we do now

Ehrys V.

Not only was blimp travel a thing back then, but it's being considered today as a cost and energy efficient, environmentally-friendly method of travel for city hopping, since it can travel further than planes without having as harsh of an effect on the environment.

Anakin Starkiller

I can't wait to see these on 4K soon . I'm excited 😀

Anakin Starkiller

The Temple of Doom Indy was very familiar with with just about everything on his mission. He even was familiar on how to make the stones work. I also love how Indy said that we don't rely on maps when he's holding a map in the movie.

Anakin Starkiller

The Armies of Darkness that's not Indy's arena that's Ash 🤣🤣

Anakin Starkiller

I believe that Blimp was modeled after the Hidenburg that crashed in 1937.

Anakin Starkiller

I think Harrison wants 3 movies of Younger Indy and 3 films of a more experienced older Indy. The 5th film has a release date and I imagine the 6th will come a few years after . Just a guess but Harrison does want to finish off this new trilogy.

Kenny Teeology

Zeppelin or Air-Ship travel was a thing back in those days. The Art Deco spire of the Empire State Building was originally designed to serve as a mooring mast for Zeppelins and other airships, although it was found that high winds made this impossible and the plan was abandoned. The Hindenburg disaster in 1937 led to the end of Air-Ship travel. Some alternate timeline sci-fi TV shows and movies still feature air-ships as if the Hindenburg fire hadn't happened.

R S

What's with this 'Cats' song? I don't get it.

LightsCameraJake

Don't know if you will see this, I know this is a few months old BUT if you do, Sallah, portrayed by John Rhys-Davies, is the same actor who plays Gimli in Lord of the Rings!
