Hey friends!

Here is my reaction to the movie: BLADE RUNNER!! I'm watching The Final Cut per most of your suggestions :) I'm also watching the version on Amazon Prime for those who are curious.

You may notice that I'm trying something new in this video and adding a timer so that I can pause the movie for more detailed commentary and not talk over big plot points. The timer may not be perfectly synced up (potentially off by a few tenths of a second) so please bear with me as I try out new things.

As always, I can't wait to hear your thoughts in the comments below and until the next one, ✨stay golden!✨

Fantastic. Been looking forward to this one

For a moment by the title i thought she watched the movie Blade 😅, that would be awesome if it was Tho

I look forward to seeing this one💙

Downloading this to watch tonight. I haven't seen this movie in awhile. I've only seen the regular theatrical version. So, this will be a first time watching The Final Cut of this movie. Looking forward to watching this movie reaction this evening. Have a great day & weekend! 😊 Until the next video, Stay Golden! 💛

Ian

Caught me a little of guard there in a good way just got a curry and a beer so all set 👌 looking forward to this a lot 💛

Andy Jordan

Super excited for this one! Lots of Ridley Scott goodness on the channel so far (four so far, by my count). If I might suggest your next Scott film (whenever you feel ready), I'd recommend American Gangster. Probably his best post-Gladiator film (or Black Hawk Down), and Chiwetel Ejiofor is in it. Thanks, as always, for all the smiles, Nat. Have an awesome weekend. Cheers!

The unicorn -- it is likely implanted memory of Deckard (Harrison Ford) and Gaff knows about it, like how Deckard knows about Rachael's memory, at least that seems Ridley Scott's intention but he kept it a secret during the production so it is not entirely certain.

I have to say pausing a video that I need to stay synced with sounds like it’s going to be a bit tedious. And for me the timer won’t help much because I’m watching my dvd version. I will stay open minded, but my first thought is don’t do that. Subtitles are a much better way to not miss things while talking, in a watch along situation, but let’s see. EDIT: Yeah, this isn’t tedious at all, totally works fine and isn’t hard to keep in sync. I’ve done a complete 180 on this, Im fine with the pausing. The blurred video makes it super easy to sync even if the timer is 5 seconds off for me on dvd. That being said, I would still have to vote “no pausing” but it works either way.

Armchair Wizard

I really like what you did with the timer Nat, and I really like your pausing to discuss things. I think its a really good idea. I have no problem pausing along with you whenever you wanna discuss something.

Troy B.

I haven't watched it yet, but I'm hoping you give us a heads up when you're about to pause, as I think that'd make it easier for everyone. Let's see! *dives in* Edit/Update: Okay, that wasn't too bad, though I do think maybe a "pausing in 3, 2, 1" would be useful, and/or unblurring the moment so we're definitely on the same frame when we come out of pause.

JediLounger

I first saw this movie when I was 15, a friends dad rented it for us. I had no idea what was happening, but I loved it. Now that you have watched BR, put BR 2049 on your list to watch soon, the movies hit hard when watched together. Another interesting tidbit about BR is that these movies are in the same timeline as Alien.

Bellamy

Timer is a good addition. Unblurred picture in picture upload on a site like Pixeldrain would work too, with no danger of copyright strikes. You could just link it in the description like the Drive download.

Valar Dohaeris

Yeah, I'm starting now but I really hating the idea of full reaction videos with pauses... For YouTube it's perfect, but here... I don't see it.

MotoDork

Fucking fantastic

Christopher Boscarino

Nat: "I am looking forward to a fun, action packed movie." Me: "Oh...". Still one of my favorites for the Noir feel, soundtrack as well as "the scene in the rain." you know the one.

Tay Schumaker

I like the timer idea Natalie. It's cool of you to adapt to criticisms and try out new things. Always trying to get better, I admire your work ethic.

Anonymous

The pausing is COMPLETELY unnecessary. Please do not make it a thing. It's an incredible pain in the Ass. I've NEVER had a problem with you ''talking over'' any part of a reaction. I will have to stop pledging if this goes on, and I really don't want to since you are one of my favourite reactors out there.

Anonymous

in 'that scene', she "can't rely" on her emotions. That's why he forces her to say the things, but for sure it does not look good, especailly in the 2020s.

navghtivs

And about the creepy replicant eyes, you can see Harrison Ford having those eyes for a second in the movie. (these clues weren't in the theatrical cut)

Calo Grsf

Thank you Nat for this reaction! It's always nice to see you enjoying a movie like this 😄 Your way of thinking during the movie and your reflexions impressed me haha, and I must admit that sometimes your reflexions completely confuse me (especially with Harrison Ford, you know what I mean 😅 haha ), and Ridley Scott made really good movies, and in addition this film has been included in the 100 greatest American films of all time, for the themes it deals with (religion, anticipation, AI, what it is to be human...) and for the direction, the atmosphere... But I'm not a fan of your new pausing thing, I think it breaks the rhythm of the film a bit and the previous way was more natural and more "fluid" (the reaction word takes its true meaning like this, don't you think? haha) Otherwise great reaction! 😄 I hope you and your family are well, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

Thomas Malley

The time code for your experiment definitely needs to stay. That was immensely helpful. Also for the ability to pause it myself if I need to stop and make a salad.

A. F. Idiot

For what it's worth, I very much appreciate the occasional sync pauses -- whether for commentary, or just to make sure we're all more or less at the same point in the film. It can be difficult switching between viewing windows and trying to get everything running more-or-less synchronized, especially when you have other stuff going on which means you need to occasionally step away from the computer.

Troy B.

You mentioned maybe pausing as much as "ten times" in a movie, which would be like every 15 minutes for a 2.5 hour movie. I feel like that'd be too often. And I don't think you talk over the plot THAT often in a movie or show (I can only recall it being maaaybe three or four times on average, though when it happens it can be glaring, in a sort of "Oh crap you just missed a major reveal/twist/plotpoint" way.) If "saving up" comments, I would think three or four times max would be reasonable.

Ian

great to see you smiling throughout this one Nat , the mood and setting of this movie is just incredible, the rain just suits the style of this movie perfectly and the music just WOW adds so much tension i had chills the last 30 mins ,kept trying to read the label on your bottle you were drinking to see what it was I'm always curious but allas i failed no matter 🙂 About the pausing to chat personally I love hearing you chat during the recording I've never minded one bit, I sync up with the blurred image not the timer so it takes a minute every time I pause but if it's the way it is from here on in I can manage, if I were to pick I'd change nothing but that's just my opinion no biggie either way. on that note have a great weekend nat enjoy the sunshine if its nice and as always stay golden 💛

So, the unicorn thing was Ridley Scott’s way of subtly confirming that Deckard is a replicant. Pretty much everyone in the cast and crew was against it, because it doesn’t really make sense for a lot of reasons, but with complete control over the content of the Final Cut, Scott had the unicorn stuff added. See, all the replicants have a connection to a particular animal. Leon with the tortoise question, Zora’s snake, Roy howls like a wolf, Pris has the stripe across her face and Sebastian finds her in the garbage like a raccoon, and Rachel is introduced along with an owl. So, there’s the unicorn for Deckard. There’s also a scene where his eyes glow like a replicant’s. Also, you definitely have to watch 2049. Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies, but I’m actually not sure which is better

Darryl Low

If only the good folks of Los Angeles, 2019 knew what they were in for the following year.... At least they would have a shedload of Nattie G reactions to look forward to 😊 Been really looking forward to your reaction to this movie Nat, and it was great to watch along with you . Your reading of the opening text was.. oh, boy! And you empathizing with the replicants. Rutger Hauer gives an amazing performance, and he wrote his character's final speech himself. I knew that the lighting, art and sound design would make an impression on you. It is so good. It really shows off how Ridley Scott likes to create and build a believable world. You will definitely need to watch his next movie Legend. I saw this movie in 1982 when it came out. I was 12, and 2019 seemed a long way off and now we have passed it! Really is quite frightening. This movie, and a lot of others never predicted one thing though - Mobile Phones!! You noticed what they call The Curse of Blade Runner, as several of the companies that you see advertised throughout the movie went out of business before 2019, Pan-Am being the biggest.

Darryl Low

The Bradbury Building in L.A. was the big building that was used for J.F. Sebastian's appartment and the final showdown. The score by Vangelis creates an amazing soundscape. He is a Greek composer and he wrote a lot of electronic music in the 70s, Pulstar being one of his most known pieces, and also the Chariots of Fire theme. Harrison Ford's character was meant to wear a hat in the movie, like a film noir detective, but as he had literally just finished playing Indiana Jones, Ford said no. And now that looks like being your next weekend reaction. Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, John Williams & Nattie Gold. A formidable foursome, and I can't wait to watch it. As always, thanks for a fantastic week of videos. Have a wonderful weekend Nat 💛

Jack Mellor

The unicorn dream and the origami figure at the end is indicative of the theory, that’s made for much discussion since the film came out in 1982, that Deckard is a replicant himself, that Gaff (the moustache guy towards the end) knows about it, and left the figure for him to find, and give him doubts of his own. There are several suggestions throughout the movie that he could be a replicant, notably one scene with him and Rachel in his apartment early on in which for a brief moment his eyes are that Replicant red colour, also at the end Gaff saying Deckard did “a mans job”, among a few other clues. It’s all very intriguing, and worth looking into if movie theories are any kind of fascinating to you, Nat. You were bang on about this movie being full of metaphors and symbolistic questions about what it means to be human. Blade Runner was one of the first modern science fiction films to be truly ambiguous in its approach to the story. I think it’s excellent. But moving on, you gotta watch the sequel, 2049, soon.

Ken

Me - "Oh boy, here it comes" Roy - "I've seen things..." Natalie - *hysterical laughter* lol thanks, Tyler

Patrick Armbruster

I see both points about pausing and talking over the movie... For the youtube videos, pausing certainly makes sense – for watching along with a separate copy here on Patreon it can be a drag to sync up again after each pause (talking about a movie with more pauses required, not this one, of course). I'm cool either way: It would be helpful, if you could put a countdown for us to hit pause, just "3, 2, 1, x", then we could get used to doing that.

Edward Olson

Yes, no danger of "copyright strikes" since that is a YouTube thing. But definitely danger of actual Copyright Lawsuit from the owner of the actual copyright. A single copyright violation can result in a $200,000 penalty.

Valar Dohaeris

Great Reaction, as always. About the movie, and versions "dilema"... For me, the original theatrical will always be my version, as Christopher Reeves will always be the real Superman, because they are the ones I saw as a kid. But trying to be more analytic, in one part, this version seems a much rounded and artistic than the theatrical. And a nice version for a rewatch and rejoice in the expectacular art direction, as Nat did very vocally ;) But seeing that Nat didn't pick on many things and felt a bit lost from time to time (and considering Nat as a pretty smart cookie), I would say that the changes forced by the studio at the time mainly focused on making the movie easyer to understand for the general plubic (with the voice over of Harrison mainly) weren't that bad. It was evident that replicants were virtually indistinguishible from humans (so Nat, they had feelings, eat food, pee and all the human things), it was clear who the replicants were and that Rutger saved Rick's life because he learned to appreciate life as the most precious thing when he was about to loose it. Other changes are more debatible: the Hollywood happy ending I think was too much, but who knows. The 2 hours of this version is also much longer than the era average (less than 90mins). Probably this final version would have tanked at the time... What I don't like for sure is the whole Unicorn thing. I guess we can agree than the Unicorn dream suggests that Rick is also a Replicant with memories implanted and that the other cop knew like Rick knew about Rachel's childhood. I guess in this ending the cop let them both go, because they are going to die anyway... But still decides to let Rick know he is a Replicant with the origamy unicorn? Isn't that vicious? It doesn't click with me. In fact I do preffer any version that omits the Unicorn dream and leaves the origamy one in the end, as a wink that the cop was there but he decided to not kill Rachel... These are my thoughts. What about you fellow Natrmy brothers? P.S. I vote no on the pauses. Even with only one in this reaction, I see I'm not gonna like the experience at all...

Edward Olson

I agree. I have the film, I can turn on subtitles. I know what they are saying while you're talking. I DO NOT WANT ANY PAUSING.

Andrew T

omg. The "running through glass" commentary had me rolling.

Ken

I say yes to pausing. It'd be cool to hear you go into more detail with your thoughts without feeling rushed or without talking missing dialog. The timer makes it easy enough to stay synced

Valar Dohaeris

It also didn't make the theatrical cut, which I prefer. The unicorn dream plus the origami in the end means that the other cop wants Rick to know he's a replicant... What a dick move. For me the unicorn origami feels better as a wink that he was there but didn't kill Rachel in the end... Nice move.

Darryl Low

I think Nat has proved that the movie can be followed without the voiceover. As for Deckard being a replicant, I don't like the idea at all. If that was Ridley's idea all along, then no wonder he didn't tell Harrison. If he knew he was playing an android, he would of passed on the film. Harrison is all about human characteristics and creating an emotional response for the audience.

Andrew T

So here's my feelings on the timecode idea. I have no problem with pausing or talking over commentary; let's just get that out of the way. I didn't find the timecode useful. I'm wondering if, instead of timecode, do an 8-10 countdown to a pause point, then another countdown to resuming the video. I imagine the work in post would be no more involved than pausing/resuming timecode. Anyway, I can deal with any method, I just found I never really relied on the timecode to re-sync the playback.

Valar Dohaeris

Sorry to comment again, but this is about stupid things I picked out today that didn't were off in the 80's about a "2019" future... Please feel free to join in with your own. * 80's Shoulder pads were a "future" thing in all movies :D * Assuming Rick is about 35-40 years in 2019, it doesn't make any sense that most of his personal pictures where black&white. That were the pictures of my parents, but not mine being almost 50 in 2019... * Climate-change-much on a LA where is always raining? Nice. * Also, it's always dark even when the sun is up because of the polution levels? How is not all that people dead? You see some masks in the movie, but I would think masks would be mandatory... oh wait, this is the US ;) (political joke-much? no? sorry.) * As in all old ScyFy movies, It's funny that they have voice recognition, but the voice of the machines are semi-robotic. * The most advance UI (for the photo viewer) wasn't touch screens, but a pathetic voice control... xbox kinect-much. ... I'll edit if I remember more... :P Please join.

SmokeAndACoffee

Love that you watched this! Great movie; and Blade Runner 2049 is just as good. Also if you enjoy this style and feel, I highly recommend Altered Carbon on Netflix when you get ready to start a new series. I didn't care for the time code showing, personally; but don't mind the pauses, though a quick "be ready to pause in 3... 2... 1..." might be helpful. Can't wait to watch more with you! Thank you so much, Nat <3

SmokeAndACoffee

Also sorta of a semi-confirmed fan theory; Blade Runner and the Alien series are kinda-sorta in the same universe. It's never directly mentioned in the films, but Tyrell from Blade Runner and Wayland (CEO of Wayland Corp in Alien) were supposed to be business partners at one point or something. Also a small Firefly/Serenity tie-in. In the first episode of Firefly when Mal is using that gun-turrent to fire at the income air-ships; there is a brief moment when it shows the HUD (heads up display) of the turret where the Wayland Corp logo can be seen. Joss Whedon was working on filming Alien: Ressurection about the same time he started on Firefly, so he added that in subtly as a sort of fun nod or something, but.... ... that has led to the fan theory of "Earth that Was" that is spoken of in Firefly/Serenity, no one really knows why Earth was abandoned, so it's speculated that the Aliens finally infested and took over Earth

Valar Dohaeris

I started with Altered Carbon, but left it half way. I was really afraid that the premise was going to get silly with people being others and stupid surprises as main plot points... Is it good?

Anonymous

I think this was my first time watching this cut of the movie. And it's been a while, so I couldn't remember if the Deckard things alluding to him being a Replicant were in a cut or just extra-movie discussion. I like this version the best, I think. My two cents on pausing: I'll agree with the others about a count down to the Pause vs Time Code. Because knowing you're about to Pause is better. The one time it happened I was several seconds past pausing my copy. But I like the idea of hearing more of your thoughts/opinions, it's kind of the whole point of watching these with you!

Ra's al Cool

I feel that this film is the peak of practical set, lighting, and visual effects design in the traditional (pre-digital) form. Even all the computer visuals and whatnot were still largely hand-animated at this point. So when you see something in the film, you can be assured they did it practically with light, miniatures, actual sets etc, which is really interesting. Not to diminish digital effects in any way, but I do think all the really lush practical locations add to the gritty tone of the film.

MotoDork

Timecodes have never worked for me. I watch everything on blu-ray, and the timecodes never line up. I just use the blurred image of the film to synchronize.

Michael Labs

I liked the picture/timer setup just fine; as to pausing the movie-- it wouldn't bother me much although I would suggest sparingly using the technique. Noticed the crushing on Harrison Ford and I suggest (perhaps another Natmares entry) "What Lies Beneath" starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer.

It Hurt A Lot

I don't think pausing is necessary. Even though you did it only once it always existed in my brain to be ready and it took away from my enjoyment. I don't want to have to think about it while I'm watching a movie. Just do what you do. Everything can't be perfect.

Andrew T

I watched this movie as a kid in a theater. My brain back then was all about the special effects and Han Solo starring in another movie. Never really caught on to the messages of metaphors. That's just a set up to my point which is, now that I've grown up and become more analytical, I have a much greater appreciation for Blade Runner. Of course, just being older doesn't mean I have the answers; it just means I have more questions. Having just watched this again, I had to look into some of the meaning behind some of the stuff in this movie. There's a lot, but I'll just point this one thing out, because it gave me a "holy sh*t" moment. It's (crudely speaking) about the humanity of Blade Runners vs. the humanity of Replicants. By the end of the film, with Roy Batty saving/sparing Deckard's life, and rewinding further, Rachael saving Deckard's life, juxtaposed with Deckard's (and all Blade Runners') business of ending Replicants' lives, it gives profound meaning to Tyrell Corporation's motto that Replicants are "more human than human." Anyway, I'm sure this is "duh" info for the intellectual types here, but I just needed a place to express my "omg-that's-so-cool" moment.

SmokeAndACoffee

Yea, ultimately I agree with this. Whoever is complaining about you talking over stuff... that's kinda the whole point of watching this with you. Maybe if you know you want to say something in-depth or critique/admire something for a long moment, do a pause, but in general you talking during scenes isn't bothersome to most imo

Simon Haynes

Would rather no pausing.

Opti_Frog

Haven't even started watching the movie yet, and i know i'm not gonna like the pauses. I don't watch reactions on my monitor, i watch them on my tv, in bed. I don't want to have to constantly get up to pause and unpause. But then, i've never been bothered by you talking over some dialogue. I vote no on pauses. Edit: Haha, i didn't even notice the first pause since i keep my own video in the bottom left corner, and there was no warning. Is Deckard a replicant? No easy answers. Even Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott disagrees with each other on that point.

Joseph Tamburo

Loved this reaction. I look forward to you doing some similar slower paced films in the future. You'll get a mixed reaction on the pausing. For myself currently the only times I don't enjoy a reaction of yours is when you've talked over an important bit of the film and then you keep asking questions as the film goes along which were answered by the important bit you missed earlier; so I'm 100% all for adding pauses. Having said that I understand the view point of the other folks that find pausing distracting.

Bruce Bromley

I prefer that if you feel the need to pause to talk about a moment or a question, do so while it is fresh in your mind. Even if it is something that is answered soon in the film. The clock is the best way to sync it back up. Sure, some of the points Nat, or for that matter, any reactor focus on, may cause an eye roll, it's the exact reason I watch them.

Kelvin

I haven't seen this in a while, looking forward to revisiting

Bruce Bromley

Corporations were always evil in the 80's. I always thought back than you could also connect Con-Amalgamated, Con-Am 27, from Outland. Along with OCP of Robocop.

Bruce Bromley

I'd had always thought that Deckard's photo's were another hint at being a replicant himself.

Ben Wheeler

Assuming Raiders of the Lost Ark is coming next I vote for continuing the Harrison-a-thon with The Fugitive and Air Force One

Valar Dohaeris

Omg... So true. It has aged so badly. I didn't even remember it, but watching with 2021 eyes it itches like a sore throat.

Valar Dohaeris

Reading all the comments I feel that the pauses yes/no debate polarizes this group more than Trumpism to the whole world... We are better than this. Nat, do what feels best for you. We'll be here...

G. T. Blackwell

Not a fan of the pausing but I would suggest two things if you plan to continue it: 1) Give us a little warning so we can pause simultaneously and 2) leave the timestamp up while the movie is paused, so that if you didn't get to the pause button in time we know where to go back to in the movie.

Anonymous

I love this film, one of my all time favourites. I'd also reccomend 12 Monkeys, Gattaca or (for something a bit stranger) Existenz as great sc-fi movies.

Anonymous

was not entertained. if the pausing is going to be the normal I will have to cancel payments. I will not pay if not entertained. sorry to sound so butt heady but I could not watch this time because of the pausing

Thomas Malley

aw, 'the fugitive' holds such a special place in my heart. I just love that film. I never get tired of it.

Thomas Yanez

I'm OK with the pausing. Better than than having you miss a plot point because you have something you want to say. Maybe just give us a heads up when it is coming.

Joel

Love the pauses, wish other reactors would do it. One thing you could do to make the sync easier is if you do a quick countdown before each pause. :)

Myles Away

Replicants are not actually robots. They are organic beings. The movie refers to them as machines in more of a pejorative way. Humans are trying to dehumanize them as much as possible. This is because Replicants could overthrow humans very easily. They are essentially super soldiers. There was one key line you may have missed because of the coo-coo-clock but Roy says to Sebastian "We're no computers, Sebastian. We're physical." The sequel makes this much more clear. Really glad you enjoyed this film. It is one of my favourites. Even with the flaws. The miniature work alone is worth watching.

RocktSurgeon

The lighting, and world design/style is incredible, completely on board with you about it. As much as you liked it, you really should watch BladeRunner 2049 soon. It’s a beautiful movie too, and has some great themes. BladeRunner didn’t create cyberpunk (that would probably be the book Neuromancer by William Gibson, and some contributions from Japanese Anime around the same time) but it did play a huge part creating the dystopic Neo-Noire look. The neon, ever-present advertising, super tall buildings and grime are both very beautiful (I love the style) and great for building a world where everyone but the most wealthy/corporate exec type is very dehumanized.

RocktSurgeon

A big part of the theme in Blade Runner and similar movies/shows etc is questioning what it means to be human. The comment about more human than human... this and the sequel question what makes a human different from a creation that breathes, eats, feels pain and emotion and whether humans might actually be worse examples of what we call “humanity” (empathy, compassion, appreciation of beauty etc).

Erik Stevenson

Glad you liked it! Definitely looking forward to the eventual BR 2049 reaction, it's equally slow paced and equally beautifully designed.

Ortizmo2000

2049 is a GREAT sequel. Felt like Ridley was back in the captain's chair myself.

Alan Kobb

The whole business about the title of the movie and Ford's job is confusing. The movie comes from a novel by Phillip K. Dick called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?". The term blade runner never appears in the book. The screenwriter named it after another dystopian book called The Bladerunner by Alan Noorse. This 1974 book, which is set in the distant future (the year 2009), is about a time where anyone who needs medical treatment of any kind must allow themselves to be sterilized in order to weed out inferior people. Doctors depend on people called "bladerunners" to steal drugs and medical equipment like scalpals (blades). The Bladerunner might hit home right about now because a deadly epidemic hits New York City, and nobody is willing to accept treatment until it's too late. It's up to the bladerunners to spread the word and save the city. Evidently the screenwriter thought "blade runners" sounded cool, so he called it that. Vangelis's name is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable. He won an Acadamy Award for his score for the movie Chariots of Fire in 1981. If you Google that wondeerful song, you'll probably remember it instantly.

Anonymous

I think instead of pausing during the movie it would be more beneficial to just talk about it in depth at the end more. You could look at the way Blind Wave's channel does it, they all keep notepads to write down things they dont want to forget but want to talk about, then have a discussion at the end of the movie, which avoids desync with the viewer from pausing.

Thomas Yanez

If you had at least tried it, you would have seen that she only paused once. Not really a big deal.

Robert Reichle

I'm ok with having to re-sync my movie after a pause because I always have to do that anyway. I use the blurry image to get back in sync. It takes tweaking, but it's not a big deal.

Ortizmo2000

"Legend" with Tom Cruise and Tim Curry should be your next choice. Another R. Scott classic.

This_Jedi_crafts

Laughed out loud with "Nat quotes" - i.e. "Are those manufactured Ostriches, as well?" AND....when we enter the seedy part of town and the show the dancers - "Whey are they wearing MASKS? - ..are they supposed to be SEXY?" - "they look like JASON!" I think you would like "The Island" (with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansen) and the remake of "Total Recall" And for possible series: SENSE8

Matthew Periolat

Don’t worry about the laughter, EVERY SciFi fan knows Roy’s final monologue and has their own take and attachment. Personally, I don’t object to you talking over the movie, it’s organic, it happens, it’s cool. Having said that, I also do not object to experiments with your videos, so by all means, try if it creates something better for you. Never hear me complain. Now, if you like Harrison Ford, it’s recommendation time. If you want action/mystery, ya gotta do The Fugitive. If you want acting Ford while he’s still on the hunky side, Regarding Henry is really good too. Oh, and if you like the music style of Vangelis, there is his iconic masterpiece - he did the score and theme for Chariots of Fire. As a track athlete and with the Tokyo Olympics coming, might consider that as well. As for me, as a first time watch, this was such a creative idea - a Sci Fil film noir that doesn’t answer all the questions it asks. It’s terrific in that regard and nice to experience that kind of a movie. Also love your appreciation for the lighting and set design. Cannot wait to see you with movies like Batman 1989, that’s a feast. I get the same way with film scores, small nuance acting and so forth. It’s all appreciating an art and movies are art after all. Still Golden until next time.

"Why "blade Runner"? Why is that what they are called?" Because they walk the line between human and machine and are expected to know the difference.

Ortizmo2000

The apartment where JF Sebastian lives is an actual place called The Bradbury Building in downtown LA. It's a functioning business building to this day and has been used in several film productions including "Wolf" starring Jack Nicholson and the video for "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" by Genesis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradbury_Building

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I gotta say I didn't mind the pause. It's kind of a cheat if you consider that you wouldn't be able to pause it in the theater, but we're not in a theater. And I've honestly done that while watching something with friends, certain things kind of justify a, "hold up, did they just say... ?" Although I imagine it could get annoying if done more than rarely, not implying a max quota or anything but, use your best judgement I suppose, I'm good with it. The counter was a good idea as well, but a heads up before pausing would also be cool.

Darren Penuliar

I think I would prefer this as well. But I get that she might not want to veer from the format for her youtube channel which has been comments/commentary sprinkled throughout the film viewing rather than a longer discussion at the end.

Ortizmo2000

The film where pausing would be warranted: The Usual Suspects. Big time.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Big Ridley Scott fan here as well. I will say however, like George Lucas, Scott has a habit of reconning his work, it can be irritating. I don't know how often it's studio interference, but I have heard that he oftentimes second guesses himself, recuts, and then later regrets it. He did that in "Prometheus" I believe, but in a much more major way with "Legend" (1985). Which btw is a movie I still love from my childhood, but the two cuts are almost entirely different films. I would watch the theatrical cut all the time as a kid and loved the Tangerine Dream score, which was apparently one of the major changes made. Jerry Goldsmith had already made the entire score but Scott threw it out, and cut a ton of footage, after he didn't like the audience reactions at a test screening. After seeing the extended cut, I still kind of favor the Tangerine Dream soundtrack because it was so unique and kind of haunting, but regardless if which you prefer, the movie as a whole was so much better with the original scenes intact, I think most people would agree. Going back to the theatrical cut, it's almost jarringly short by comparison, and no where near as immersive. I kind of wish I could edit a version for myself that has the original footage with the TD score. It also kind of bothered me when Scott put the kibosh on the Alien film Neill Blomkamp was working on. Apparently he's very protective of his baby, his franchise, which is understandable, especially after the travesty that was the Alien Vs Predator series. Don't get me wrong, I wanted those films to succeed, in part because I own several of the first Black Horse Comics Alien Vs Predator comic books and would love to see their value go up. But those movies just sucked. So I get why Scott would be that way, but I do believe Blomkamp would have done something interesting, and I can't say what Scott has done since then with the franchise doesn't make wonder what could have been.

Aaron Taft

I have rewatched your reactions multiple times; your reaction to The Matrix was one where I never got lost. I was always able to syncronize with ya, cuz ya had the Closed Caption visible. If ya can block or blure out everything but the closed captioning; I should never have any trouble following ya, even if ya pause.

BNJ

OMG when she busted out laughing when Roy was giving his final speech caught me so off guard. I was like WTF did I miss?

Anonymous

Good stuff Nat. Keep the timer cause it makes it easier to sync

Robb Hollen

Now that you've seen BR, check this out. Someone made this when LA tried to ban fireworks last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPqE-HutvB0

If you want answer you'll need to watch 2049

Malcolm Wolf

I was planning on quietly leaving this month due to my frustrations from you talking over some pretty key moments I was excited for you to experience, so I really appreciate you looking for ways to avoid that. To me anything is better than missing a big reveal/special moment that a lot of us have in mind when we sign up for reactions such as this. I'll also add that the vast majority of human communication is non-verbal, and a silent WTF face can speak volumes.

Anonymous

The Final Cut is on HBO MAX. Hopefully we watch 2049 soon.

In regards to the unicorn. Remember when Deckard was telling Rachel about her memories, telling her thats she is a replicant, the unicorn was a memory not a dream, thats why he was awake. The origami at the end was a reference to that memory, that the other cop knows about it and hence made the unicorn to tell Deckard that he knows...

Aaron Taft

See Nat this is what I don't get about Animal lovers; ya lose it when there's a dog on the field of Battle in Gladiator, ya weep openly in Game of Thrones when they kill a Dire Wolf; but when ya watch Roy die in Blade Runner ya laugh and regale us with tails of Burning Man. I can count on one hand the things in my life that have filled me with more emotion then the Tears in the Rain scene ya just laughed and talked through. But I must admit, it is the best experience I've ever had with any girl watching this movie. You were at least awake; every female I have ever watched this with since 1980's, including my mother, fell asleep long before this movie's climax.

warcrimes

No pausing please. You do miss some plot points occassionaly and it is a bit frustrating but you get by and I don't want to have to pause and reset the synch, ruins pacing and takes me out of the experience too much. Plus, I'm often watching a different source so the times won't match anyway. EDIT: in the epilogue you said "I'm only human"...made me laugh.

A Vicarious View

You should definitely see Blade Runner: 2049. I loved it. There are also 3 short films that set up the sequel: -Blackout 2022 (the only animated one) -2036: Nexus Dawn -2048: Nowhere to Run

Robert Reichle

Some of the things that were hard to understand would have been revealed by the Film Noir narration in the original theatrical version. I enjoy all the versions, but the ones without the narration (that people complain about all the time) always seem lacking to me. The way Ford reads those lines does sound a bit cheesy, but to me, they need to be there.

Anonymous

The pausing absolutely doesn't work for me. After the first pause it took 30 seconds to get re-synced (not helped by all the blurry shots looking similar in that scene). Also, pausing, waiting and then saying "oh, I paused" didn't help. It's worth trying new things to create better reactions, so I don't mind for this one, but.. sorry, these watch-along patreon versions will probably be more hassle than they're worth for me if you keep this format. I really love your work and I'm not trying to be a debbie downer. Maybe try adding "pauses" in post for the youtube versions?

Cripkie

ha yeah the tech evolution in old scifi is so idealistic. The reality was that entertainment trumped all other avenues of innovation. Its why we have phones that have access to every possible visual desire instead of flying cars.

Cripkie

My little brother ran through a glass sliding door drunk when we were kids. The rail gave way before the glass did, but anecdotes aren't exactly science so...yeah.

Obsolyeet

On to pause or not, go with whichever you like. It's your channel. You do you. It took like 3 seconds to resync so not a big deal.

Anakin Starkiller

This brought to you by the visual team who worked on Close Encounters of The Third Kind , Star Wars and Star Trek The Motion Picture 😀

Anakin Starkiller

The Tyrell mainly works in advanced biotechnology and advanced robotics. I mean I call them Androids the film calls them replicants.

Kevin Townsend

Great movie, Harrison Ford never fails to entertain. Also, the very underrated Rutger Hauer.

Rime Pendragon

Everybody states their opinion politely and you call that polarizing ? Shaking my head...

My_Cousin_Mose

It appears this isn't going to be unanimous, I vote in favor of pausing. It wasn't difficult to resync at all for me. It really sucks when you miss important details and I'm also interested in your analysis on what we're watching. Some stuff we watch it isn't as needed for, but for shows like GOT I feel you would be picking up on a lot of little nuggets of info if you had the ability to pause and take a moment to air your thoughts.

Fraser

To me the “syncing up” is the most painful thing I have to go through with reactions. I feel a sense of relief when it’s done, knowing that I’ll have to do it multiple times throughout one film sounds like a bit of dealbreaker for me sadly. I totally get the reason this has been attempted but I just don’t like pausing films in general since it shouldn’t be necessary. I have thought recently you could give more detailed reviews at the end of your reactions so maybe you can pause on your end and edit over it for us, then you can go over your points at the end? Just a thought

Fraser

I was really looking forward to your reaction to blade runner since it’s my favourite film, I honestly don’t think I can attempt it knowing that these pauses are there, a real shame.

WackySwacky

Game of Thrones would be a good one to pause. That show has a lot of really important bits of dialogue that can be missed really easily. Quite of few times you've been confused about certain parts of the show because you talked over the dialogue. So pausing should probably help with that.

WackySwacky

Budweiser still kicking though. Not the best beer, but a resilient one.

Anonymous

*chuckle* ...and it turns out there was only one pause :)

Joe Blankenship

Right? I never have trouble getting back in sync. The worst is if you're listening to a podcast commentary and you get out of sync. Those are a pain.

Anonymous

When it comes too missing stuff I’ve had to stop watching other reactors because they’d constantly stop paying attention. You do pretty good imo. 👍

Jomero

If you're at all wondering, the genre of this movie actually has a title. While it falls under the umbrella of Sci-Fi, it's a subgenre called "Cyberpunk." It is generally set in a near-futuristic backdrop with a film noir tone (but not always expressly that). Often simultaneously dirty and grimy while brightly lit and full of neon and advertisements and tech. Generally it also has corporations that have merged into mega-corporations and cities have become extremely large and sprawling, with many large buildings looming.

Anonymous

Ok, _Blade Runner: 2049_, right away!!

Anonymous

If you loved the visual flair of this, Nat, you're going to *adore* Blade Runner 2049. Your eyes will melt (in a good way!). It's one of the few sequels out there that's arguably even better than the original. SO. GOOD.

Joe Blankenship

If there was a bigger visual cue for when the pause is coming, it would help. But overall, I don't have that much trouble syncing up.

Steve J

I throw in my vote for no pauses. Not that I think it matters too much either way, I just like the flow of the movie with the reaction. My expectation is that you will talk over characters, talk over plot points, miss things, see things I missed, go off on some crazy tangent in the middle of a scene, etc, etc. Not sure about everybody else but that's what I put in my $5 for.

Sir_Dalagad

Pauses are mostly a good thing because you can stop to comment without talking over and missing important or interesting bits. Also, you should be able to take breaks easily when life interrupts. It really isn't that hard to sync up,

Anonymous

I have never seen thiS film before now and I'm a huge sci-fi nerd. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it for 1st time with you Natalie. I found I think that wasn't a good idea Singing is not that hard That's nice come in the maoment

Loneclaw

You know, if you're really into good lighting, you may want to check out the movie "Dark City" from 1998. It's a criminally underrated movie that deals with a lot of interesting themes. I really do think you'd like it. :3

Balmung

Ok so this might've been mentioned before but I couldn't find it. The name Blade Runner is meaningless in the context of this movie. The name is taken from a different novel, completely unrelated. They just liked the name and used it for this movie. "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" wasn't as catchy for a blockbuster.

Anonymous

But make sure it’s the Director’s Cut because the theatrical version just out and gives away the mystery right at the beginning!

Anonymous

But the scene where you see Pris break a car window with her elbow when she’s first running from Sebastian? That was for real. Darryl Hannah slipped on the wet pavement and her elbow went through the glass and it was not breakable prop glass. She chipped her elbow in eight places but kept her cool and didn’t break character so they used that scene in the final movie.

Nicholas Sulikowski

A few things. 1: The fact that you got most if not everything that this movie was presenting after one viewing (and me after a couple viewings because I was sleepy) I think confirms that the overbearing voice-over narration in the theatrical cut was unnecessary. The audience doesn't need to have it all explained to them. Never underestimate an audience. They tend to be pretty clever most of the time. And if there are any lingering questions, the movie definitely makes one want to re-watch it. Which is wonderful. I love films that make the audience think. 2: The speech that Roy Batty gives was largely ad-libbed. It's one of the most famous speeches in film, and it was made up on the spot. Bravo, Rutger Hauer. 3: "Tim Burton" "Coraline" Mmm.... well, as it turns out Tim Burton had absolutely nothing to do with Coraline. That was a film based on a novel by Neil Gaiman and directed by Henry Selick. Selick interestingly enough has been involved in a few Burton productions like The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, where it was largely his directing and style that took precedence. (With James, it was based on a novel by Roald Dahl, the writer of the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.) He's kind of an invisible talent, as many people assume that X animated film produced by Tim Burton is all him. Often it is a Selick baby, as evidenced by Coraline and arguably James and the Giant Peach. Some extra trivia, Coraline was done by an animation studio called Laika. They have been a studio that has laser focused on doing stop-animation at a time when it's rare and unprofitable, and they're geniuses at it. Their films include Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings (beautiful and emotional film), and Missing Link.)

Thoko

I haven't watched this reaction yet, and I'm not sure that I will, now that you mention that your intention is to pause it repeatedly. It takes time to get my copy into sync, and I dislike the idea of being forced to repeatedly get back into sync with you.

Logan Kerlee

I super enjoyed this movie! First time for me, watching it. I totally didn't mind the pacing. It didn't feel slow it just wasn't action packed. Each scene had incredible depth and required attention - that's why I have such a positive reaction to this film. Most often, in movies these days scenes are vacant and filled without meaning and lack the depth that this film provides. At the end of this I was left with a feeling of it being complete, without a need for a sequel or follow up film. (also, around twenty or so minutes into the film there was a quote by a character, can't remember who - "More human than human." hahaha, that made me smile right away! xD Growing up I listened to rock/metal a good bit so of course I recognized that from White Zombie's song - More Humand Than Human from their 1995 album Astro-Creep: 2000 - Songs of Love, Destruction and Other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head.)

Logan Kerlee

Oh! The syncing was super easy to follow this time! I prefer it with the numbers shown onscreen - personally. That's me, I haven't read through other people's reactions quite yet.

Logan Kerlee

Agreed. The pausing wasn't an issue for me to maneuver around, this time around at least. I also prefer to it her speaking over scenes. ((This especially is true when I haven't ever watched the show/movie before)) Speaking over scenes really grinds my gears when I'm watching a show with a person but if I'm watching a reaction to something that I've already seen it isn't such a huge deal. This movie, I've never seen before so I was very thankful for the pausing! Normally I'd just watch a show/movie on my own first but I wanted to experiment with this seeing as how you were trying something new - I figured that I should as well. :) It turned out great!!

Logan Kerlee

Agreed. I'm not going anywhere, whichever method she decides to stick with. I prefer the pausing, but that's me. Staying synced isn't a struggle for me, really. The two things played alongside each other throughout and were only off by a second or less. Wasn't difficult at all to manage. lol, the only bit that I struggled with was that I wasn't using her page or whatever to watch it from - so I had to sync it manually (even with the additional challenge, I preferred this method).

Logan Kerlee

Rutger Hauer did an amazing job! It's a shame that he's no longer with us but he definitely was attached to some great films before he passed.

navghtivs

I don't know why people have problem getting things synced, the trick is if you are a little out of sync, hit pause and then unpause in one of the players, until things are in sync, I found that very easy, it's not rocket science.

Anonymous

My thoughts exactly. I prefer pausing, especially with a counter. But I'm happy either way.

Ron K

It's awesome that you're trying different things. Like a lot of people on here I don't understand why some patreons have such an issue with the synching. I think the pausing is preferable to you missing plot points cause you're trying to be more entertaining for our sake. You always say you'll catch it when you edit but then we don't get to see that reaction. Maybe announcing you are pausing, doing a count down when you go to unpause will make it easier for people. Also, I don't know if it's an option but maybe if you unblurred the movie just for a few seconds after you unpause will make it easier too.

JerichoFalls

Not a fan of the pause but I do like the timer! Either way thanks for the reaction!

Anonymous

It seems kinda silly for people to have a problem with you talking - isn't that sorta the point? If someone wants to watch without commentary, they probably shouldn't be watching a reaction video.

Robert Haynes

I like the concept of the pause, and the timer made things easy to sync up. Now that you've watched this, I really hope you will watch Blade Runner 2049. I was skeptical of any sequel to this, but it was masterfully done and really felt like a great expansion to the world, and one that asks plenty of new existential questions.

Anonymous

Loved watching this along with you. It is one of my favorite movies. I first saw it when it was released in theaters. I was only 16 at the time. It is a movie that aspires to be more than just a standard good guy vs bad guy sci-fi flick. And it is more than that. It makes you think. As they keep making these replicants more and more human like, at what point have they actually made a human. Or at least a being so close to a human that it's no longer eithical to treat them in this manner. Imagine not only being created as a slave that can be terminated for the simplest transgression without a trial or hearing but also to come into existence knowing that at best you will only live 4 years. That's horrible and I think justifies a lot of the actions, no matter how violent and lethal, taken by the replicants in this movie. Roy's speach on the roof at the end also demonstrates that these beings have reached a stage of being able to ponder the same abstract questions that we humans do. Who am I? Where am I going? Whats the point of all this?

Anonymous

I think the little people that appeared in multipll,e scenes, where the same one that appeared as the pets in the JF Sebastion Apt.

Natalie 5 minutes into the movie: "What if he falls in love with a replicant, I feel like that's gonna happen." Me: "Mother f*****" lol

You gotta watch the sequel now! 2049 is a masterpiece

Matt Gwinn

Please don't start pausing the movie. What a lot of Youtubers do is add text comments while they're editing. not only does it not disrupt the syncing, you also have time to think things over and get your thoughts together.

David Blake

Hi. I know that pausing a movie to comment on it better makes sense, but only if you don't need to edit the movie and add my copy on top of it. I can also accept the fact of only ONE break per movie but, please, I ask you to always write it down in the notes under the movie on Patreon the exact minute you stopped watching (in that way it doesn't take me an hour to watch the whole movie before I find out what the point is and then complete the editing). There are other people who often pause videos of their reactions, such as "Duo Reacts": they are good and I would like to subscribe to their channel too, but they have crazy prices and they pause ALL their videos and I can't miss hours editing their videos, so I will never subscribe to their Patreon channel. I like yours a lot, but if the breaks thing becomes different from what I wrote a little while ago, unfortunately I will have to stop here. I'm sorry.

David Blake

The problem is not the comment. Of course we watch the reactions to the movies for commentary, otherwise we would just watch the movies. We only ask to think about who has to edit the movie to synchronize the two movies. However, I added a comment a little while ago where I explain my concept better.

Christopher French

The syncing was easy. I had no problem. Do what you like. My biggest beef? The best scene in the movie is happening. One of the best lines in all of cinema happens. And she laughs because it's a line her boyfriend uses a lot. Completely sucks her out of the moment. I'm sure she was brought back in quickly but... ooof. Still, I'm glad you got a chance to see this utter classic.

David Blake

I add one thing: if you wrote in the notes under the video the exact minute (or minutes) of the break (or breaks) you would help us a lot.

I would imagine I could crash through 2 1/2 glass doors and be ok

cosmic wave

The title "Blade Runner" seems only to make sense as reference to the two sided nature of Deckard, i am on board with Ridley Scotts changes. Though I am a scifi fan, i never sat through this classic. It just never clicked with me. Thanks for changing that. For my part - I think the best thing about this movie is that Deckard is a replikant, and i remember this question being the intriguing thing about the novel, too, when i read it in school - though i have to revisit that now, as well.

cosmic wave

For the pausing, i don't mind it, but what really helps is the timer! I mostly watch movies in parts and your reactions as well so it is an immense help to find where to continue with the video.

Marty McGee

I've always been lukewarm on Blade Runner. I've seen it a few times now. Usually because I've had friends who were super into it. I do appreciate the acting and I do think the story concept is pretty cool. Even if it has become sort of a trope in the years since. Seeing your reaction to it has made me appreciate the technical aspects (lighting, sound, set designs) more than I used to. The style still isn't my cup of tea, and the story leaves me feeling kind of meh. Too dark and depressing for me. I think you would really like BR 2049 for the same art and technical aspects. I watched it as well really wanting to like it, but it left me feeling kind of the same as this one. So if you liked this then I bet you would like the sequel as well.

Nicholas Hentges

You should definitely check out the 2049 as well. And if you like this movie maybe check out Raised by Wolves on HBOMAX, also a Ridley Scott future android kinda thing. And the detective movie with horror elements vibes you were getting was the noir vibes coming through very strong, it influenced the music (noir saxophones but with synthesizers instead) and the lighting (Venetian blinds, high contrast) most noticeably probably.

Anonymous

This film is very atmospheric and foreboding, just like Ridley Scott's earlier film Alien. In fact, there is a long running theory that this movie takes place in the same universe as the Alien movie.

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

I get that, but - couldn't be helped. I don't blame Tyler for quoting it, or Natalie for laughing. It is a great scene. I know several shows \ films reference it &\or lampoon it... initially that's what i thought was occurring.

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

THIS edition _gigantically_ improved the horrible stunt double in that scene! This wasn't bad at all. That was the only flaw i caught in the theatre when it came out. He trimmed it very well in this one. (Also trimmed the wobbly unicorn horn some version{s} had.)

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

I saw the original theatrical release in the theatre, more than once.  I know i saw a different version as well, later on.  But i'm not sure i have seen this version before tonight.  The improvements of this version almost the make the others seem like bad films by comparison. When i suggested the time code onscreen, i didn't even think about pausing!   (Also didn't know it would be a nAtmare to accomplish, sorry)   I, for one, trust you completely to use it responsibly, and it beats missing great moments.  If your reactions weren't so entertaining and informative, would we be Patreons?  So please do what seems best to you.  You are the only reactor i follow. The sequel film IS worth a watch.  "Blade Runner Two: Do Androids Dream of Electric Boogaloo" is a joke name i came up with and will always be proud of.  (There was a novel BR II - that's where i came up with that.  It wasn't by PKDick, but by a friend of his; with his widow's blessing.  Not bad, but zero related to the BR2034.)

Darren Withers

One minor correction, (hopefully), I definitely read an interview where Rutger Haugher’s ad lib was explained to be only the last 5 words, “......like tears in the rain.” and was suggested by Haugher to Scott before the actual shot. The rest of the speech was as originally scripted, however those 5 words are just such a perfect metaphor for the scene, their inclusion was genius.

Darren Withers

Hey, Cosmic, in case you miss the my earlier reply to A Vicarious View, here’s the link to the 3 ministories that Villneuve released in the lead up to Bladerunner 2049. “Nowhere to Run: 2048” is probably my favourite as it really beefs up Bautista’s story in 2049. youtu.be/Ffxo_6Cg0Cw

Ron K

I've always heard that theory too. That Scott's idea is that Blade Runner and Alien are in the same universe which is why the androids in both movies are somewhat similar.

Anonymous

Controversial opinion here, but I enjoyed the sequel as much as this one.

Richard Ryan

I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but here's a little something to chew on. They put memories into the replicants, and gave photos to support the memories. Leon had photos, Rachel had photos, Deckard had photos. Deckard was given info so that he could tell Rachel about things she'd never told anyone... and Gaff knew things that let him know to make a Unicorn. How did Gaff know to make a unicorn? Because Deckard is a Replicant!!

Anonymous

I saw this movie the year it came out when I was twelve. I think it is a real classic, but obviously not for everyone. Points to make - I didn't like the idea for years, but Deckard is obviously a replicant. The biggest clue is the retinal glow that Scott puts in all the replicants eyes. Deckard has it in his scene with Rachel in his apartment. No other 'human' has it. And anyway Ridley Scott confirmed the theory like two years ago. 2. This is the same universe as Alien, at least in Ridley Scott's movies. Weyland-Yutani and the Tyrell Corporation are both shown in a really poor light. I imagine Ridley Scott is not a huge fan of corporatism.

Andy Crawley

Real quick comment, as I’ve just started watching the reaction, but you should definitely watch Blade Runner 2049, it’s a worthy sequel I think. I know a lot of people didn’t like it for some weird reason, but I thought it added a lot to the whole Blade runner world. Plus it was directed by Denis Villeneuve, who directed Prisoners (an amazing film but hard to watch), Arrival, Sicario, and Dune which is coming out later this year. Definitely a director you should do a deep dive on if you haven’t watched any of those!

Ortizmo2000

I personally was pleasantly surprised by how faithful it was to the first film. You could definitely feel the "Ridley-ness" in the production style, cinematography, and most of all the music. I think by this point I've watched 2049 more than its predecessor.

PaulChristopher

Try reading the original book, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick.

Donald

I don't think anyone could blame you for going on about the lighting and the set design, at least I won't since it's all great. I personally have always been on the side of this movie being fantastic. Is it absolutely perfect? No but I do think it's wonderful and forces you to question a lot, such as what makes you human. Would love to see you react to Blade Runner 2049 now to follow this up. After I watch a movie for the first time I love looking up little fun facts about them which Blade Runner has it's fair share. It's often considered "cursed" since most of the companies featured in the movie ended up falling on tough times to some degree after it came out, even briefly. Also the fact that the movie was a failure when it first released, audiences back in 1982 obviously had much different tastes. Then of course there are the more popular ones like how the scene where Pris runs and puts her arm through the van window is a blooper. She actually slipped and busted her elbow up really bad but she carried on with the scene and they used it. And of course the fact that Rutger Hauer (Roy) improvised the line “All those moments will be lost in time… like tears in rain.” in his final speech.

Ellis Hugh

My vote for next series - WandaVision, then Stranger Things, then The Witcher. My vote for next 'off brand' movie - Gone Girl!
