Happy Feature Friday Nat. Looking forward to watching this one. I've not seen it before so I don't know what I'm in for 😬😊 This was a fun ride for sure. So many crazy scenes. James Wan has made many creepy movies since this, his debut. And I had no idea that Adam was played by the co-writer Leigh Whannell who went on to write and direct some great movies too, including The Invisible Man, and next year's The Wolfman. You should definitely check those out Nat 😊 Really enjoyed your reaction today. We got a few shrieks out of you Nat, but more laughs. Thanks for all your great work this week. Look forward to your livestreams this evening. Going to be a scary time ha ha 😊

Danishprince

I know many will say to watch the entire series and while I like many of them, none of the sequels really add anything major other than more gore and twists that becomes more and more far-fetched so sticking with this one is totally fine imo

LittleGalaxyBoy

Not my favourite take on the Riddler.

Mike Hell

This month is the 20th anniversary of this film so good timing, Nat! I remember renting it on DVD back then and being so enthralled with the concept, it was very new at the time. Also, I'll say this film is not bad, but the rest of the films are pretty terrible. Films 2 and 3 are okay, but I don't think you need to subject yourself to anymore of these films after this one.

N

Fun fact, I saw this in theater with a friend, so we decided to prank said friends cousin by planting the same tape recorder in their car when we took them to see the movie for the first time. Long story short, the plan worked & it was hilarious how spooked he was about it

Thats MR. Baldamort

Blood porn is what this is. A movie with one of the most insane twists in all of cinema in my opinion.

jamie jones

In addition to poll winners, would like to see some executive decision movies for natmares. A lot of the best horrors get skipped over in favour of the more commercially successful mainstream films in the polls. Many literally say in the comments they voted for the only film they heard of.

Diiirk706

Fucking H A T E this ''franchise''....ABSOLUTE Donkey Shit....sigh.

Opti_Frog

Yeah, a completely mediocre, over-stylised, over-edited and poorly acted piece of non-horror with an absolutely killer reveal in the final moments.

Peter Yocum

I don't have Peacock, can anyone share if this is the theatrical or unrated version (or just give the runtime)? The one on amazon is 1hr 38 minutes, but IMDB says the movie is 1hr 43 minutes... now I don't know what to think.

Darryl Low

Check Netflix as well, as it is on there if you are in the UK. The runtime was around 1hr 43mn

Joel

Love this series for what it is, a really fun original film with a great twist that is followed by increasingly silly and extravagant sequels. Part of the reason this is edited so strangely is they literally ran out of money and had to piece together the plot using newspaper clippings and still photos. They couldn't even afford to close down a road for the car chase so they shot it in a fog filled soundstage haha. I know you're doing Fast and Furious right now but the Saw sequels would also be a fun "so bad it's good" reaction series.

Wade Wallenstein

I definitely heard of this back in 2004 but never watched any of them until a few years ago. I do agree that it's been an over hyped Franchise since the plot gets very convoluted with later films. I did enjoy how they set everything up in this one and the reveal at the end is great.

samuel Jakob

I really dont understand Horror as a genre, its just way to broad. This for example, imo, is no horror at all, its a crime-thriller, mystery film for me. Anyway this is great one.

samuel Jakob

Well I guess but thats something a lot of crime movies have as well, and some a lot worse than saw, and they arent put into the horror genre, most thrillers in general have really horrific things, thats why I am saying I dont understand what is concidered horror and what isnt when it comes to a lot of horror movies.

Heather Petrullo

I need to suggest the movie Wrong Turn it’s such a good scary and creepy movie for October!

Keith Jacobsen

IIRC the red lights on older, pre-cell phone hotel/motel phones was an indicator light that the front desk has a message or maybe package for you.

Simon Bauer

remember the jaw dropping reveal at the end in theaters, SO good

Jeff Clark

Man so long since I watched this, easy to forget how epic that last couple of minutes are after Adam finds Zeps tape.

Jeff Clark

Whether a movie is horror depends entirely on what scares you individually. Some people are genuinely terrified watching these movies because they fear this kind of thing happening so much.

Modders

Saw X probably is this the only one that can come close to this one the rest are meh.

djKENTO

Fun fact… James Wan who directed this film also directed Furious 7 and boy oh boy does he have fun with that spinning camera, but in a fight scene it can go SO HARD. Also now is the time I request Malignant, his recent horror film that has INSANE camera work.

Daniel McGuinness

Natalie immediately rolling her eyes at “he’s never killed anybody, he just makes them kill themselves” is so funny 😭

SoaringTurtle

I know you have been watching some movies from Peacock lately, but is there any chance you can watch movies on the international streaming sites if they are available? Peacock seems to be US only, and sometimes its hard to sync up

Kraackin

not watching this. Not horror. its a thriller. Do insidious or something actually scary

Cory Silver

To answer a random question you asked. Old landline phones would have that red light on them, that would flash when you had a massage. https://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=1027.0

Daniel McGuinness

I’d say Adam reaching out to Jigsaw in terror as he slams the door, leaving Adam alone and in darkness as he screams into the credits is a pretty horrifying visual lol

Daniel McGuinness

The difference between horror and a thriller is the intention. Thrillers are mysteries with alluring plots designed to get your heart racing. A horror movie is designed to help you either convey, confront, or experience difficult or scary ideas through a cathartic experience of fear. If that makes sense Like the plot of this movie is not “Who is Jigsaw”, it’s why are these people here. What choices did they make that could have landed them here, and what choices have I made that could land me in my own personal test of will Like would you put this and Eyes Wide Shut in the same category? In my opinion

Daniel McGuinness

I maintain that Saw 1-3 is an ~okay~ horror trilogy 😅 wraps up most plotholes decent enough, and it gets rough but it’s before it goes WAY over with the gore lol It’s also worth mentioning that this was an extremely low budget production, James Wan and Leigh Whannell (who plays Adam in the movie) had been pitching the idea for years about a horror movie that takes place entirely in one room (they extrapolate a little here, but they actually made a short film before this that does, with Leigh Whannell in the Reverse-Bear-Trap trap). For example, the crazy editing during Tapp and Zep’s car chase, with the head-on shots and quick cuts is because they literally just filmed the two actors sitting in cars, in front of a black screen, not moving, while the crew waved lights and blew smoke on them…. that’s cinema baby!!!

Erin Olson

The Hills have eyes is pretty intense and doubles as an action flick.

Daniel McGuinness

Also bums me out how people are saying this isn’t a Horror movie. I’ve talked before in the past about how Horror as a genre is the broadest of them all, which is why there’s so many subgenres. It’s about more than just “BOO! SCARY!” loud music jumpscares every 5 minutes… and I love a jumpscare! It’s about the literal definition of “Horror”, a sense of fear, disgust or shock Granted the Saw franchise isn’t the highest example of Horror, but it’s impressive for its time, gave us James Wan and Leigh Whannell, and kind of changed mainstream horror for a good 8/9 years with the introduction of torture-porn era, even though most of the violence in this movie is either implied or off-camera. You can call it a horror/thriller if you want, but don’t disrespect the people involved by outright dismissing it from the genre because it doesn’t give you the heebie-jeebies as much as the loud-ass violin string jumpscares in Insidious 😵‍💫 (which I love, and is made by the SAME DUDE) A lot of you do not know ball, I am sorry to say.

Annie519

So a few things to keep in mind, this film was working under a really small budget, that is why there is so many quick cuts and fast editing, same thing with the limited locations and actors. I'm pretty sure Leah Whannell, the writer and actor who played Adam financed it himself, along with James Wan. In fact, to get the film off the ground they made a short film that was pretty much just the scene with the reverse fly trap but Leah Whannell was the one wearing it. I think the film turned out very good despite their limited means and what they had to work with. It always makes me happy when a small budget movie becomes successful. And the ending is still one of my favorites. Leah Whannell may have not been the best actor but his reaction to seeing who the real jigsaw is was perfect, it was like he was staring at a ghost. And I don't think you even recognized him but Dr. Gordon was played by Cary Elwes aka Wesley for Princess Bride.

Blake Gorf

"The Dictionary of Film Studies defines the horror film as representing "disturbing and dark subject matter, seeking to elicit responses of fear, terror, disgust, shock, suspense, and, of course, horror from their viewers."" It firmly falls under the horror genre, even by traditional definitions. Even the definition of the word "horror" is not only limited to being "scary". Horror is "an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust."

Blake Gorf

Keep in mind horror is not limited to only eliciting 'fear'. Even then, what causes fear is subjective viewer to viewer. Plenty of people fear the traps and gore (more so in later films) .

Blake Gorf

I can see why people could consider it overhyped, but I think the problem is more that people don't understand the hype is about. I'd argue that most Saw fans love the movies for the plot, as convoluted as it gets. It's like a soap opera. It definitely becomes nonsensical at times but we still love it because of the drama and twists. Heck, people have considered the series continuity-porn because of its wild retcons and explanations. I've seen the last few in theaters and what got my butt in those seats was the anticipation of another possible end-of-movie-twist. The traps are cool I guess but I'm there for the ridiculous lore and plot.

Kraackin

its not scary but your acting like its scary

Logan Kerlee

Had a lot of fun watching this with you. Yes, it's disgusting, gross and terrible. That's something that you just need to accept before you press play. The horror in this movie is disgusting but it's a horror film so it's to be expected. After glancing at the comments for a brief moment that wasn't obvious to many. I don't understand how this movie won the poll with everyone being so clueless. xD No matter though, it's been watched and enjoyed (by me at least :P) so that means we can all be happy and move along. If Saw 2 doesn't win a poll then we won't need to return to this type of horror. Personally though, I enjoyed the watch. It was fun seeing Natalie squirm and be disgusted. :P

Logan Kerlee

This is a certain type of horror. The variety that pushed the envelope and makes people go "Yuuuuuuuuck!" While also being terrifying at the same time. What surprises me is that this is the director's first dive into horror! This was his first go at it. I'd say that he did one hell of a job! I remember being SCARED to watch this back when it came out. Granted, I was only 16 at the time - but still, whoa! lmao, I have a buddy who really enjoyed horror films and watching me get freaked out brought him pleasure. xD hahaha, yeah. This isn't classic horror. This is more gross the audience out while also being terrifying at the same time. Not SCARY but still terrifying. Like, this isn't the sort of horror that you get nightmares of, or at least I never did. No, I was just mega uncomfortable to watch this one.

Logan Kerlee

Right, yeah. I never super enjoyed the sequels to this. II"d be happy if we stopped here. More isn't super necessary unless you're super curious about the man behind it all, of course.

Yusuf

She finds it scary. So what? Just because you don't find something scary does not mean other won't.

Billy B

Great movie imo. Original ideas in the film. As always, your reactions are great to watch along with. Hope all is well . Looking forward to the next. Stay golden . 🙃

Joovain

Is there going to be Deadpool and Wolverine reaction?

Razor Bikini

Malignant would be great, I think Nat would have a lot of fun with that one. Can’t wait for Furious 7.

Razor Bikini

More James Wan films please. And when it comes out I’d love to see a reaction to The Substance. Brilliant body horror movie that I think would be a lot of fun on the channel.

Kraackin

Its not nightmare worthy at all. Do a poll for thrillers. Its not scary.

Crispin

bruh this shit shook me too the core my first watch.

Blake Gorf

Some people find tiny harmless spiders scary, and others just see them as annoying pests. We're all different...

Ullrich Pfeiffer

Saw was so fun back in the day. It's not great, but it's a great movie in general.
