Original Movie: Godzilla Minus One

Darryl Low

Happy Feature Friday Nat. Been waiting to watch this movie with you, and so excited that it's finally time 😊 These people that don't switch off their phone in the movie theatre Nat! 😂 haha. This was a really enjoyable movie. It's a lot closer in tone to the original 50s Japanese film than the recent Hollywood versions. The Godzilla theme is from the 50s movie, and you also heard it recently in Ready Player One when the bad guy was in the giant Mecha Godzilla suit. So many great characters in this movie, great drama and just the right amount of humour. An awesome movie. Thanks for a really great reaction today Nat. Have a brilliant weekend 💛

Yyyeeessss can't wait to get off work now

Go Go Godzilla!

Just a heads up for folks watching it on Netflix, the "English [CC]" and "English" subtitles are different, "English" is translated from the Japanese audio, while the "English [CC]" are based on the English dub. The "English" subtitles are definitely better, the dub and it's subtitle track make some changes which weaken the dialogue somewhat :(

Ben Violette

I watched this just the other day and was literally going to ask in your last Twitch stream if you had reacted or planned to lol. Can't wait to rewatch this with your commentary

“You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is, 'never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well-known is this: 'Nattie should never watch movies without tissues! '”

Oh nice, becareful with the YouTube drop of this tho....they been going hard after reactors for this one,.japan dont play

Yes!!! I' so excited! 😃

djKENTO

Would love to see what you think of Shin Godzilla.

Daniel McGuinness

Anime mentioned! Obligatory Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood suggestion!

Daniel McGuinness

Just realising all the dead fish look weird probably because they exploded out from decompression on the way up omg

Erik Stevenson

Great reaction to a great movie! Also, fully supportive of you doing a Ghibli reaction even if it's exclusive to Patreon folks, there are a lot of truly great Ghibli films.

Darren P

Yeah ik it was a STRUGGLE for mary cherry to get it on YT. I'd honestly consider just making it a patreon exclusive just to be safe?

Brian

Great reaction! I loved your countdown timer to make it like Netflix. I've seen probably 1/3rd of Godzilla movies, the most important ones. My current top 3: Minus One -> Godzilla (1954) -> Shin Godzilla. I love Mothra and stuff too, but if I had to go top three, these are it for me.

Daniel McGuinness

Full disclosure, the first time I’d ever heard the “Godzilla Theme” was the start of the Pharoahe Monch song ‘Simon Says’ featured in the iconic piece of cinema Charlie’s Angels (2000) 😅✊🏻 no idea it originated from Godzilla Imagine my surprise watching this and getting ready for Godzilla to shuffle like Sam Rockwell when the beat drops 😮‍💨

Darren P

after years of the american style "big monkey vs lizard" movies, this made me realize how godzilla started as a metaphor for nuclear weapons. seems obvious but i never put two and two together lol. love that minus one brought the character back to its roots!

Lukas Weimar

YOOOOOOO a Ghibli reaction would be AAAWWWWEEEESSOMMEE, would love to see that

Thomas Wetherell

This is a damn good Godzilla movie. I know it’s not something most people probably think about when watching it and that’s fine, but I was really impressed and fascinated by the way the story tied Shikishima and Tachibana’s character arcs into a wider commentary on Imperial Japanese culture, especially during World War II. Anyone who knows anything about Japan during WWII knows that their government and even culture didn’t place much value on human life, even of their own citizens, given the atrocities that were committed and things like kamikaze attacks among others. Both Shikishima and Tachibana have great character arcs even without the wider commentary, but for Tachibana to put aside his anger and tell Shikishima to live and for Shikishima to let go of the notion that he has to die to make up for his inaction at the beginning I thought made it even more impactful given the culture they had come from.

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

I think Nat was watching with the closed captions for the dub instead of the subtitles which is disappointing but it didn't seem to hinder enjoyment so that’s all that matters

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

Would love to see you check out the original 1954 film and/or Shin Godzilla sometime

LionBro

Are you going to watch Ocean's 12?

Tom Chan

I believe the director also did the CGI for the movie. Saves on the outsourcing of it through several different studios

Slick447

I wonder if we're going to see more of a shift in that direction going forward in film. So many big blockbusters use more and more CGI, so it stands to reason a Director with experience in the CGI field would be able to better direct the movie as a whole.

Jock

Something I've noticed is that when characters speak a language that you don't speak, you talk more. I don't mind it at all, just something I've been noticing

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

I mean think about that for a second, if it’s a language she speaks she’s gonna rely on her ears more, and if it’s not all she really needs to do is read the subtitles which allows her to be able to speak more

Em McG

Woo!, loved it! I'll say why I believe it's called "Minus One" - you know when there's a bunch of movies in a franchise like Rocky 7, Rocky 37... and then one day they think to themselves, hmm.. what if we want to make a movie when Rocky first started when he was young? Well... we'll have to call it Rocky Zero. There are many example of anime like this for example "Fate/Zero" and other examples. For Godzilla, it's been 70 years(?) and the original movie in black & white sort-of feels like Godzilla Zero... and so what could they do to go beyond Zero? "Minus One" - this is just my interpretation the second that I saw the title of "Godzilla Minus One." It does fit as being set before the original movie though, so far back it's beyond zero.

Em McG

Nat, we'll go ahead and fight this giant lizard, this leviathan. You stay and we leave the future to you. Walking away stoically without looking back.

Em McG

Upon reading, add dramatic pauses and maybe leave out some words as necessary.

Em McG

Hey I noticed this! I didn't do anything so my version of Netflix defaulted to regular subtitles which were the same I felt as in the theater. The bad thing about [CC] is that they explain the music such as "Foreboding music" and other sound effects like "Door creaking" because it's supposed to be close captioned.

Em McG

"Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line." lol -Wallace Shawn

Em McG

This is the other side of the Oppenheimer movie. In that movie they hint at destruction and human desolation... But on the other side, here in Godzilla Minus One we see the awe and majesty of the monster looming high above, the allegory of nuclear devastation. While a small man falls on his knees clawing at the very air in utter helplessness and perhaps rage. Then black rain falls on everyone. Nat, show this movie Minus One to your friends or others and the 2nd time you will be even more emotional as each moment hits that much harder because you know how it fits to the whole.

Em McG

To contrast, In a Hollywood type movie, they believe in the one hero saves the day. In this other world, this alternate land with a different culture they believe in a village coming together. It begins with the counteroffensive plan against the monster led by citizens. The scientist "Doc" hatches a plan but asks the whole village to help out. Sailors have to man two battle ships. The inflatables guys asks to come along in case they're needed, they've seen war too. "The Kid" later shows up with many tug boats to rescue the plan gone awry. Even Shikishima has to enlist the help of the mentor mechanic Tachibana. On that last run as Shikishima flies into the maw of the maelstrom he carries the will of all the Oda men who perished. It is all this combined will of the village that strikes down the beast. (But also for the Hollywood type viewer they can say "it was the one guy" did it all.)

Ulrich Unterbrunner

Loved the reaction. Especially the moment, when it was revealed that the photos of the mechanics were from their families and she went "I feel like such an asshole now". Great! Gave me a laugh I should not have had after my microlaryngoscopy yesterday (I am recommended to not use my vocal cords for some days, which leads annoying charades with my family). There actually was a lot detail in this movie, that often gets overlooked. Especially regarding Godzillas behaviour and how the different pieces were put together. Most reactors seem to overlook it, which is totally reasonable, since they have to give their reactions while watching to give us a fun time. A few things that were misinterpreted or passed over: -) Shikishima suffered from massive survivors guilt, because every time his life seems to get back on track, Godzilla shows up, kills a ton with him present, and yet he gets out of it almost unscathed. It is basically the opposite of plot armour. He is loaded with guilt armour and the movie adds more and more to it. -) Furthermore he might have been able to kill it pre-mutation on Odo-Island adding to his guilt. Godzilla is a well known legend. Basically Japans Loch Ness monster. -) Whenever Godzilla is upright in the ocean you can see his massive legs treading water. Awesome detail. -) Shikishima kept Godzilla distracted, while the ships were wrapping the cable around its body -) Godzilla fought with all it could to prevent being dragged back to the surface, because it started to suffer massive barotrauma (seen in the milky eyes) and its bloated body shedding the scales, when it got up. It was close to death, which is also why it could not heal after the fighter detonated in its mouth. -) The tugboats had ample time to connect the cable. It takes basically weeks for humans, and surely many hours for Godzilla to adapt to decompression from that depth. The only issue I had was how the Shinden was still flying with its main tank removed for a bomb. I am curious if they explore Norikos ability to heal, which she probably got by being infused with Godzillas cells, when hit by the shockwave and try to create a counter agent to Godzillas regenerative abilities. Regarding the budget. Filming conditions in Japan are BRUTAL. There is no union for actors, writers and such. So production costs are low in general (about 25% of traditional western cost), as people working in the industry are rather underpaid, while stars don't get salaries that go anywhere near what stars get paid in the US for example.

Jock

I 100% understand why, it's just interesting that one can anticipate that it's gonna be more commentary if the movie is in a language that she doesn't understand

rayman

I figured out you watched the English CC subtitles which have different subs than the regular English for some reason, the translations are really awkward in the CC version and not what was used in the theatrical version.

Marcus Powell

I grew up on the Toho Godzilla so it really warms my heart that you got hooked on the theme music so easily. I didn’t think I’d like this film much but I was very impressed. If you haven’t watched the recent Godzilla and Kong movies yet I think you’ll have some fun with them as well.
