Yeah, to add to what some others have said, John saying "fuck it. We live and we die" before trying to take his life in protest was him letting go of the dream of dying an old man in England still holding Mariko's rosary surrounded by grandchildren. The historical figure that John is based on never went back to England and was buried in Japan.

Also, there were two really beautiful callbacks in this episode that I loved: first, "Why tell a dead man the future?" is what Yabushige said to his nephew regarding informing Torunaga about John's ship, so that let's Yabushige know that Torunaga has ALWAYS been in the loop on his double dealing shenanigans. Second, "Let your hands be the last to hold her" shows how much Mariko saying almost exactly the same thing meant to Fujisama when her child was about to die. Such great writing.
