Hey folks!

What an epic movie for a Thursday! So excited I finally got to see this. It DID NOT disappoint. For those who'd like to watch this along with me, I watched it on Prime Video.

FYI, I am insanely behind on work this week so was unable to include an edited intro/outro for this one. This will be the case for tomorrow's movie reaction as well. April has been a rough month and I feel like I've been working overtime just to try to keep up so apologies if you look forward to the intros and outros. I'm hoping May will be significantly easier 😅

As always, thank you for your support here on Patreon! Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

Happy Thursday Nat. You should have been wearing your "Desert Trips" tee for this reaction 😄 I'm going to wait for your YT edit for this one. I saw the movie a couple of weeks back, and I know I'll be in the minority with this opinion, but I have to say that I found it a little "meh" I actually think Part 1 is a much more interesting movie. I don't know if it was the performances, but I just couldn't get invested in the characters' journeys in this movie, so ultimately I really didn't care about the outcome. For all it's flaws in telling the story, and there are a lot of flaws, for me David Lynch's 1984 version of the movie is more interesting. The music, costume and set designs are a lot more inspiring. Anyway, I'm glad that you enjoyed it and who knows, maybe when this is more widely available, I will return to it with your reaction Nat and see if your usual insightfulness can change my mind about it. Looking forward to catching up on your stream tonight 💛

Andy

"Bonus x-ray edition" just means that it has extra content in that x-ray part of the Prime app, the part where it shows actor info, trivia, scene info etc loool

adrianR31

Nothing to say here hasn't been said by everyone. Having read all the books I'll say that the first book should've been a trilogy. There's a lot missing. Still incredible though.

E

THIS MOVIE IS UP THERE WITH RETURN OF THE KING AND EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. This trilogy is absolutely grand just like LOTR and Star Wars, so excited for this reaction and for Dune Messiah 😩 Hopefully more content from this universe comes out, it would be so incredible. For real

Kyle

Letsss gooo👏🏾

dieselbeast

This film is amazing I hope you'd enjoy it!

Nat, to answer your question about "Bonus X-Ray Edition", Amazon Prime does this thing where when you pause the movie, it will show which actors are currently in the scene you are watching, as well as extra bits of info you can click on. Amazon calls this X-Ray mode. They do this already for all their shows, but I assume they only do it for some new releases, so they can promote it as a special X-Ray Edition.

Juliana Montenegro

Interesting to read your thoughts DJ! I had the opposite thoughts, I really didn’t care for the first one at all but the second one was wayyyy better for me. Although, I still really can’t compare this to LOTR like I’ve seen many others do.

When Paul got his hooks on the sand worms plates and then lifted them it exposed those openings in the sandworms, my assumption is that they're like blowholes in dolphins and whales. The worms don't like getting sand in those openings so it won't go down below the sand allowing them to be ridden on the surface.

iMarks

Also to add to the question how they steer the worms? Its like a horse. You pull on the side you wanna go to.

pedantech

That's right, but I suspect the "Bonus X-Ray Edition" in the title is primarily a marketing tactic to differentiate it from the competitors selling the same video.

larshans

I felt for Chani even more this time around, and Zendaya really sells the emotions so well

pedantech

Nat, things you said don't make sense are explained in the book. There isn't enough time to explain it all in the movies.

Wizkid94

amazon does a thing with its movies called x ray which has like overlays of cool facts and trivia. Is that what they mean?

Daniel Vezina

I absolutely loved everything I saw in this movie, I was sadly disappointed by everything we did not see. No Alia, no Fremen life, no Leto, no weirding ways, no golden path.... Personnaly, even if it's flawed due to budget, the Sci-Fy version is the most faithful adaptation of them all.

Nicholas Sulikowski

"I'm a bad Jew." That's okay, I'm a bad Christian. So bad, I eat many meats on Fridays during Lent, haven't been to church in ages, and am an Atheist now!....Okay, maybe just an Atheist now rather than a bad Christian. (I still occasionally have family make me sit through all those Mass rituals with fancy outfits and sayings not as cool as Lovecraftian ones!)

SilentBobFather

Know how on Prime video you can arrow down to see the cast, trivia, and other stuff. That is X-Ray. so Bonus X-Ray includes that.

Marty McGee

Yeah the flesh underneath the segments is very sensitive. The way they rode in the book was a lot more complicated. I like this version better.

Joey Johansen

Anyone know which link Nat prefers. Like, does she get more from me viewing the youtube video vs the patreon video? is it all moot? I ask because I don't mind either, but if I could choose one that maybe helped her get more iunno juice or whatever in algorithms then why not right? Edit: I tend to use the youtube link so far, for this very reason :)

Patrick Reynolds

Rebecca Ferguson, from Lady Jessica Atreides to Reverend Mother of the Fremen, is excellent from the beginning to the end of Dune One and Two. From her first scene at breakfast, making Paul practice the voice, and as we learn of the dynamic of her position as one of the Sisters of the Bene Gesserit, Ferguson is magnificent. I loved her fear and her defiance of her Gaisu Helen Mohiam, Reverend Mother. She gave a son to Paul's father because she truly loved him. But she also believed in Paul, her son, as the One. Lady Jessica is a beauty and a badass. The women are the real power in the Dune Universe. Magnificent.

Yani Dodge

Man, I haven't seen this one since theatres! The music and cinematography, sound design and lighting! *chef's kiss*

Yani Dodge

Oh, that's a good question. I'm guessing either one, I think just the fact your a patreon is huge. Since the youtube videos are unlisted and on a basically private channel, I'm not sure if she actually gets revenue from views. I think it's just whatever is easy for you to watch :)

Yani Dodge

I think there's some aspects that I compare to Lord of the Rings, such as the scale, the cinematography, and the breadth of lore., and I think it's cool for this generation to have another epic trilogy, especially since I was starting to worry we might not get movies of the caliber anytime soon. But in a lot of ways, it can't really compare. It's very different story too and explores different themes.

Erik Stevenson

I absolutely adore this movie, just fantastic all around.

Berry

Yeah, their nostrils is what Natalie called them :D

Marty McGee

Honestly the only weak spot in my opinion is Christopher Walken as the Emperor. Don't get me wrong. I love Christopher Walken, but the Emperor should be this sinister, terrifying political presence. It just felt like a bit of a caricature in this though. More like the Emperor was channeling Christopher Walken rather than the other way around.

mojo shivers

For me, a lover of really intricate dialogue full of fury and pathos, this is the first movie that's told more visually than verbally to really sell me on the concept of less dialogue is more. Famously the director has said he's not a fan of dialogue and it really shows here, but yet I still feel satisfied I got my money's worth and more from this installment as well as the previously one. The whole project is just done so well from an artistic viewpoint that I don't even notice the lack of words. I think the only other movie to take my breath away like this was Columbus (2017), which is almost like watching people acting against the most arresting landscape paintings. Everything is so spaced so well from a cinematography standpoint that I almost spend the entire movie looking at the gorgeous backgrounds and interesting framing. There, they don't talk a lot either, but they're positively motormouths compared to the people in Dune. lol

Timminson

Subscribing to Patreon does the most. Watching the YouTube link does nothing. It’s an unlisted video that she links just to make things easier for us to watch along. If you want to give her a view then you can watch it when she officially posts it live to her main channel. But ya just subbing to the Patreon is the best thing you can do.

C021B01

The reason the sandworm doesn't burrow into the sand when the Fremen ride it is because the Fremen lift up its scales with the hooks when they‘re riding, exposing its sensitive skin on the air, and in order to prevent the sand from getting into its skin and causing injury, the sandworm stays as far out of the sand as it can act

adrianR31

Amazon x-ray makes it the better streaming UI out of all the rest. Whenever you pause or mouse-over the movie or show, it will tell you exactly who's on screen at that moment and what song is playing. It's a brilliant feature.

2024-05-02 17:00:23 Also this has to be said. You're doing yourself and your fans and Denis a huge disservice by not watching this in IMAX. There are a handful of movies filmed on IMAX cameras that have to be seen on a proper IMAX screen. Anywhere else and you're watching a redacted film. Every single frame, compositionally completely different. It's an entirely different experience. I'd rather we couldn't see your first reaction to this one and you seeing it the way Denis intended. Search 'dune imax' on YT to see exactly what I mean.

I used to just watch it on Patreon, but I've found the YT link to be more stable especially with lower internet speeds. Patreon one tends to buffer which irritates me as now I have to do a guessing game on re-syncing the Patreon vid with whatever streaming service I'm using to watch along.

A true Masterpiece of a movie... one of the most incredible I've ever seen.

X ray is a system that provides you with information as you watch the film like trvia facts, etc.

This movie has gone for a rating that doesn't allow for blood

They control the worm with the hooks, they pull the skin back to expose their nostrils* which prevents them from returning under the sand with people on it.

Theater watch for 2, didn't think it lived up to 1. For me Lynch's version was a 1985 must theater watch, after reading the book inspired by Iron Maiden's To Tame a Land. Love how Lynch visually explained that the tools prying open a scale on a sand worm would naturally cause the worm to rotate the "thorn" to the top and then stay on the surface. Lynch's use of "vocalized thought Narrative" I also thought was awesome. Music by Toto, yup.

Taff Lewis

Love how you call out crew and high-light their vital contributions. Also notice, during the YT that (for obvious reasons) that you the clips are paused for your thoughts. Would be cool if you could, somehow, incorporate this into the Patreon watches. Yes, it would disrupt the flow, but there have been several times that you have "seemingly" missed (despite my shouts at the screen) important plot points (that I know you would pick up on) but for your spontaneous reactions. Of course your personal reactions are the reason I am (we?are) here. Thank you for your work, always appreciated. -Mr. Parenthetical.

The one change I really don’t like is Chani. In the book, there is a great line Jessica says to Chani to comfort her. “Think on it, Chani: the princess will have the name, yet she will live as less than a concubine - never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she’s bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine - history will call us wives.” She’s much more pragmatic in the book and it’s a great callback to the fact that Leto was never married to Jessica either for political reasons but they still had a very deep and loving relationship.
