Did you know there's a new Final Fantasy game out? (No, not Final Fantasy VII Rebirth—but good guess!) This past summer, the latest mainline Final Fantasy released to near-universal critical acclaim, but seemingly not a whole lot of enthusiasm from fans. So is this stunning spectacle in an Ivailce-style world worth the 60 hour (and 70-dollar) investment? On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Will Hughes, and Corey Plante as the crew discusses how this latest entry looks to the future while still being slightly stuck in the past.

This is the first final fantasy my wife played since X she loves it, wants the soundtrack and the art book. Watching the game was quite a spectacle.. and for some reason she just never got that chocobo haha. I'll be excited to play through it right after Y's, octopath and Nier Automata...one of these years

I think the main problem with the game is that its length adds to its depressing nature. In most games, the stuff you do makes the world a better place. In FFXVI, almost everything you do either makes things worse or just temporarily stops it from getting worse. Which I think is fine for a 20 hour game or if it was a weekly show I could take a mental break from. But as a human with feelings and empathy, I just was dreading playing the game at some point, because it was just too much emotionally. And I do think that speaks to the strengths of the story in that I wanted these characters to succeed in their mission, but I also maybe need a minigame or two to get my mind off of the enormity of the situation for a bit. Which, as alluded to on the podcast, is why FFVII Rebirth has been so fun to play!

Thanks y'all, enjoyed an episode on a new entry for an old series you've been covering for years. I am on the "it was good" side of FFXVI.

I really like (most of) FFXVI, but I can't fault this superb, thoughtful analysis. I'm not really good at action games so I may be more forgiving of the limitations of the battle system than some but I found myself nodding with agreement at every comment. As Bob implied, this is almost a reverse FF15- that was a chaotic pile of jank that somehow won me over; this was ultra-polished with the most (comparatively!) coherent FF plot in yonks but sometimes threatened to push me away.
