Diamond Feit here, happy holidays everyone! Here it is listeners, our last community podcast of 2023. It's also our longest (by far) and it's our first to feature not one but TWO guests: regular cohort Stuart Gipp and, for the first time, Retronauts' longtime editor Greg Leahy! We've been thanking Greg in text form for years at the bottom of these posts but this month I wanted to thank him in person. I couldn't do that since he lives in another country, but I could invite him onto the show and he accepted.

Before you press play on this month's bonus show, please prepare yourself for twice the Britishness, graphic tales of Stu killing children, and one simple tip for improving your mental health. Naturally, we end the show with a question for you to answer, but since this is the end of the calendar year, I bet you can guess what the question is without opening the podcast (but please do, it took me many hours to edit this).

I mostly play older games, with the occasional newer release peppered in to keep things fresh. In 2023, I only played one game from that same year, and it was Star Ocean: Second Story R, which is a remake. If that counts, it's my favorite game by default. And I'm happy with that, because it's a great game and an even better remake. My favorite game before 2023, back a whole year, was Elden Ring. Every bit as excellent as its reputation suggests.

Huge thanks again for the shoutout about my writing! It means a lot. My 2023 GOTY is Octopath Traveler II, a refinement of the first in such minor, broad yet key strokes that it turned what seemed like another of Square's modern FF5 throwbacks into what looks to be one of its most promising franchises yet. My non-2023 GOTY would be Portal - only finally got around to it thanks to your episode. Everything I want from a game: a well-excuted concept that only a videogame can offer, the masterful difficulty curve that constantly makes you feel like you're a genius, and most importantly, is 3 hours long. I'm only kind of joking.
