Stuart: Gex!

Now that I’ve got your attention, listen to this podcast about the computer game character “Gex the Gecko”. Thanks.

Look, you all knew this was coming, regardless of whether or not Limited Run were putting the entire trilogy out on contemporary consoles. Thankfully, they are, so I (Stuart Gipp, hullo) have a reasonably decent excuse for getting the Euronauts gang back together for a jolly old chinwag about this much-maligned and morosely-misunderstood series. Together! We will delve into the curious history behind this once again Gexually active franchise, from its 3DO roots to the vast gulf in history between the release of the final game, Deep Cover Gecko (Oxford comma), and its resurrection in the Carbon Engine.

It was quite fulfilling for me personally to experience the enthusiasm my co-hosts had for this series, because me being me I’ve defended these games against slings and arrows for many years now. It’s nice to find out that I’m not alone and that people with Taste and Distinction agree with me that All Gex Are Good. It’s a continuation slash initiation of the reasonably long-running series on 3D platformers that we Euronauts have been exploring recently, so look forward to more fun with jumping.

While it’s not the longest series at only three main games (and some Game Boy Color takes on the same), there’s plenty to say about them and a nice bit of personal anecdotery to go with the development history. Of the PlayStation platformers based on reptiles, Gex is definitely top of the heap. And yes, I will get around to Croc eventually. It’s not a priority of mine. Wait until you find out what is.

Stewart’s reaction to Sega Saturn Gex JP cover really cheered me up after being sick all weekend. Thank you!
