As live-action video game movies began their slow rollout in the early '90s, Mortal Kombat arrived last—but with the hindsight of how its predecessors had failed. And though it lacked the outright gore of its video game source material, this adaptation managed to stay faithful to everything else that made the fighting game series a phenomenon. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert as they chat their way through this martial arts gem of the mid-90s. (We'd say GET OVER HERE but you were thoughtful enough to show up on your own.)

Note: Commentary begins at 00:19, when "New Line Cinema Presents" has fully faded in on the screen.

Should you do the next movie? Yes yes yes!!!

I remember seeing Mortal Kombat in theaters, but it must have been for a friend's birthday because there was no way my parents would have let me see it otherwise. In some ways, I kind of liked that arrangement because it meant getting the thrill of disobeying my folks but in a way devoid of any actual consequences. My friends pulled that same stunt in 2000 when we saw Gladiator in theaters, which I think was my first R rated movie.

Love these movie commentaries, please keep them coming. And yes, techno syndrome still gets me pumped up to this day, almost 30 years later.
