Who’d be a Lemming? If the traps don’t get you, it’ll be the slime, lava or – every Lemming’s worst enemy – gravity. Still, I’d take any of those over having to play 3D Lemmings ever again.

Yes! It’s true!! Stuart Gipp and Dave Bulmer have emerged from the pea soup (Lemmings reference) in order to discuss what’s left of the series following Jeremy Parish and the Retronauts East gang’s retrospective episode and developer interview. For that reason, we don’t focus much on the original Lemmings, but we do take you on a breezy ride through the rest of the franchise up to 2006, whereupon it sadly ended and no more Lemmings games were ever made ever no they weren’t shut up.

We also touch on series spin-offs, associated literature, and of course myriad memories of our personal experiences with the games. Where do the sequels go wrong? Where do they go right? Are there any misconceptions about the series that we clear up? What of the console ports? Who is Willy Poobum? All! Yes, all are covered in this informative and admittedly extremely puerile episode.

I was very surprised to find that there was no mention of the highly lauded DS homebrew port, which features all 120 levels from the original Amiga Lemmings, all 100 levels from Amiga Oh-No! More Lemmings and all 72 levels from Xmas Lemmings '91, '92, '93 and '94, plus automatic progress saves and even the ability to create your own levels and traps right on your DS. I won’t link to the site, but it’s incredibly easy to find via search. Being a homebrew game, you will need a “modified” DS or 3DS, of course—which means that if you do so, everything is A-OK as long as you get rid of the game and the portable after 24 hours.
