Hi, it's Diamond Feit! We've got another patron request episode this week, and like last time, I feel like Allan Berry is really twisting my arm here: A podcast about a movie? Set in New York? Jeez, I'm way out of my wheelhouse here, but for you Allan, I'll stretch my legs.

I kid, I kid. Really, this topic proved to be the perfect excuse to bring back cinephile James Eldred to the podcast, given that he hosts his very own show all about old movies called Cinema Oblivia. I've been a guest multiple times, and we've talked about everything from forgotten star-studded action comedies from the 1970s to the work of Japanese director Takashi Miike.

But that's not all, folks: I also reached out to two more experts, Diana Goodman and Mikel Reparaz, because this week we're not just talking about The Warriors (1979), we're also covering The Warriors (PS2, Xbox, 2005), a video game based on Walter Hill's classic about a small gang trying to survive the night when every other gang in New York City targets them for trouble.

Art by Shaan Khan and edits by Greg Leahy. Music in this episode:

  • 12:12 - Motion Picture: In the City
  • 25:04 - Motion Picture: Theme From "The Warriors"
  • 35:13 - Motion Picture: Into the Tunnel
  • 45:21 - Motion Picture: Nowhere to Run
  • 56:42 - Motion Picture: The Fight

Really great episode. Thoroughly enjoyed it through and through. I’m a bit older than the participants as I DID see The Warriors in theaters. I was 11. It was amazing! I vividly remember my friend and I thinking the Baseball Furies had the best look by far. Of course, per the episode, it makes no sense but hey, I was 11 and they were colorful in the “exotic” location of post apocalyptic New York (aka the real New York of ‘79). We even dressed up as the ‘Furies for Halloween. Man, I gotta find that picture. The original sound track is amazing, certainly. I think a lot of people may even recognize the Warriors theme without knowing it’s source. All of this is through the filter of my youth but, seeing The Warriors, Escape from New York, 48 hrs. and many more, first run, was just so fun. The influence so many of these movies have had over the decades is so ubiquitous. It was fun to have been in a crappy little corner theater in the late 70s/early 80s and experienced them. Keep up the creation of these ‘casts of movies that influenced gaming! I’ve really enjoyed the episodes Retronauts has done on this theme!

Aww damn if I knew this was going to be a thing I could have gotten you in touch with my friend Andrew who worked as a programmer on this game. It was the last game he worked on before he left game development.
