It's been 11 years since the last proper Monkey Island entry, and more than three decades since series creator Ron Gilbert left Guybrush and company in the hands of others. So it goes without saying fans were more than delighted when mid-2022 saw the announcement of Return to Monkey Island, a proper sequel to 1991's Monkey Island 2—and one that somehow doesn't discount all the installments made in between. And now it's here! On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey and Nina Matsumoto as they set sail for yet another Monkey Island journey; but this time, it's to formerly uncharted waters.

I played this after playing another modern point and click game, and Return controls like a dream compared to the previous game, in terms of traversal, inventory, and interface. However the storytelling was unsatisfying and the ending felt like the creators working through their mixed feelings about the legacy of their work, leaving the fans as hapless bystanders.

We've had a bunch of podcasts now about the Monkey Island series, but what exactly is a monkey island? Something I've learned recently when I was sent offshore: "The term “monkey island” refers to a place on the ship which is located at the top most accessible height. Technically, it is a deck located directly above the navigating bridge of the ship. It is also referred to as the flying bridge on top of a pilothouse or chart house, and also as the ship’s upper bridge. Sailors would use this place to perform solar and stellar observations. During the ancient time, when ship used to have masts and sails, the monkey island was also supposed to be located about 3/4th way up the main mast on few ships. There is no solid evidence or proof to back the origin of the term “monkey island”; however, there are a few theories that believed to be the reason behind the usage."
