Lock and load, everyone, we are running and gunning our way through the most explosive series on the NEO GEO (and beyond): Metal Slug. Born from ex-Irem employees who just wanted to blow stuff up, the original 1996 arcade release delivered high-stakes action via the finest animation seen on the platform. Many sequels followed, with the series even enduring the bankruptcy of SNK and the demise of the NEO GEO itself.

Host Diamond Feit is no lone wolf taking on the forces of General Morden, recruiting frequent Retronaut Stuart Gipp and arcade expert Lord BBH to outline the games that preceded Metal Slug, identify key people behind the series (at least, those with known identities), and discuss the ups and downs of all eight mainline entries.

Went and played the first Metal Slug after this pod, and it's unfathomable to me how anyone could get through that game on one token. Maybe an AI could after 14 million repetitions lol

It's Retronauts history! Stuart's terrible take ends up being the correct one: Metal Slug 3 is the worst.
