Happy New Year! Some months ago, I went to Kyoto to the not-so-secret headquarters of Vitei, an independent game studio that will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2022. Vitei was founded by Giles Goddard, a young man from the United Kingdom who came to Japan as a teenager to work for Nintendo. Can you believe that sentence is a fact? I can't, and I've met this guy!

Giles Goddard and I, along with Chuhai Labs producer Mark Lentz, had a nice chat about how he started programming at an early age, the games he made while at Nintendo (such as 1080 Snowboarding, a game that also features his voice in a starring role), and his company which is actively developing and publishing games this very second. Well, not THIS second, because it's still New Year's break in Japan. But later this week, you know, I'm sure they'll be back at it.

If I sound nervous in this episode, and I do, please understand that this conversation took place early in 2021 before I had become a full-fledged co-host of Retronauts so we weren't sure whether this recording would become its own episode, a Patreon exclusive, or something else. Now it's here, it's real, and I'm proud of it. Enjoy!

Really glad these dev interviews happen. Even if they're not the most action packed episodes, it's great to get the history from the folks who were there.

Loved 1080, rented it a bunch of times back in the day, thanks for the interview!
