Over the past couple of years, we've dedicated several episodes to the legacy of the Mario franchise beyond the main man himself. The vast reach and proliferation of Mario games, combined with its relatively small cast, means their supporting characters have a unique place in video gaming that can't really be compared to those of any other series or franchise.  We've looked at Mario, Toad, Yoshi, and Wario; now we wrap things up with an in-depth look at the legacy of Her Royal Highness, Princess Peach. From victim to leading lady to everything in between, Bob, Nadia, and Kat help me break down the complicated history of the young lady who may just be the single most famous woman in video games.

The artwork Greg did for this episode's cover is seriously awesome. One of my favorite cover pieces you've had. Major kudos, I love all the references.

Great episode, especially the speculation on if the Mushroom Kingdom is an absolute monarchy or some kind of autonomous collective.

I remember the marketing material for Army of Two called out Princess Peach by name for absolutely no reason, the developers said that their new female character Alice was so badass she'd eat Prince Peach for breakfast. Of course Alice was literally just the "woman on the radio" for all of Army of Two, so Peach literally had more agency than Alice ever did.

My prayers go out to Jeremy for being stuck playing Mahjong for an eternity for his videos.

I believe the mushroom kingdom does have a hive-like societal structure, with Peach having different physical characteristics because she is a Queen, though the title princess is used. The Royal Mushroom power-up obtainable by Toadette is similar to the Royal jelly used to turn a queen bee candidate into an actual queen. By becoming Peachette, Toadette could theoretically challenge Peach for control of the hive if it came down to it but using the mushroom as a temporary power-up isn't sufficient to induce permanent change. As to Rosalina I think it is very possible that this is a genus of Toad person above even Princess, with Luma being her equivalent of toads, propagating toadlike creatures throughout the universe, notwithstanding her backstory being a possible reverse time traveling daughter of the Princess Peach we know, who lives through the end of the universe to witness the birth of a new one and herself now continues this cycle. Others have tried to take control of this "technology" themselves, such as Tatanga who kidnapped Daisy and studied her, turning some of his own minions into Daisy clones presumably through some kind of spore exposure. Mind you none of this is explicitly in any of the games or manuals, you have to read between the lines.

I live in Charlotte, NC. Lets do a retronaughts meetup at the Mario set. That could be sweet!

I can't tell if ignoring Luigi in the list of 'most important Mario characters' is a bit or not.

Reposting this from the discord: I don’t think this is the bar Jeremy referred to, but while volunteering at the Cucalorus film festival there I was posted at the Ironclad Brewery. And while there I discovered they had a copy of the Super Mario Bros movie shooting script encased in a glass box (like with handwritten notes and everything). So while everyone was gushing over indie movies I was pressed against the glass box like a starving orphan looking into a bakery in a Dickens novel.

I was curious what your reactions were to the change in Peach's voice between Mario 64 and Melee/Sunshine. I was aghast the first time I heard her speak in Melee. Peach in Mario 64 sounded like an actual adult and this baby voice she's had ever since just grates on my nerves. She seems downright ditzy in Mario Sunshine, barely reacting to what's happening when Bowser Jr reveals himself. I would've LOVED if the Peach from the Mario adventure comics was canon instead of... that.

After SMB2 USA, I haven't played any games that had Princess Peach so I wasn't too familiar with the subject matter. Even so, I enjoyed this episode quite a bit. Nadia, Kat, Jeremy, and Bob were on fire in this episode!
