Around here, 2021 is the year of Actually Finishing Things (including, one hopes, global pandemics). This week we make good on that promise by finally wrapping up the Indiana Jones film/game trilogy Retronauts East started a few years back with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the final film in the saga, as well as its games. Well, you'll notice one big exception here: The only good game based on Last Crusade, the SCUMM-driven Lucasfilm Games adventure, is not here, because that's Bob's turf! We've left that one to him, because he'll do it proper justice.

Ben, Benj, Chris, and myself once again discuss the merits of Nazi-punching and fedoras, as the lack of merits of games based upon such things. For reference, our last discussion of the Indy films was Temple of Doom waaaay back in episode 251 (Oct. 2019), so if you need a refresher, we totally understand.

Art by Amanda Pruitt and edits by Greg Leahy.

Without a doubt my favourite of the trilogy! Can't wait to dig into this one! Cheers, Retrocrew.

I am 36, I love Tomb Raider and I never saw the Indiana Jones movies till recently. It was harder to go back than I thought.

I also got my Indy VHS tapes from McDonald's! They had a big long trailer for Young Indiana Jones Chronicles at the beginning that I now feel weird not seeing before those movies. (Similarly, I feel weird not seeing Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck tell me to get a Warner Bros. catalogue before Batman '89.)

I am one of those few who have most Indiana Jones super pulpy novels that came out after Last Crusade. They aren't all good and I'm not sure what counts as "canon," but I like how scholarly Indy tends to be in the books. Most of the novels are during the 1920s when he's getting his PhD and trying to get tenure.

Another great movie podcast! I got to revisit this movie a couple of years ago when a friend screened it outside during the Fourth of July, with his neighborhood shooting off fireworks while we’re watching Last Crusade. I still think it’s a lot of fun and it’s a lot easier to go back to than Temple of Doom, where you’re left unpacking problematic bits and pieces for much of the film. As much as it probably pained the crew, I’m glad you went over the games as I had the Taito NES game when I was a kid and it’s not great, but I always looked at it as a collection of mini games and I appreciated the effort, despite how half-baked it was for the word puzzle, sliding puzzle and holy grail pieces. The brawler parts...not so much. The Tiertex game that wound up on NES in ‘93 is awful though. I still don’t know how UBI thought there was a market out there for another Last Crusade game for consumers who just bought a top loader console. I read the Nintendo Power feature on the game back then and knew to avoid it, only to end up acquiring it to fill a hole in my NES collection. I feel for anyone who paid full price for that, on any platform.

Great episode. Makes me want to rewatch the movie, it's really a special one. I don't know how long has Jeremy kept that "Leftism is good" comment in his chest but it was worth every second. Love the Connery impersonations. Please consider doing an episode on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I've noticed that when I download episodes direct from Patreon it more often than not defaults to using "1.mp3" as the file name. Is this just a problem on my end or are other patrons experiencing it?

I owned Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures on the SNES (fwiw I do remember a review of the Genesis version, it existed, but was cancelled). It's funny to hear about how bad it is because back then, I didn't feel that way at all. I mean, you're right, it wasn't good game design, just rote memorization. But I had memorized it! I knew where traps and enemies would show up, which was often required to be able to dodge them. I had discovered the subtleties of the game such as hitting stuff with the tip of the whip did double damage, which is important when enemies are damage sponges. It looked great and sounded great, which counted for a lot back then. It was also, funnily enough, my first exposure to Raiders, which I saw well after either sequel. It never seemed to air on TV, and my local video clubs never carried it until the mid-90s. It was also the first time I saw any screens of Indiana Jones movies in widescreen.

To this day, I remember the McDonald's ad for the Indiana Jones VHS tapes. They were such good deals!
