In 1990, the innovative brawler River City Ransom was released to some acclaim, but mostly went forgotten until the late '90s emulation boom led to its highly influential Renaissance. And with this newfound attention came the shocking knowledge that River City Ransom belonged to a series known as "Kunio-kun," with most of the games remaining untranslated and stuck in Japan—until 2020. On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Ray Barnholt, and Kurt Kalata as the crew traces the history of Kunio-kun from his rough-and-tumble arcade origins to his Famicom existence as squat extreme sports champion. You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll BARF!

Very nice episode! As a casual fan of the Kunio-Kun series (but not a hardcore one), this was quite informative.

I would guess the decision to make a Kunio basketball game was that Slam Dunk manga was at the height of its popularity, a comic which is said to almost single handedly introduce basketball to Japan. It's lifetime sales are ridiculous, something like close to 160 million, which is in top 10 most popular mangas ever made. Takehiko Inoue even received an award from Japanese basketball association for his major role of advancing the status of the sport in there.

Good point! I'm aware of Slam Dunk but wasn't thinking about the connection in this episode.
