This episode is what passes for a live panel recording in 2020: A recording from the virtual version of this year's Long Island Retro Expo convention. Different energy, same content. Since not everyone could join for our live talk at this summer's online show, I still felt it was important to have this conversation in the archives for future reference—and, of course, to share it with the Retronauts audience, for whom the subject matter should hit close to home.

The Video Game History Foundation has come a long way since Frank Cifaldi, Mike Mika, and Steve Lin first mentioned it on an impromptu episode recorded back in 2017, and this conversation delves into it. Frank and his partner at the VGHF, Kelsey Lewin, explain the importance of their work they're doing, their methodology, the kinds of history they're seeking to preserve, and the challenges that any game historian needs to be mindful of.—Jeremy

woot! Already on VGHF's patreon and I'm an occasional Pink Gorilla customer so cheers to Frank and Kelsey! e: yeah determining provenance of source code is pretty hairy, might come across some licensed middleware like a sound system that found its way into the source tree but now can't be distributed. Jason Scott of Archive.org's attitude is "If anyone cares about some 25 year old code for abandonware, it's on them to complain, publish it!"

yes I am extra-grateful I stopped at Pink Gorilla last summer and clearly I should have spent more time & money there.

As a life long gamer dedicated to its history and culture, I am happy to see an organization such as this. I wish them much success.

Oh! It took me a moment, then recognizing her voice, I realized which Kelsey was speaking. Great choice of guest, great episode! Also I checked out a couple of the Pink Gorilla stores when I visited Seattle about a year ago, grabbed a Wii U and PS4 title I needed!

Great episode! It's crazy to think that the video game history foundation could exist in 100 years. Imagine the potential! Great insight here as to what people are doing for this incredible part of culture we are all a part of. Also! It was really cool hearing Jeremy talk about what happened with 1up. I'm interested in the alternate timeline where they could have been more receptive.
