Episode 58 of the new numbering, that is. According to archive.org, episode 58 of the original run was... Half-Life!? Well, that was a near-miss with wild coincidence.

This episode 58 is not about Half-Life but rather about HAL. When we learned of Satoru Iwata's passing in the middle of recording our recent PlayStation episode, we vowed to give his work with HAL a proper tribute. Hopefully this session fits the bill. Regular irregulars Christian Nutt and Henry Gilbert join us for the conversation.

What a random digression you took with that Gal Force bit. I got the Super Deformed double feature VHS at a comic shop in portland Maine in 2012 for two bucks because I was collecting OVAs and it seemed cool (the tape was blue, heh) then last year I met an otaku who offered me 60$ for it. I obliged. I should add that I am 23 years old. Even I feel old now. Even though I'm not. I've been through a lot. I gew up with the N64 and gameboy pocket but started collecting retro games in first grade when I bought my friends SNES for 20$. On the subject of "modern nintendo fans" and their super smash headcanons: I really hate it. Last year I was living with e-sports super smash tourney-goers and it gets frustrating that there are people who come to love these characters for their smash brothers canon rather than the games they starred in. Samus seems like a shadow when there hasn't been a Metroid game for this generation. Who the hell is shulk and why is he in my smash brothers? Kirby came out the year I was born but I got both gameboy titles and played them a ton, Kirby's Dream Land 2 will always be my favorite. Another fact that the general populace doesn't see is that Mother 1 clearly became the prototype for pokemon. I think Sakurai is full of himself though. He made kirby at age 18, that's cool, but I give everyone else credit for the genius of SSB. Melee was a perfect game mostly because they had to outdo the Xbox and Ps2 that generation, and they did it with pure gameplay perfection. Anyways, thanks for this awesome episode. PS hi jeremy its me, olias, did you miss me ?

Also it is ALWAYS frustrating to hear anybody talk about the divide between melee players and modern smash games.. "The scene" is definitely full of annoying bros. and like all fighting games there are frame counters. I see Melee as having a lot more heart put into it whereas today's smash is less about precise programming fun and more about gimmicky characters and content, and that makes it more of a cash grab. It was also closer to what most would say was a better era for Nintendo. Last month I watched the footage on youtube of the E3 reveal for melee, where they played the opening movie. I cried!! What a pure time. I'm sure you understand pretty well what it was like back then to be surprised and moved by games compared to nowadays when secrets are leaked immediately. I'm sorry for rambling guys! But you know how it is. I'm a passionate person.

I can't listen to the podcast it stops at one point and starts playing from the beginning again. It also says "live stream " on the bottom corner as it plays, I don't recall this happening before.

I'm surprised you guys didn't like KI: Uprising. That's like a top 5 of all time game for me.

I'm having the same issue as Hector. Can't play it through the app either.

I subscribe to other Patreons, and I have the same problem you folks are having: Trying to listen to a Patreon-hosted podcast via my iPhone often makes said podcast into a "Live Broadcast" that restarts after like 30 seconds. I'm not sure if this is a problem on Apple or Patreon's end, but rest assured you aren't alone. These days I either use the official Patreon app or download these podcasts to a PC or laptop. Hopefully they'll fix this issue soon! - Bob

Nintendo sure loves their legendary designers, huh? Geez...they're like the '95 Chicago Bulls of gaming. Great ep. I always like you guys' special guests too. We need a behind the scenes micro or something.
