We're going back to the Back to the Future trilogy for a podcast discussion about what could be the most interesting sequel of all time! When Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale put together the original Back to the Future in 1985, they had no idea they would have such a massive hit on their hands—or that their joke ending would set the second movie's plot in stone. But by working against adversity, the two crafted a highly satisfying sequel that doubled down on time travel antics, and even added alternate universes into the mix. (And might have even predicted the future with 1985-A...) On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Henry Gilbert, and Dave Rudden as the crew talks so much about Back to the Future Part II they have to save the game discussion for the next episode. So listen now—unless you're chicken!

One of the great sequels and probably my favourite time travel film, in terms of the mechanics. Remember chatting with friends and trying to puzzle out how Marty was going to get from the 50s to the Old West, since the DeLorean had been catapulted back to the Old West with Doc. The reveal was very satisfying. Love the third one too. Especially the way Marty and Doc effectively swap roles.

The beautiful thing about the almanac from Biff's perspective, is if the things he did changed the results of those sports games or races, it would be reflected in the almanac pretty much immediately! So he could always make the right bet. Like the "Doc Brown Committed" changing to "Doc Brown Commended"

One of the best movie series in history. Likable characters, awesome music, great settings...I don't know anyone in my friends or family circles that DOESN'T like the Back to the Future movies! I have no personal history with any Back to the Future games however. I need to add them to my list of games to try out.

I am genuinely embarrassed that I didn’t realize this when I brought up the point. I guess I wasn’t thinking fourth dimensionally!

I swear that 'Super Back To The Future 2' music used in the first break just has that noise Helper won't stop making in Venture Bros.

Haven't listened to this one yet but I hope Bob mentions seeing the trilogy (plus Used Cars which I don't think they stayed for) at the Castro Theatre a few years back! I recognized his voice and other Retronauts people (don't know if Henry was there) and approached them in the lobby. Slightly OT but the original BTTF novelization has a bit with Marty escaping detention in the beginning that would be a perfect Willy Beamish-esque adventure game puzzle.

This was the second movie I remember seeing in theaters (first was Roger Rabbit) as a 6 year old. I had seen the ABC broadcast of the first movie shortly before and it was immediately the greatest thing I had seen in my short life. Right after seeing Part II I got Part I on VHS and had convinced myself that it was leading directly into Part II and both movies were one big long cut on one tape due to the end scene of BTTF 1 being the opening of 2. The Jennifer switch went right over my head...

I look forward to the discussion of part 3, which is by far the best movie in that trilogy

Saw this for a kid Scott's birthday on a Saturday morning, and we all got up in front of class for show and tell that week to talk about the movie and hoverboards.

The choice of 'Wild Gunman' for the game in the 80s Cafe is more significant than Henry makes it sound in this episode's wrap up. It's another bit of foreshadowing for the Old West setting for the 3rd film, and it provides the explanation for Marty's sharpshooter skill in part III.

Bob Mackey

I thought I pointed out that they did a CGI mockup of Wild Gunman with several opponents on the screen so they could do a gag later where Marty hits a bunch of targets in an Old West shooting gallery. But that might have been the first cowboy games episode.

I always appreciate the way you guys talk sociopolitical without breaking from the topic. It's a really difficult line to walk, and you never fail to keep things smooth when discussing the real-life relevance in media.

Loved this pod but...no mention of VistaGlide?

I don't know if anyone knows about this but there is a reference to the scene in BttF Part II where Marty is cornered by Biff only to be saved by the time car once he jumps off the ledge. And, in Megaman Legends, Megaman is cornered by a giant reaverbot and then jumps off the ledge only to be saved by the Flutter.
