Yes, we've talked about the original Castlevania before, but the last time was as part of a general survey back in the Kickstarter era, which was—brace for it—seven years ago. It's almost retro itself at this point.

I was motivated to create this episode once I learned that I'll be involved (to some small degree) with the Castlevania collection release at my day job, Limited Run Games... though we recorded this show before that had been announced or even 100% confirmed, so you won't hear it mentioned here. But between that project and my new boss' generous "welcome to the gig" gift of a copy of Akumajou Dracula for MSX (which then inspired me to hunt down an actual MSX to play it on), I've had Castlevania on the mind a lot lately. Naturally, the thing to do was to pull together a few of the biggest fans I know and give the groundbreaking NES game a proper shakedown, along with in-depth looks at the various alternate versions and remakes Konami has created for it through the years. In addition to the original Castlevania, we also talk the MSX game, Super Castlevania IV for Super NES, the dire Haunted Castle, and the excellent X86000 game (and its remix on PlayStation).

The lovely cover art comes courtesy of Greg Melo! Edits, as always, by Greg Leahy.

I feel like a Castlevania episode is the triple tech of Jeremy, Shane and Nadia.

Rasheen Jordan

And I just finished another run of SOTN yesterday.

I love having the bonus on Fri and getting a new one on Monday. Awesome

I played 1, 2, & 3 on NES, skipped 4 on SNES, played all 3 games for DS, then went back to experience SOTN. I just finished Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, really enjoyed it. The only game I feel I really need to go back to is Aria of Sorrow, just because I loved Dawn of Sorrow so much. Any arguments for the other GBA titles?

Casey Jones

Feel free to skip Circle of the Moon and just focus on Harmony of Dissonance & Aria of Sorrow. CoTM is like a B-side album of the other GBA Igavanias

I agree with the podcast... STAGE SIX on the NES CV1 - HARD AS HECK!

Mike Brothers

Immediately looked for Shane's name at the bottom of the post and was not disappointed. Looking forward to this one!

Kevin Delane

Is it worth getting the arcade archives castlevania?

John Learned

Absolutely agree with Jeremy's take on IV. When I finally made my way through it a few years ago, I just didn't like it that much. Good, but, you know

Why does Shane constantly interrupt while someone is trying to make a point?

Nemo

Jeremy, where did you get the impression that Super Castlevania IV is more humorous and light-hearted than its predecessors?

Listening to this gave me the urge to replay Castlevania on my Switch. I never played the game until the collecting came out last year--crazy, huh? Yet I found it to be a fantastic game in 2019. The true classics never age.

That was a super fun podcast! Really great stuff. :)

retronauts

It has exaggerated ooky-spooky SFX (hinges creaking) and goofy monsters/scenery (those hilarious Scooby Doo spooks in the background of the treasury). It's clearly having fun with its theme.

PurpleComet

It was humbling to hear you guys say Super Castlevania IV is "easy" because I've been save scumming my way through it. It's not as bad as the original NES Castlevania, but the later levels have a few spots that are nearly impossible to get through unless you know what's coming.
