We keep hearing rumors that Nintendo's going to remaster its 3D Mario games for Switch—an enticing prospect, although the tendency of these rumors to group them all into a single collection makes them a little suspect. These are big, meaty games that would require a fair amount of tinkering, which means a piecemeal approach seems more likely. Case in point: The Super Mario Galaxy duology, which put Mario back on the right track after the ambitious but messy Super Mario Sunshine. Either one of these games could probably stand alone as a "new" release—a combined package might actually end up feeling like too much game. Not that we'd complain. As we make clear in this episode, these are excellent games, and we're all in favor of the world having access to them... especially the relatively overlooked Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Description: Come sail away with Jeremy Parish, Bob Mackey, and Henry Gilbert as we turn back the hands of time more than a decade, somehow, to revisit Mario's most cosmic journey of all time: Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 for Nintendo Wii.

SMG is easily, EASILY, my favorite 3D Mario game. Mario 64 blew my mind when I was 13 and I've greatly enjoyed the others (less so with Sunshine) but I remember sitting down with Galaxy and collecting every star, in order, over the period of a few days until I was finished. Then I switched over to Luigi and did it with him. The only parts I didn't like were the bombing-the-trash minigame (until I learned that the coins on the ground mark where to throw the bombs) and, of course, Luigi's Purple Coins. Especially as Luigi. It's very possible that Galaxy 2 just came out at a bad time for me, mostly because I had much less free time than I did when the first one released, because I don't look back on it as fondly. I didn't think it was bad at all, but by the time I got to the last set of galaxies, I didn't have the time or patience to complete them and I've never revisited the game. I really hope Nintendo confirms the ports/remasters of these 3D games before long, because I really don't want to hook up my Wii U again. And especially not the Wiimote sensor.

SMG & SMG2 are by far my favorite Mario games, and in my top 5 favorite games of all time. I was bummed SMG2 wasn't included in 3D All-Stars, but holding out hope they'll still port it (would have just preferred the two Galaxy games vs. 64 and Sunshine tbh). My wife likes to "just watch Mario" and not play, so having the second player be minimally involved was the perfect dynamic for the two of us (probably a big part of why I have such fond memories of these 😂). Fast forward 13 years and now our son has filled her shoes. I love these games for the way they can really tailor to your style of play and appeal to such a wide audience: challenging, but not frustrating, for the most part...I still haven't forgiven the daredevil comet in the melty-molten galaxy, though.
