The topics covered in this week's two segments may not seem too closely related, but in point of fact there is a common thread linking them: Specifically, long-time friend of the show and regular guest Shivam Bhatt has made both topics into a life-long passion. In our first hour, he schools me in the ways of Sid Meier's Civilization; in the second, he teams up with Patron Bill Nielsen to reveal the mysteries of Magic: The Gathering (which is not technically a video game, but the outsize influence it's had on gaming can't be overstated). This is one of those rare episodes where I, as host, basically just shut up and let someone else talk for a couple of hours—so big thanks to Shivam and Bill for making it happen.

Description: Friend of the show Shivam Bhatt features this week as we talk about two gaming topics dear to his heart: Sid Meier's Civilization and (by patron request of segment guest Bill Nielsen) Magic: The Gathering.

Great episode! Both topics were dear to me as a child, but my engagement with them fell off as the years went on. I came into Magic during 5th Edition & would mail envelopes at the local comic shop for free booster packs. My friends & I returned to Magic: the Gathering in college when Ravinca dropped, but interest fell off due to how cost prohibitive the game can be to broke students. Shivam Bhatt was a great guest - informative, confidence & passionate. I’d love to hear him on future Retronauts episodes.

Hmm is the song that starts at 1:33:26 from a final fantasy? Great episode by the way.

Great episode. I remember digging into CIV II Test of Time with my little brother. It was one of a few games he and I really connected on in our younger years. We would talk strategy and how well our conquests via dragon were moving along. I still miss that game sometimes. What a wonderful time suck.

I was fascinated with games like Civilization as a kid but I find them far too unpleasant to play now. The fantasy is colonialism, a true evil in the world. I can only take it in a fantasy scenario - Master of Orion I could see going back to - but the setting of the real world is depressing.

The whole concept of 4X is self-defeating, too - after you've explored, expanded, extracted and (ugh) exterminated, you leave yourself with a less interesting world. It's a genocidal impulse where you end with far less than you started with.

I believe it is. If I recall, it’s the card game theme from FFVIII!

Ahh, I remember the days of the original Civilization. Like Shivam, I had no instructions so I didn't know how to make a settler unit to found a second city. I ended up conquering the whole world with one city producing warrior units the whole time. As time went on and I learned by doing, the gameplay became much more varied.

I enjoyed the episode, some great Civ trivia, but I must say that with Shivan I zone out pretty easily unless I’m really interested in the topic, which is a shame as he seems like a really nice guy.

Shivam's voice sounded familiar to me, buy I couldn't remember from where. Then he referenced Dragonlance, so I'm pretty certain he used be on the DL Canticle podcast and used to be quite prominent (moderator?) in the DL forums.

Very cool 2-in-1 episode! Having Shivan on in both parts provided some fun continuity. But now I'm sad I threw all my Magic cards away in a move. Would be fun to pull out every now and then.
