Hey folks,

As of today, we're changing the Retronauts Patreon to a "charge up front" payment system. What this means is our Patreon now acts like every other business transaction you make on the internet: you pay for something, and then you get it. With our past system, a new patron could conceivably dip into the Patreon for almost an entire month, sample all of the exclusive content, and then duck out before it's time to pay the bill. (Not that any of our listeners would do anything so scandalous.)

The good news for current patrons is that nothing will change—new patrons will simply have to pay their first month's cost up front, and then they will be charged on the first of every month as usual. Patreon has an extensive breakdown of how it works, but it's extremely straightforward. And if you want to up your pledge, you'll simply be charged the difference between the two tiers when you make the change. Those who want to jump from $3 to $5, for example, will now pay the $2 difference immediately. (With some warning, of course)

This is a very small change that's ultimately very good for us now that we offer some exclusive content. Since this content is in the same format as what we offer listeners for free—full-length Retronauts episodes—at this point, we have around 400 free samples for anyone who's interested in what's behind the paywall. And if anyone needs more convincing, very soon we'll be offering short samples of our exclusive $5 podcasts on the free feed. Thanks for listening, and please let us know if you have any questions!

The babel fish puzzle is way worse from what I remember...

Makes sense and seems much more secure for Retronauts from a "business perspective".

In theory. It's something that I see some other creators talking about. Payment up front just makes sure this doesn't happen. And once you have a continuing payment set up, it doesn't really make a difference as long as you don't constantly change your patreon levels.

I never understood why the other option is even available.
