Greetings! Can you believe we haven't had a Super Smash Bros. episode in all these years? Or... that maybe we've done one and I've completely forgotten it? I don't know how these things work.

This was going to be a "classic roots" episode focused on the inspirations behind a current release, but we got kind of carried away with the "setting the context" section of the episode and never actually got to Smash Bros. Ultimate. Whoops! Despite the extreme distraction on display here, the episode turned out really well. Which is especially remarkable considering my own disinterest in the Smash Bros. series! Good thing the other guys carried my dead weight over the finish line for me.

Pretty good stuff! You haven't mentioned the competitive scene almost at all, though, nor how it developed from a party game to what it is today. Not sure if that's interesting for you guys at all, though, but as a mid-level competitive smash player, I could help out if you want.

The casual mention of wrestling games being difficult to design as vehicles for storytelling in the same way that an actual match is is something that I think about a lot. Even if a game were to exist where the concept was to play it not as a fight, but as a worked story, there's still going to be inherent limitations as to what stories could be told. A thumbtack spot, for example would lose its gravitas if there's not that idea of an actual human being getting punctured by actual, physical tacks. Comedy spots wouldn't be as funny with pre-canned animations, either.

Hey, just so you all know, Ness (as well as Luigi btw) first appeared in Smash 64, not Melee. I only bring it up because it was such a weird inclusion at the time, even weirder than if HAL had only added Ness in Melee; even as a lifelong Nintendo fan, I had never heard of Ness until Smash 64 came out. Anyway, loving the episode! Thanks for producing it!! <3

We blame Chris for all flawed information here. He was supposed to be the chosen one!

I agree, I dropped off after melee and I caught a few mistakes in the information presented in this podcast. Still enjoyed the episode!

When I think about the N64 version of this game, I think about how annoying expert Pikachu and Ness players were (I'm talking about you Ben) that I spent full weekends learning how to cheese Pikachu and Ness with my Captain Falcon! EDIT: The Joy-Cons are better than the GameCube controller?! Immediate unsubscribe 😅

Ness was in the original smash, not introduced in Melee
