This time on Retronauts, we're talking about something that's rarely a featured topic on the show: ourselves! On this special Friday installment, Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross of the Duckfeed.tv network join us in our Midwest Gaming Classic hotel room to discuss the wild and woolly world of being a self-employed podcaster. Is it exciting and exotic, with danger around every corner? Or fairly straightforward, with a lot of staring at a computer screen while concocting elaborate excuses to leave the house? We think you'll find the answer is somewhere in the middle.

This week in Retronauts, “Now this is podcasting!”

Abrahm Simons

How could anyone skip the Retronauts theme song? It's so good!

As someone who also does a cartoon podcast, bob I feel the pain of no one believing you.

While my job is podcast friendly and I do enjoy retro gaming, it's those snappy Bob Mackey quips that have carried me through 98% of the current and 1UP back catalog. Great episode - it's awesome to hear what drives you guys to do what you do.

What is with people asking, "What do you do?" I've literally never asked anyone that, yet I get asked it all the time. And no, I never skip the theme song. It's so short!

Julian

This episode made me appreciate you guys even more. Thank you!

Julian

Also, Bob, we do listen to the theme song and expect quips. ;)

As someone who started up a patreon/weird niche video series I relate to a good deal of this discussion. I have thrown around the idea of adding a podcast to my “let’s do this for fun/learn new skills” load but as you talked about, it would require a degree of consistency and topics I probably wouldn’t have time for! Just want to note I also appreciate the work you’ve been doing for years.

With regards to finding satisfaction in your podcasting work, I try to treat it like a round of golf. I'm playing against the course rather than other people, so to speak. So if the production is good and the interview went well, I try to find joy there since I can't really control how many people will listen.

As someone with minimal creative ability, I really enjoyed this conversation about podcasting, one of my favorite forms of entertainment.

I'll be the odd man out and admit that while I definitely listen to the opening quip in each episode, I then immediately push the forward button to skip the theme song.

Bob casually slamming the Rock Band mic as a piece of podcasting equipment really got a good laugh out of me because once upon a time, I recorded a Let's Play using one that I never released. Good times.
