Hey, this game really SUCKS! But only because it's supposed to. This week on Retronauts, we jump back to the ancient year of 2001 to dig deep into Luigi's Mansion: the GameCube launch title that underwhelmed at the time, but really holds up today. And, thanks to a new 3DS port, it's more playable than ever before! On this episode, join Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert as they shine their flashlights all over Luigi's first adventures in the paranormal.

I love Bob's ernest enthusiasm for Liugis Mansion. He's been talking about it so long I'm glad he finally got the chance to make an episode about it.

Dark Moon's ending is one of my all time favorites of any Nintendo game. I wonder how Next Level got all that charming story content past Miyamoto...

I played the Luigi's Mansion arcade game a couple of months ago in Tokyo! It's basically an on rails shooter in a spooky sit down cabinet. Two players each have a vacuum controller that you aim at the screen with a reticule. You charge up the Strobulb from Dark Moon to reveal hidden objects and stun ghosts, then suck them up by holding the trigger and dragging the reticule away from them. Vacuuming ghosts and coins is accompanied by a satisfying mechanical 'thunk', similar to the kickback in the House of the Dead 3 shotgun. The game also cribs from Time Crisis in the way that ghosts deal damage if you fail to clear them in time; if you get overwhelmed, you can use a flash grenade to stun all of the ghosts simultaneously, giving you time to recover. It's extremely hectic and the boss fights are arbitrarily difficult, but the game looks absolutely gorgeous in HD, and the first person format allows you to luxuriate in the background details. It's a surprisingly effective conversion, and a charming way to spend a few hundred yen.

I finally played Luigi's Mansion a few years ago. It's such a great introduction to the Gamecube and what Nintendo would do with the system. I'd argue this is peak Nintendo with all the first party titles doing interesting things with varying, but I'd argue mostly positive, degrees of success. Luigi's Mansion is definitely on the more positive side of things and is, personally, a stand out title for the system.

I think Bob is right on the mark with the comparison to Aardman’s animation style in regards to Luigi’s appearance. In fact if you look at the promo art for Dark Moon the characters have an unmistakable plasticine texture on them. Really interesting stuff. https://www.mariowiki.com/Gallery:Luigi%27s_Mansion:_Dark_Moon#/media/File%3ALuigi-II.jpg

I said dollar bills but I still fired myself from Retronauts.
