Ah, Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon: The twin jewels of '90s anime. Though many series have surpassed these two in longevity and popularity, these anime titans hold sole responsibility for getting so many Americans into anime during the late 90s, when Japanese animation wasn't so commonplace in our country. And, of course, when you have two properties so huge and influential, you're gonna see a whole bunch of video game adapatations. On this episode of Retronauts, GameSpot's Sam Leichtamer and Kallie Plagge join Bob and Jeremy to explore these anime mega-hits and the many games they spawned. Listen now, or in the name of the moon, we'll send you to another dimension!

Haven't delved too far into the ep but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who messes up with the whole Gamestop/Gamespot thing

This may not be the space to post links, but I sincerely laugh out loud each time I watch this fan dramatization of Sailor Moon. Funny and worth the watch if you haven't seen it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzLOZNxdQCw

I'm only halfway through the podcast, but holy cow what an undertaking.

When I was a teenager, I had a friend who was prone to “my Uncle works at Nintendo” flights of fancy, and he said that at a local arcade they had a “Dragon Ball Z vs. Sailor Moon” fighting game

I wasn't expecting this episode, but as a fan of both series, I enjoyed this quite a bit. As problematic as the DiC's dub of Sailor Moon, the American songs were good. "Carry On" was the better ones, and it was played during the final battle against Beryl. For a sappier kind of song, "My Only Love" is pure sap but really good. I'm a little surprised the soundtrack was not mentioned in the episode. Also, I'm surprised that it wasn't mentioned that the character of Tuxedo Mask was suit a bit older than Usagi/Serena to the point where it seemed somewhat inappropriate.

Super insightful episode, it was really interesting. Coincidentally, over the last few weeks, I've been playing the Dimps-made gba game Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure, which you mentioned, and I really recommend it. It's essentially Dragon Ball by the way of Metal Slug, complete with a one on one fighting mode that's surprisingly playable with the GBA's limited inputs. I'd also like to add that Sam and Kallie were as knowledgeable as they were entertaining. I look forward to hearing them back on the show, someday. :)

Addendum to my previous comment, I don't recall you mentioning it but the somewhat recent DBZ Extreme Budokai on 3DS is a really good fighter, with excellent pixel art and a ton of characters. Definitely worth a shot if you enjoy smooth pixel art animation. :)

I watched both when they first was shown in America also. I jumped off DB since everything felt really wrong which was just localization choices of the days. Sailor Moon however I was strangely into. My two younger sisters watched it and being a one TV household I was forced to watch it. But after a few episodes I quickly understood it was just a female version of Power Rangers. Power Rangers but better with actual characters with flaws and plot lines. Felt kind of weird enjoying it because of how "girly" it was but happy I was able to enjoy it since it let me actually watch the whole thing sub years later.

I was once the victim of syndicated Dragon Ball Z. It was my first experience with anime, and it came on every Sunday at 730AM. This was pre-Toonami. No one else knows the pain of waiting a full week, only to see that Vegeta was still charging up an attack. My god it was addicting, but so so slow to watch. Ruining my sleep habits too.

Also, Sam and Kallie were amazing guests. have them on again please!

I used to watch Dragonball/Z and Sailor Moon growing up, along with One Piece afterwards.

This was an amazing episode about Dragonball and Sailor Moon games. Bob should do an episode all about One Piece video games in the future. There are some One Piece games that other OP gamers probably never heard of before, especially the GBC games.
