I know we usually do these on Mondays, but tomorrow is going to be insanely busy and I don't want this to fall by the wayside amidst everything else going on. I figure no one will complain about getting an episode 8 days early rather than 7.... This latest Retronauts episode — full Retronauts episode! — tests the limits of the word "retro," since the subject at hand (Nintendo DS) is only 10 years old. But eh. USgamer's Kat Bailey and Games Radar's Henry Gilbert join us to talk about the system. There's a lot of discussion of how everyone expected the worst of the DS, and the point at which we all changed our minds. What a plucky little underdog of a handheld. Thanks as always for your support. Hopefully I'll have time to upload some bonus wallpapers this week! Sorry I've been running behind on those. — Jeremy

Great episode, team. I have never played a DS or 3DS before, but Retronauts discussions of companies and consoles I've never played are always educational and informative.

I had a similar experience with Mario 64 DS. I remember being at my friends house showing him the DS, and he wanted to know why 2 screens were special. His mom saw the device and was curious too. I happened to show them the Mini Games, and his mom was amazed! She ended up asking to try it, which was super weird became she kind of disliked that we played games. He ended up getting a DS soon after, and told him his mom played it about once a week and was thinking of getting one herself. I didn't realize it at the time, but looking back, that exact experience was probably happening all over the US which would fuel the 'casual' market for DS and Wii.

Mike Mika was on IGN's Nintendo Voice Chat last year and talked all about the Dark Void Zero project - including his friendship with Jimmy Fallon and how that weird marketing idea came about.

When I started a job in 2006 that was about 50% traveling, I finally broke down and bought a DS (fat) specifically for Castlevania. Like Henry, I went from a launch GBA to a DS, and looking at that bright screen for the first time I could swear I heard angels singing

Looking forward to this episode. I didn't "discover" the DS – I was on a gaming hiatus at the time – until I bought a 3DS in 2013 and started really putting that backwards compatibility to work. As everyone knows there's lots of great 3DS games, but I'm pretty sure I've dumped way more time into Professor Layton, Contact, Aliens: Infestation, GTA Chinatown Wars, and other DS games since I got the system. DS games are currently in that videogame pricing sweet spot – not new enough to be expensive, but not old enough to be retro, so generally dirt cheap. As a sidenote, I just wanted to let ya'll know that there was recently a stick in the mud commenting on one of the micro episodes about pulling his funding because the money was being used for travel. I found that guy's comments so ridiculous it motivated me to make a pledge. Keep up the good work!
