Hi all, I'm recovering from both a weekend of podcast recording AND a flu that hit me at the same time we went into the studio. Please pardon my terseness and enjoy this critical examination of Super Mario Sunshine, just in time for its sequel (more or less), Super Mario Odyssey. — Jeremy

I enjoyed Sunshine back in the day... Even though it was very obvious from the start that it was no Mario 64. Fludd is tricky to control and the story sequences felt out of place. But the setting and atmosphere is very pleasant, and silly as it sounds, I've always enjoyed tropical themes in games. :) I do like it when sunny beaches and palm trees appear in Sonic as well. The water effects looked astounding for it's day and the music was great. I think part of Sunshine's dilemma is that it is also compared to the other Mario adventures, only some of the greatest games ever made. Merely "pretty good" doesn't cut it in that company.

As the youngin' I was when Sunshine came out, I always found it much more frustrating that what I had played of Mario 64, but it was one of those things were I kind of assumed I was just bad at it and the game wasn't mechanically flawed in some ways, since everyone else loved it. But around the time of Mario Galaxy 2 I went back to play Sunshine a bit and it really changed my evaluation of it. Obviously it is nowhere near a terrible game, but for my money, it's the worst of the 3D main-entry Mario titles.

Man, you guys are really hitting on control issues that were really never part of my experience with the game. 64 always lost me by just feeling a little directionless and intimidating, but I have so much fun playing Sunshine still! Kid Icarus: Uprising is like my favorite action game too, so maybe my hands are just weird.

Everyone keeps apologizing for being so critical, but I say you weren’t critical enough. Super Mario Sunshine is by far the worst of all the Super Mario games 2D or 3D.

I completely agree (on all points). I still can't get over the frustration of finding a Yoshi egg, getting the specific fruit, and then having to figure out that his barf turns certain fish into platforms.
