Kevin: Hi folks, Kevin Bunch here! This week I’m excited to talk about a topic near and dear to me: fighting game history. Specifically we’re talking about the “doldrums” of the fighting game genre and the fighting game community in the 00s, when Capcom largely dropped out of the scene, SNK hit some serious speedbumps, and the great arcade die-off really made its mark. But this wasn’t to say that there weren’t any new fighting games, as we delve into over the course of this podcast. Joining me for this endeavor are Diamond Feit, artist Tedbob84 and FGC veteran Jason “RugalB” Harding, and I’m very proud of the range of expertise everyone brought to the table. So sit back and learn just why it was so difficult to play and compete in these games for the better part of a decade, as technology struggled to catch up with a rapidly changing offline experience.

Great episode! I'm loving all the fighting game content coming our way. A few thoughts: - I think another contributing factor to the decline of arcades wasn't just that home versions caught up to them, in some cases they were BETTER. Tekken 3 was widely praised for it's variety of gameplay modes, Street Fighter Alpha 3 added the World Tour mode and several classic characters (making it the first time the entire SFII cast reunited since Super Turbo), and Darkstalkers 3 had all the characters that couldn't fit into the arcade versions. - I would love to see Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max get an 'online edition' ala 3rd Strike. - Capcom says Ultimate MvC3 was originally going to be DLC but the 2011 earthquake in Japan affected the development and they had to release it as a standalone title. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but I don't work in game development

As a lover of B-tier fighting games who spent their entire life in either the DC area or Michigan, I can't think of an episode of any podcast that's had me feel as pandered-to as this. I was born in the early 90s, and was a bit too young to really get to experience the local fighting game scene during this era, so getting to hear all these first-hand reports of what was going on around me really is uniquely fascinating. Also, wanted to shout out how happy I was to hear Matrimelee discussed! I had meant to leave a comment on the Video Game Lyrics episode giving Power Instinct a mention as a series that was not only early to the trend of including vocals in game music, but whose vocal music completely eclipsed the series itself. One of the background songs from Matrimelee, Let's Go Onmyouji, became an icon of late-00's online culture in Japan, thanks to its bizarre official music video being the oldest remaining upload on Japanese video sharing site NicoNicoDouga. To this day, it remains a semi-regular fixture of VTuber karaoke streams (including some official collaborations with the recently-resurrected developer, Noise Factory), and characters who only existed in one stage background are more popular than any playable characters, or even the series itself, ever were.

As someone who was always fascinated by the fighting game scene, but too unskilled and intimidated to participate, I appreciated all the great stories and insights here. Thanks!
