Final Fantasy VI is 30 years old, and while we discussed this fact during a live show at 2024's Midwest Gaming Classic—stay tuned—we saved the more in-depth conversation for AFTER the panel. In a fairly average-size room, we each consumed approximately one beer and decided to put our knowledge of this legendary RPG and also mental math to the test. This week on Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Nadia Oxford, Diamond Feit and special floor guest Nina Matsumoto as the crew gathers to pit the cast of Final Fantasy VI against each other in an intense battle for supremacy. In a way, they're all winners... except Strago.

[Note from Bob: Our MGC podcasting plans changed due to unforeseen circumstances, so I had to learn to use someone else's recording equipment on the fly. The sound may seem a little different to you at first, but I manage to nail all the levels after the first five-or-so minutes.]

In my senior year of high school I wrote an essay about Locke because I was, and am very cool. My teacher, surprised that a videogame could have somewhat complex characters, had me read my essay infront of the class. The non Nintendo nerds of the class were equally surprised. This transitioned into 15 minutes of me and my friend, Andy, going over the themes of love and loss in this wonderful game. Locke is my 11. Andy's favorite was Sabin.

As a black FF fan, I am floored to learn General Leo is black because I never perceived him that way. His skin looked more olive to my eyes. I just asked my brothers and they didn't think he was black either Instead of being happy for some black representation, I find myself annoyed that in a FF with fourteen party members, not only is the one black character not one of them, he also dies. And to be clear, I like General Leo, he's probably the most interesting character that's not a party member. Great episode! Makes me want to pick up FFVI again.

it's not clear at all in the original sprite, and you can find plenty of fan art that depicts him as white. But looking at the portrait & Amano's original art, you can see the difference.
