Steel hates mercury . Mercury will dissolve steel . It doesn’t burn it it just makes it brittle and it breaks. It’s not expensive . Get a gallon and pour it on steel check it every 8 hours and see what happens

It will also dissolve gold, the way gold and silver ore was processed since the 1500's With no controls (since they then 'burned' the mercury off (like turning water into steam) the entire local area and people become soaked with mercury, as well as the watershed. Potosi in Peru mountains was polluted this way for centuries since the local mountain was almost 40% silver/lead metal.
