The general consensus is that a combination of her waning popularity and the sheer amount of R34 is what killed Erin Esurance.

Setting the R34 aside, I beg to differ.

In 2009 E-Poll (a market research company) did a popularity survey of marketing mascots where Erin was deemed less popular than Microsoft's "Clippy".  Of the thousands of corporate-branded mascots to choose from during that time period, only five were presented in the poll.  Not very scientific.  Naturally, in early 2010, all of the usual news outlets ran with it...and by the middle of the same year, thanks to one little poll, Esurance dumped her.

In other news...

It's also nice to see that, more than a decade after getting the axe, the internet is still getting it wrong.  A 2023 thread on TVTropes cites "the most well-known RuleThirtyFour of Erin, which often gets brought up whenever the campaign does" is (rightly so) sublisted as a Memetic Mutation.  Well, overlooking the fact that they misquoted it, the R34 in question would be mine.  It, however, was made in 2014...four years after Erin was dropped...and (obviously) did not contribute to her removal as the thread would otherwise lead one to believe.

Do your research people.
