Up until this one the oldest cartoon character I've done was Blondie.  Technically speaking, Bettie is older by a whole, whopping month, debuting in Max Fleischer's Dizzy Dishes on August 8, 1930.  Chic Young's Blondie comic strip (originally called 'Blonide and Dagwood') on the other hand, began publication in various newspapers on September 8, 1930.

You and your research. A+ I wish Betty looked that good in the cartoons. But for the 1930s she looked hot.

Well, to be quite honest she did look that good around 1933 when Fliescher perfected her design. Aaaannnnd then 1934 happened. Along came the National Legion of Decency and the motion picture (which included cartoons) Production Code...which killed Bettie's carefree flapper lifestyle and all of her (innocent) sexual innuendos and turned her into a spinster housewife and/or career girl. Even her trademark hip shaking and winks were deemed as "suggestive of immorality". By 1939 what we know as Bettie Boop was all but dead.

So I wonder if that is why they tried portraying with dog ears, that are now her earrings, in order to get around it. Yeah I really miss those morality police who were usually closet perverts anyway. It just goes to show ya we can't never have anything nice because there's always gonna be somebody who thinks it's wrong that we're enjoying ourselves. And again, your research A+

In her initial design I think she was purposely made 'dog-like' because her boyfriend was in fact a dog. There's a whole sad commentary on the real-life people/person that Betty was based upon too...lotsa greed, celebrity likeness law suits, plagiarism, and out-and-out racism.

It's amazing how much drama can be involved with producing fictional characters and sexy cartoons. But her popularity has definitely attributed to her longetivity.
