True story...no, sorry, it's not that kind of story:

You know how they say to be sure to remove any coins from your clothes pockets prior to putting them in the washing machine?  Well, it's not so you don't have to listen to them clanking around in the drier.

Five years ago I bought one of those new fangled high efficiency washing machines that doesn't have an agitator (the tall thing inside that sloshes the clothes around).  It was a decent washer that came with a 10 year parts warranty, but the (most expensive) part that wasn't covered under the warranty failed after only five years.  Go figure.

Being the handy, DIY guy that I am...and having repaired previous washing machines myself...I set about looking at fix-it videos for that specific machine.  The only ones I found however, were videos about the machine's fatal flaw...the U.S. dime.  Underneath the 'wash plate' (the thing at the bottom the tub that agitates the clothes in modern washers) are a series of drain holes, four larger ones that get rid of the dirty water and three smaller ones that supply water to cool the machine's transmission.  Those cooling holes are just small enough for a dime to fit in.  Sure enough, upon removing the wash plate and taking a look....yes, thirty cents killed my $600 washing machine.

Having been without a washer for a week (this was last week, by the way) with four adults and a small child in the house, I quickly abandoned the idea of fixing it.  I am far from being germophobic, but oh what fun...the very idea of being in a big-box store / Petri dish to go appliance shopping during a world-wide plague.
