I've been collecting comic books since I was 14 years old, but I don't ever recall gloming onto any particular (mainstream) female character.  Well, with the exception of Wonder Woman...'cuz I don't know of any red-blooded American kid that didn't have a thing for Lynda Carter back in the '70s.  It probably wasn't until the mid to late '90s when Image / Wildstorm characters like Red Monika (Battle Chasers), Aspen Matthews (Fathom), and Sara Pezzini (Witchblade) came along that started the lust-ball rolling.  Then again, I was that weird kid that collected stuff like The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Fritz the Cat, Zippy (the Pinhead) and owned every single issue of Heavy Metal magazine.

I'm with ya on the WW, Fritz and HM but I hadn't heard of the other 2 or BC and Fathom but I do know who those characters are. Thanks for the refresher course.

Some of the big names like Todd McFarlane (Spawn), Rob Liefeld (Deadpool), and several others got tired of the working for the mainstream companies and formed Image Comics in '92. Most (non-comic book) people have never heard of their titles, but they do know the spin-offs from them: TV series like The Walking Dead and movies like Kingsman, Kick-Ass, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. A lot of the underground comics from the '70s (like the ones mentioned) were from Rip-Off Press and Kitchen Sink Press...and the likes of R. Crumb, most notable for his one-page comic Keep on Truckin'. Most of them were about late '60s and early '70s counterculture (hippies), drugs, and (anti)politics.
